Virtual Trip Across US

I'm doing a virtual tour across the US. I created a map that starts in Atlantic City, NJ. I plan to take US route 40 west. If you want to do this too, just create a map with a starting point in Atlantic City and trace your mileage on #40. I started my trip on September 1st, so if you do this, please log your miles you have on and after that date. You can view my map at:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/nj/atlantic-city/349035146

Note: I cross train - walk, run, cycle. For this a mile is a mile, no matter how you cover it.

I'll be interested in the response to this. It's not necessarily a race, but I can see that it could be a little competitive. Be honest.

Yesterday I was taking my run as usual. I typically run early in the morning, when it is still dark out. I enjoy those runs, with the exception of one thing: cars that drive by with their brights on, completely blinding you! Every time I run this happens and it just pisses me off sometimes.

I felt like sharing my thoughts. If anyone else agrees, has any advice, or would like to talk about their own pet peeve, please post it here.

I don't mind that there is now a subscription fee for the more advanced and NEW features. What really irks me that my training logs are now on your servers and I have no way of downloading them for my personal record unless I pay. We helped make this site what it is today, and this is the thanks we get?

One of our 3rd party service providers was down on Sunday, July 20 for approximately 7 hours. This affecting viewing and saving routes from about 930 PST to 430PST.

We still kept the rest of the website up and put up the following message on our create pages:

"Due to an issue with one of our service providers, the 'save route' feature is currently disabled. This is temporary and route saving will resume shortly. In the meantime, you may use the route tool but be aware that the save functionality has been disabled. Please check back shortly, as this message will no longer display when services are back to normal. We apologize for the inconvenience and and working to get this feature back up as soon as possible"

Because of this downtime we are actively pursuing a better solution that would minimize our reliance on 3rd parties. We apologize for any inconvenience this downtime caused.

I noticed that if I log out and start a new map I now get the option of using either the "old mapping tool" or the "new mapping tool". The old mapping tool seems to work fine. I have to log in to save the route. But after the save I can't continue mapping that route. It does NOT remember my login form the save operation so when I "map new ride" again I get the mapping tool selection option.

Would it be possible to set this up so that the old edit tool comes up when I hit edit, rather than the "we are currently working on our Edit Route functionality" message?

I am attempting to map bike routes in and around Lakeville, Indiana. Some of the street names are incorrect on the mapmyride map, although they are correct on Google maps. The street names have not changed in decades, so if you are using Google maps as your source, the names should be correct on your map.

In one case, an east-west street in town is labelled with the name of a north-south road that is at least 3 miles from town.

Caffeine in energy gels

Most of the energy gel packets that I've seen out there contain caffeine. I know a lot of runners like the caffeine element, but I am one who has an unfavorable reaction to it. (I'll spare you the details) The problem for me is that it is sometimes very hard to tell if a gel has caffeine as it is usually not prominently stated on most of the packaging. and, those that may advertise as caffeine-free usually only come in the lamest flavors. (Key Lime...yuk!)

A few questions for the community:

Does anyone else prefer the non-caffeine energy gels and can they recommend a few brands with some decent flavors?

Also, as much as I study the packaging of these products and will only use products that have no mention of caffeine, I've run into my caffein reaction with some of them still. Are there other ways to tell if something has caffeine in it from the list of ingredients? Does caffein have a more scientific name (dexa-, trycla-, xano-, etc.)?

Hi All:

I've been enjoying reading the entries in this forum. Nice group.

I'm running my first half-marathon in a few weeks, and it occurred to me that I could use it as a way of getting charitable contributions for a 501(c)(3) organization I'm involved with.

Can anyone point me in a direction to learn about how to do this type of thing well? As far as the actual money, I can point them to the org's website and have them put "Jay's run" in the comments or some such. So at least I don't have to worry about collecting money.

Any help is welcomed and appreciated.

Cheers,

Tough training and job, and a lot to say for an ambition, but im sure with some 'hardcore' training I could do it. But thats not for another 1 1/2 years or so, so going to get fitness up even more.

Just purchased my bike last Saturday. I cannot do gyms, and swimming is a lot of fun and a big activity for me, however I cannot stand smelling like a chloring tablet and being so dried out all the time. So I picked up a new bike and started riding. Nothing too serious yet, I have the essentials. Found this site as I was trying to keep track of my routes and plans. Nothing to crazy so far, about 25 miles on 3 rides so far (including the one I am going on after work tonight). I am starting off a little slow to not kill myself and growing steadily.

Oh, the bike. Nothing crazy but I love it so far. A Gary Fisher Tarpon 2008. Nice bike and should work well for me being a beginner. Anyways, I'm in the Southwestern, CT area just finding routes as I go along and mapping them later. Talk to you all soon!

Here's a couple jokes I found...not all entirely about running..but still worth a read...

The Joy of Jogging:

1. For every mile you jog, you add one minute to your life. This
enables you, at the age of 85, to spend an additional five months in a
nursing home at $5,000/month.
2. The only reason I took up jogging was to hear heavy breathing again.
3. I joined a health club last year, spending $400 in the process. I haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up.
4. I have to exercise early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing.
5. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
6. The advantage to exercising every day is that you die healthier.
7. I have flabby thighs but fortunately my stomach covers them.
8. If you are going to take up cross-country skiing, it helps to start with a small country.
9. I don't jog; it makes me spill my milk shake.
10. Actually, I don't exercise at all. If we were meant to touch our toes, we would have them farther up on our body.

The trouble with music during a run

During my time as a runner (nearly 11 years now) I have found that you can group nearly every single runner into one of two categories. The first category is the runner that cannot go without their Mp3 player. The second; the runner that cannot go out with an Mp3 player.

I am firmly in the latter.

When I first started running competitively, my friend, as cool as he is, bought me a small Mp3 player that I could easily take with me on a run. I thanked him and thought it was great since I had never had the means to bring some music on a run.

After a week, I told him that I had to return it. When he asked why, I stated that it messed up my rhythm and pace too much. He looked at me like I was stupid.

But it was true. I initially put on my favorite music which was/is techno/trance/electronica. Well, the fast beat of the music drove my pace that much faster and I found myself cooking to the tune of 5 minute miles. When I would try to slow down, the fast beat of the music would still be drumming and quite honestly I would find myself slowing way down, stumbling over my own feet, etc.

On my next couple of runs that week I tried different styles of music: hard rock, classical, country, etc. No matter what song I played, I always found that it would always mess me up one way or another. Anything from wonky pace, to irregular breathing (probably from trying to sing along), to stumbling feet.

After the week or so, I finally gave up. I've since tried from time to time running with music, but I got the same results every time. Lately, however, I have eased back on the competitve running and am starting to find that I'm getting lonely out on the road. I think music could help aleviate that a bit.

Therefore, my question to all you music listeners:

How do you run with music (how does it help you)? and what music do you listen to?

Can anyone recommend a bathing suit that is very supportive for a woman with a large chest? The suit will be used in training for a sprint tri.

thanks for your thoughts.

I created two routes recently. they seemed to save fine the first time. Then I tried to edit them. They opened up for editing, I made my changes. Once I tried to save and continue with the same name, and once I tried to save as with a different name. In both cases, all turn and route information was lost, even though the default mileage was still in the name.

By the way, where is the help discussion category?

Does anyone know of a good paintshop in the Dallas area that paints bicycles? I am hoping not to have to spend too much. I am not looking for anything spectacular.
