Hey Folks:

With all the sporty people in here, I figure you're the best group to ask. I always have really hot feet, and as soon as it's 50° outside I can't stand wearing shoes unless I have to.

I have a pair of Birkenstocks that I've been wearing for years. This year when I started wearing them I became aware that they are smelly. Feet-smelly. I've been happy not to have that problem with them in the past (cuz my feet can smell), but no more.

Can anyone recommend a good sandal for someone with FLAT FEET (i.e., arch support important) that don't take on odors and don't break the bank? If I didn't have to use a bunch of velcro, I'd love that, and I can make sacrifices

Thanks much.

Jay

For over a year now, I've been wanting to compete in a 5K race. Well, this year, I finally set my mind to it. I needed to lose a little weight and lower my cholesterol anyway, and I knew the only chance I had of sticking with running was to actually pick a race and register.

I used a beginner's 5K training program from Runner's World, and tried my best to stick with it. Being in Minnesota, the treadmill was my friend, but it still wasn't easy.

In early March, I discovered this site - and it was a great morale booster for me! Being able to track my progress so easily, and see that, yes, there was progress. Being able to map out a route and know how far I'm going...and reading the forums to see the issues and advice from others. It was just what I needed.

I'm happy to say that I ran my 5K over the weekend with a goal of 27:00...and finished in 24:29! I felt great, and was comfortable and focused the entire time.

Thanks in part to this site and everyone here, I'm excited about continuing to run, and I'm already looking forward to registering for another race!

Hi. Sorry if this is off-topic slightly but I'm running a general survey on clubs and communities. If anyone is interested please feel free to fill it out (there's a prize too ;-).

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=wNMvp0_2fzBKVEoCibFzyIZA_3d_3d

I'm also doing my first triathlon and I have a diver's wetsuit. Has anyone done the swim portion in a diver's wetsuit? I swam 2km in the pool in the wetsuit and while it's cramped up in the shoulders, I could still do it.

Want to save myself $300 by reusing my diver's wetsuit.

Thanks!

Does anyone have these shoes? If so, what do you think? I've been running with Saucony Pro Triumph and have been thinking of buying these, but it would basically be a shot in the dark because I can't find a store near me that sells them. I'm a big guy (6'2", 220) with high arches who supinates. I've read that these are a good shoe for me and wanted to know what people thought or any other shoes they might recommend. Thanks me peeps.

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a little advice. I have been working out on my norditrack treadmill for almost 3 months now. I do the walk/jog routine. I will usually walk for 3 min. at 4.0 then jog for 3 min at 5.0 (I am new to running and this is what I can comfortable tolerate at this point) I do this routine for 30-45 min a day. My questions:

1)When I log my training on map my run. It doesn't give me the option of cardio-treadmill under the walking category, so I log it under gym, then cardio treadmill, is that okay?

2)After my workout, the treadmill, my heart rate monitor and map my run never corelate on my calories burned. For example: after 45 min on the treadmill, my distance was 3.27 miles. The treamill reads 270 calories burned, the heart rate monitor reads 189 calories burned and map my run says 421 calories burned. I am so confused. Which should I go by?

Thank you.

I want to extend a very belated thank you to the MapMyFitness team for a job well done on their mapping software. In September of last year I rode with a group approx. 400 miles from Connecticut to Scranton, Pennsylvania. We used MapMyRide to make all the cue sheets, including waypoints for SAG vehicle stops, and then uploaded the courses to my Garmin 305 GPS. At no point did we get lost, despite being on some very rural roadways, and in fact there were times when the GPS was more correct than the cue sheet indicated (e.g. a right hand turn from Main Street to Main Street). We even used the elevation profiles to warn riders of upcoming hills, getting folks psyched up ahead of time or suggesting to the triathletes in the group that they should shift out of their big chainrings. ;-)

What is it withthe mentality of dog owners that they think they own every patch of open space, and that it is there for the enjoyment of their hound (and for it to c**p on , when no-one else is around to see it?)

