I have just experimented with a route input. I found it operated more quickly than the current version, and I don't mind the blue line. However the ability to adjust the location of the clicked points as you go around has gone. I liked to sometimes just slightly relocate a plotted point - espcially if I have benusing the map and then go to satellite view and realise that they are slightly out of kilter. Additionally for some reason part of the plotted route line went grey after I had plotted it and it is harder to see esp on the satellite view. Not sure of the value of that unless you are overlapping on the route. Should be an option.

Hope that helps.

PS this mapping site is absolutely fabulous (abfab) to help on training and motivation and planning. Keep it up! It woudl be interesting if on one of the newsletters you gave an idea to members of what sort of people use the site and where they are based. Is there a strong worldwide membership? The advertising suggests it is strongly USA oriented. But please keep on letting other countries use this site!

I am new to MapMyRide, I joined today. However, I am finding it very useful so far. One thing that I always thought would be useful for a cycling map marker would be a dog image. When I lived in Indiana and had routes I rode, there were always dogs at certain houses in the country. It has not been a problem for me since moving to the Dallas area.

However, it would be a good idea to have a marker for dog specific hazards.

1. Once you click to place a Marker (i.e. Aid or water) you can not cancel placing the Marker. The Marker sticks to your pointer.

2. You can not delete or remove a marker on a map.

3. Every time I open a new screen to either view a run, rate a run or create a new run, I am forced to sign in.

4. I was forwarded to a website called mapmyride, not mapmyrun.

5. I am unable to edit or change my route using the new beta system after it is saved.

6. When I view the route on the website, my markers do not appear.

7. There are no instructions how to use the "loop" or "out and back" feature.

Things are still a bit slow (tho at first I attributed this to the fact that, I suppose, many more users are testing it since the email announcement of the new beta engine). i find things a bit faster this afternoon (several hours later)... but still kinda clunky.

the most chronic issue is that i keep getting these "loop backs"... where I attempt to plot the next point up the road (while using "follow roads" feature) and I get the point I want but it also makes some crazy loop back up the road to where I just came from using some "as the crow flies" or other road-following path. it makes a mess of thngs... tho i have noticed that if you keep clicking "undo" repeatedly (and I mean dozens of clicks) you can slowly erase the errant part of the path and restore things to normal. but then when you try to plot the next point you get a similar issue. haven't tested this enough... but I believe the problem gets worse on longer routes (not sure on that). i wa working with a 40 or 50 mile route.

also I am seeing a good elevation profile... but it seems as if I am not getting a cumulative figure on climbing anywhere. am i missing this?

apparently no "notes" yet to see the "left & rights" and other additional info you add at markers.

i ask to NOT see the mile markers... but I still get them.

i try to adjust the mile marker increments and get very odd numbers and can't restore the increments to something simple like "1" or "5".

it seems as if there aren't any "points" for me to delete or drag around to edit the route. am i missing something here? or are they coming soon?

could use other icon markers... especially one for "Food".

it seems as if i can create maps in the new beta engine... but can't open old maps in it? can i edit old maps using the beta engine?

OK that's it for now. I am happy to see some progress. But things are still too rough to work with. I hope our feedback helps!

thanks for all your efforts,
Victor

I like the interface from a graphical point of view. The icons are nice.

I tried an attempt at a small map and noticed there was no end-point or point to point recognition. I used to be able to adjust point along the route to straighten them out or otherwise conform them to the hybrid map, but I could not do this.

I run a bike club web site and we'd love to have a product like this that actually works. My past experience has been that ALL PRODUCTS, like this that are based on Google Maps API are basically at the alpha code level and never should have been released as ready for public use. So I was interested in seeing the beta announcement and went in to create a trial route. Same experience as in the old days. I wound up with two starting points and couldn't eliminate or move either. Undo only worked for the last event. If you get screwed up it looks like you have to clear the whole route.

I really do hope you are making progress with the mapping engine behind the scenes and that something reliable will be released. But please test it first, I couldn't go beyond 5 minutes with the beta code that exists today before giving up in frustration.

Perhaps I'm missing it, but I don't see the labels for the map views. Under the map, I see teal bars that I played with until I found that the first is for normal street map, the second is for satellite view, and the third is for hybrid. Have to say, though, that the satellite view is stunning in its clarity. I see the imagery is updated to 2008, and for Rosslyn, VA, I can even see in great resolution the sky bridges. Good on ya!

Great to see that the "follow road" feature has been implemented for New Zealand routes. Thank you. Will be a huge help for long rides, and improve accuracy of routes that some people implement with the maps not zoomed in.

It does do some strange things at times. (Creating surprising loops) Still working out whether that is a function of the software, or how I'm using it.

I can make maps in the beta engine and save them to my profile. But I can't find a place to open an old map or even re-open the newly created map in the new engine to attempt to edit it in the BETA route maker.

Is this feature coming?

I ask because it's the editing part of the process which used to be the slowest. Opening a map was not so slow... but asking to edit the route was the process that usually grinds things to a halt.

I don't see much activity here. I'm just checking to see is this forum is live.

If so, can someone give a general update on the state of the new engine, as well as a ballpark timeline for its development/refinement?

I really look forward to a day when I can create long (30 mile plus) bike routes which don't bog down my browser to a point of almost crashing it. The way it goes these days is I get hopeful, start plotting a new map and then things start freezing up... even on Firefox with 2 gb of ram on my MAC. So after a hopeful try at working quickly, I usually go away for a week or so then return hoping to see changes or improvements. But alas...

I'm not complaing, just wondering.

Thanks,

If I'm on the beta engine page and I attempt to open a pre-existing map of mine, does it open in the new engine or in the old engine. I suspect it's the old... so I am unable to see how my maps work in the new engine and I therefore can't attempt to edit them in the new engine.

Is this correct?

I had tried this awhile back with no success. Tried again today ...WHOA!!!! and I was able to upload the 'trace' from my bike rides with friends. It appears as though all traces(what do you call them??) still on the edge uploaded at one time. However, I was only able to save them one by one by reloading and then choosing the next one I wanted after the upload to save. I also was able to edit one of these for the first time and was able to create my routeslip(I was at Ryan's awhile:-). The notes as you call them were cumbersome because some did not take..that is I entered a description of a turn but after I saved the whole thing, several of the descriptors were gone. I went back and rechecked and reentered the turns and think I have a workable 'routeslip' for a route I rode with my club. How cool is that? You've come a long way in supplying an important feature for me. However, still cannot load from a .gpx file created from the garmin. Just directly from the garmin edge 305. YESSSS!!!!Keep up the great work
