I have recently begun mountain bicycling with my 10 year old daughter. We have a mostly flat creekside trail near our home she has ridden on with me, plus some trails in the state park along the local river on a few weekends. I have yet to take her to any "serious" off-road venues.

Does anyone else here do family off road rides? What have you learned about sharing your sport with your kid(s)? What type of trails do you look for?

So looking for tips on how to climb hills while mountain biking. I am getting so frustrated by getting half way up the hill stalling and then falling side ways. It happens almost every single time and it is so annoying. Just wondering what I am supposed to be doing. I know I am suppose to switch to a lower gear but am I suppose to try to keep the same cadence or pedal alot faster. I do not know just need some help.

calculating calories by distance, not time

The mapping function here is pretty cool, but the calorie calculations are not working for me. If I map a ride at 14 miles (yesterday's ride) but don't have my exact time, the site gives me different answers for how many calories I burned based on how long I estimate the ride took. That's obviously wrong - it takes a certain number of calories to move a given mass (my body and bike) a given distance no matter how fast I go. If I say it took 2 hours, the site says I burned twice as many calories as if it took 1 hour - which is nonsense - going slower and taking more breaks doesn't burn more calories!

Does anyone know of any sites that calculate calories based on weight and distance? Even better if they take terrain (altitude changes) into account, and of course that they have a separate category for "mountain biking" that doesn't think all mountain biking is BMX or the same as road biking.

Thanks!

I'm new to Mnt. Bike riding, though not too new on bikes in general. Looking for some fun, EASY trails to start and anyone interested in riding.

If you are a rider or a group that goes out often I'd love to join you. If it's an out and back trail that I can cut short so I can work up to your level it would be great.

I don't want to interupt anyones ride, but riding alone would be stupid, ESPECIALLY at this point.

Hey all, I went mountain biking the other day for the first time in a couple years. My bike was getting a bit long in the tooth a couple of years ago and I think I am finally ready to make the plunge into full suspension. (My old mountian bike is a rigid.) I am not looking for a downhill bike or anything too agressive. I will be using it for XC mostly, but I don't want to be afraid to try a couple jumps here or there.

Ilike going uphill, so I don't want something too squishy. Anyone have any ideas?

Hey Guys!

Here's a question for you.....I was off road the other day and to make a long story short, I smashed in to a tree going full blast. My handlbar whipped around and jabbed my in the upper right thigh. I was so pumped up, I pretty much climbed back on my bike, fixed my mangled shifters as good as I could and kept going for about two more hours.

When I finally did stop and take measure of my injuries, I could tell the lick my leg took was serious and it was already swelling. I knew my leg wasn't broken but I was sure that the handlebar went all the way down to the bone separating the fat and muscle.

Anyway, I had nasty looking bruise for about 2 weeks that slowly migrated down my leg and disappated. But, I now have this HUGE bulge on my thigh that seems to be full of fluid. The best way I can describe it is a silicone boob stuck to my leg.

Does anyone know what this is and have you ever had anything like this? I hate to go to the doctor for a bruise but it's been about 3 weeks and it's still there?

Next weekend I am riding as part of a team in the 24hr Of Great Glen Mountain Bike Race. I have never competed in a 24hr. race before. I am looking for eating suggestions for in between laps the will not be heavy but give me the energy my body will need. I plan to use gels while riding my laps as needed. I hate to feel full while riding so I tend to under eat and sometimes bonk. This won't cut it in this type of race.

All suggestions or comments are appreciated.

Thanks!