Without wishing to seem too intolerant, I have had at least 3 incidents over the past 6 months with dogs snapping at my ankles; the latest occuring today, when only a mile and a half into my run I encountered a 'pack' of 4 women with their hounds. As i passed them, I heard the sound of one of the dogs approaching, snarling and bearing it's teeth at me - not wishing to lose out on my running for a week or two through injury, I did my best to toe punt the beast into the next county. After the introduction of shoe leather - the animal departed, but I was then treated to a barrage of abuse from the doggy people , with comments like 'It's only being friendly' - I've seen on the news how 'friendly' dogs like to play with smal children. It's the dog people I hate, the dog has an excuse , being a dumb animal.

Is this strictly a UK issue, or do people elswhere on the planet have the 'Doggy can do no wrong' mentality - I'm for banning dogs from ALL public places - they're a bloody menace.

I train regularly (about 20 workouts/month) for sprint to olympic distance triathlons and recently had to take 3 weeks off of impact (running/cycling) activities for a calf muscle tear. During those 3 weeks, I only did a few swim workouts. I generally spent time on the couch, not exercising, not really watching my diet.

To my surprise, I weighed myself after the 3 weeks expecting to see weight gain. However, I lost 5 lbs. !?

Does anyone else experience this? It seems for me historically that weight loss occurs when I am least active and seem to eat the most?!

I'd love to hear any comments...

Hi, I'm relatively new to running (I started last January) and I typically run 3-4 miles every other day. When I first started running I was struggling with my endurance and pace. In high school, when I played soccer, I typically ran around an 8:30 min/mile and now 6 years later I'm running around a 10 min/mile. I figured after training for a while my pace would come down. I received a heart rate monitor for my birthday in may and have used it religiously during my runs and have found that I am having problems going over my target HR zone with my 10 min mile. So during my runs, when my HR goes too high (around 180 bpm) I start to slow down. I guess my questions is how do I continue to increase my speed without making my heart rate go out of control. Whenever I try to push myself during my runs, my HR jumps from around 174 (my average, which I think is still too high) to 190.

I'm open to all suggestions.

thanks,

Bridget

ps. I'm 24, 130 lbs, 5'1" with a BMI of 24.9.

Hi,

I've noticed that your calorie calculators use ranges to calculate calories. For instance, if I walk for 4 miles in an hour, it gives me a value of say 350 calories. If I do this in 1 hour and 1 minute, the calories burned falls to something around 270 (these are examples, but a true example of what happens). It seems that you prescribe one value for calories/hour at 4mph-4.49 mph, a totally different one at 4.5, etc. Can you fix this so it's more on a sliding scale. I know one minute does not make a ~100 calories burned difference in my workout. Just a suggestion, but one that would be helpful and not make me misreport the time I took doing something ;)

Cheers.

I guess it would be correct to say I am a newborn in the running world...I used to run all the time, miles a day, because I played sports. Then, after baby, my body seems to be rebelling due to the lack of softball, or much of any movement for that matter. It is like I have never run before. Many of my friends have gotten the marathon bug-and most use the run one minute, walk one minute method. They all swear by it. But I want to lose much weight...is this effective at all? All you seasoned runners...have you used this method? Is it good to start with while I get back into running, or is there a different and better way to start? I also have knee pain, which is a new thing. My shoes are still fairly new, should I first strength train in my legs some before I opt for new ones? Thanks!

I have been working on a better diet and exercise program for almost 3 weeks.I found my hardest thing to give up was pop I was a mountain dew fan and 3 large pops a day was the normal along with my fast food meal.

In order to get away from the pop I looked for alternatives and some guys at work introduced me to powderdrink packets. These are the packets you add to your 20 oz water bottle and shake for an intsant flavored drink.

So far I have tried the following packets and wonder what you guys think about using them to cut calories and still have flavor.

Target stocks Market Pantry brand comes in strawberry lemonade, strawberry orange, banana and a few others. Advertised as sugar free and states 0 calories, 0 fat, sodium, carbs sugars or protein.

Meijer Fitness drink mix. I have only tryed Kiwi-strawberry and black cherry both wonderful. 0 calories , 0 fat, 35mg sodium, 0 sugars, protein and carbs. 10 % vitamin C,Vit E,Vit B6 25 % , Vit B1210%, Panthotheic acid 5% (anybody know what that is?. Meijer has 3 catogories of drinks, sport, fitness and energy.

Crystal light on the go drink mix. I have only tryed the lemonade , orange with green tea,Rasberry with green tea, Regular Rasberry and I like them all. 0 fat, 75 mg sodium,30 potassium , carb 0 ,sugar 0 ,protein 0. Vit A 10%, Vit E 10%, Viamin C 100% Ribflavin 10%,Niacin 10%,Vit B6 10%, Calories 5. No caffenine.

Crystal light immunity antioxidants drink mix. Only tryed the Cherry Pomegranate and it was a bit strong in 20 oz. I found mixing this one with 25-30 ounce was better for taste for me this one has an acquired taste. Fat 0,Sodium 10 total carb 1g,sugar 0 ,protein 0, Vit A(as beta Carotene) 20 %, Vit C 20 %, Vit E 20%. 5 Calories. No caffeine low sodium.

Power aid brand, Grape and cherry and I don't have the specs on them as I just ran out.

My question is are they as good for you as advertised? I have been drinking a mixture of these different packs about 2 or 3 of them a day. My wife thinks they are better then pop but has anybody hear any side effects or other studies on these drink mixes?

I recently started having problems importing GPX files (exported from MotionBased). Everything seems fine until I hit the "Import" button, after which I get the world map view then it quickly changes to a map of my default address. This started happening last week. Again, never had this before. Have tried IE and Firefox in Vista and Safari and Firefox in OS X. Same on each.

(The problem I used to have was a timing out of the script that required me to keep hitting a "continue" button to make sure it went to the end.)

Hi,

I'm new to running (well, new to paying attention to my running and racing) and I did my second ever 5K this past weekend in 34:16. Not the greatest time, but it was 2 minutes better than my pre-baby time! I've signed up for another 5K in mid-October and one mid-Nov. Is it reasonable to think that I can shave 4 minutes off by Oct and maybe get close to 25 minutes by Nov? At the moment I teach middle school full time and have a 17 month old, so all of my running will likely be at about 4:30 in the morning!

Thanks for any help

To whom do I report- GPS does not match MMR values?

So- I've been using MMR since mid July, I believe, and have been very happy to have it, both as a training/logging tool and a way to keep me motivated. My GPS was also dead during this time and I could not use it to keep track of my mileage, so this site was especially helpful. Thanks!

But, I recently replaced said GPS, and have found that the new unit (Garmin Etrex Legend) records shorter distances on my runs than the mapping function at MMR. I've gotta guess that the GPS is correct, and that the Google maps functionality which I have supposed MMR uses is somewhat, um, squishy,or inexact? So, my questions is: To what degree have other users noticed errors in their MMR logged runs vs. GPS readings?

So far I've seen .5 difference in a 6 mile run (GPS reads 5.97 and MMR reads 6.45) and .25 or so in a 10 mile run (GPS reads 10.0 while MMR reads 10.24). Once I've found the correct cable for the GPS I'll download my run logs and compare them directly to my point and click MMR logs, and see if it's possible that the difference lies there.

Thanks.

Steve

Map My Run,

Just wanted to post a testimonial to Map My Run for your great site. I have been using this site as a training tool for my first race: The Lewis & Clark Half Marathon in St. Charles, MO. What a great resource! Keep up the good work and let me know what I can do to help spread the word about this great site.

Who Wants to Streak?

Catchy title? I like to use "streaks" as motivation. For the purpose of this forum, I'm seeing if anyone would like to keep track of their own personal streak along with me.

Here's the rules (quite simple) - If you do an activity that you have set aside as exercise, training, or a workout - it's a streak day. To be considered a "Streak Day" the activity should be no less than 20 minutes. As long as you complete one of these sessions in 24 hours, it counts. It doesn't matter if you walk, run, cycle, or crawl. But it must be an activity you set aside purposely for exercise (no - not mowing the lawn).

To get started, just respond to this post. I'll keep track of all the "streakers" every few days. My next post is an example of what you can do. You can say as much as as little as you like. Unfortunately, if you BUST, you must admit it and go back to "0". A BUST is when you miss a day. To be fair to those who already have long streaks already going, the streak date begins September 1st. To get started, count the number days in a row you have done an activity 20 minutes or more since September 1st, 2007. For example, mine is 13.
