So after a bit of a hiatus we ought to talk about a new look for 2009. Afterall by the looks of things you hardworking folks deserve some new pimped out graphics, am I right? And when I say revamp I mean REVAMP. That silly old thumb drive never showed up so all of my prior work is gone. Of course I could redo it but who wants a Gremlin when you can have a GTS. Right?

So what would you like to see? A new group graphic? New siganature? Global map? Avatars?

What I really want to hear is what inspires you? Is it Low-Rider magazine girls or is it Nike style? Who are the heros of your sport that get you pumped up and ready churn out a burner at 5 am? What gear are you going to reward yourself with?

Tell me...

Here's a 2009 Team Challenge for everyone to participate in...

10,000mi by years end. This should be easily doable. This year so far we've covers close to 8,600 mi, so 10,000mi isn't that far out of reach.

Think we need more? Should we make it 12,000mi, 15,000mi, 20,000mi to challenge everyone? What do you think?

Somehow, if Floridan wouldn't mind, we could add a "distance countdown" on the front page so everyone can see just how far we have left and to me, it's a sense of accomplishment :)

Opinions? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Here we go again - I'm seeing bugs again at MapMyRide.

On Sunday I entered workouts for 12/13 and 12/14, and I updated my virtual route. When I saved it, I changed the name to "SteveCycle Virtual Ride 2008".

After my workout today I went to my training log and the 12/13 and 12/14 workouts were gone. No big deal, I just entered them again.

But now I see that my virtual ride is back to the old name, and when I click on it, it loads a big fat NOTHING.

Hi Guys

Sorry to go quiet for a month, but I got knocked out of commission briefly.

I don't want to freak anyone out, but last month I had a mini-stroke. I woke up one morning and my right hand and the right side of my mouth were numb and tingling. My hand felt like I had slept on it funny, my mouth felt like I'd had a shot of novocaine. When I brushed my teeth it was clear that the right side of my tongue was numb, the left side was just fine. THAT got my attention big-time. So I called my doctor, and he said to get to the ER right away.

I spent 2 days in the hospital. They ran all kinds of tests, all came back fine. I never had any symptoms besides the numbness, and that has been slowly going away over the last 4 weeks. I'm on one aspirin a day now. The doctor says I should go back to all my activities: keep exercising, biking, everything I was doing before.

Anyway, I'm in California now but it looks like I'll fall some 300 miles short of my goal for 2008. At least I have my health!

I have a question for those who do any distance training.

I am planning a century ride next year. What type of nutrition should I plan to bring? Steve, I know you have some experience in centuries. How much do you eat while you ride? What do you eat? I don't have a lot experience with gels, and like Power Bars. I welcome anyone's input.

Thanks,

What's going on in October?

Looks like I've pretty much given up on the stationary bike here in the hotel in Iowa. It's killing my legs, it's boring, uncomfortable, and all of the above. I'm still waiting to get home, buy a real road bike and start logging miles. Looks like that won't happen until Nov., so my miles will probably be a little lower.

I am wrapping up my training for my 10k on Nov 1. I have a 10k Nov 1, and a 5k on Nov 22. Should be a good month of running. Hopefully after then, I'll have my bike! I'm still looking at the Cannondale CAAD9 6 triple too! :)

How about you? Anybody have any really good goals for the month? If you do, good luck on it and we'd love to hear about it!

I've got the California border in my sights, but I'm really going to have to push it to make 3000 miles. There are roughly 10 weeks left in 2008 so I need to average 50 miles a week from here on out. That's not easy on a spinning bike, so I need a few more weekends of good weather to rack up some miles. Wish me luck!

Steve,

If you wouldn't mind, I could use some pointers and advice regarding some bikes. I mentioned earlier I was looking at a Lemond Etape Triple, but I think I've changed my mind, and could use some help. I found out that the Lemond line is going to vanish, and my local shop isn't going to carry anything for it, once they sell their stock, so now I'm looking at a few other lines. I'm hoping you may be able to help guide me :)

One. I'm currently in Iowa and will be here until late Nov/early Dec. and I'm actually looking to buy the bike here and ship it home when I go to leave. Do you see anything really wrong w/ that? I'm aware that I won't have the maintenance plans that some offer, but in your opionion, how vital is that?

Two. I went to two different shops and told them I was in the market. Both gave me catalogs and ideas to look into, but I'm still just as confused. Could you possibly be willing to help out with some of them?

Their selections:

Trek 1.5 http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/1_series/15/

Specialized Allez Triple http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=32192

Cannondale CAAD9 http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/08/cusa/model-8RA96T.html

Cannondale Synapes Sport http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/08/cusa/model-8RAY7T.html

All of them are pretty reasonable in price and very comparable between the selling price, but then again, I'm not sure if some should be at that asking price. Do you have any particular opinions regarding any of those? Or anything that I should caution myself with?

I'm proud to report that I accomplished my September goal of back-to-back centuries last weekend. The routes from my Garmin are here and here.

The weather was perfect for cycling. Overcast but dry, no wind, highs both days just a little above 70. I'm tired -- very tired -- but not in any pain. Still, you won't see me leaping out of my chair or climbing any stairs today!

On my virtual tour, those 200 miles got me through Seattle, down into Oregon and half-way to Hwy 101. I'm now less than 750 miles away from the Golden Gate Bridge.

How is September looking for you guys?

Even though I'm relocated to Iowa for a few months, I somehow managed to find a nice 5k, called the Dream Big 5k race set up for this Sunday. Granted, it's no 10/half/or full marathon, but apparently it's a small local race for this town, and it will work as a good training run for me too. I picked up my packet and my number is #65. I am currently the last one to register. Yea it's that small.

I'm pretty excited about it too. This will be my first race back since I fractured my leg in April, and had to rebuild my running program. I've been using the FIRST book, that JB mentioned a while back, so I should be pretty prepared. I sure hope so.

Currently I'm pushing somewhere between 15-20mi/week in running and then another 40-60mi/wk on the bike, so the aerobic level is there; I'll just need to be calm for the run.

Just thought I'd share my excitement.

I rolled over 1900 miles this weekend.

Also this weekend I created a new route map, which took me hours (while watching the Olympics) and four attempts. The things I learned about making long routes:

Don't use markers. Markers are evil and screw up routes.

Save often.

Close your browser occasionally. MMR plus Firefox plus long routes equals a lot of memory. Closing the browser gives it all back.

Sessions STILL log you out after a little more than one hour.

Auto route works (if you are careful), and Undo works (mostly).

The biggest problem is when you create a route of a precise distance, after you save the route, the total distance changes. My route should be 1904 miles, but when you view it, it says 1911 miles. That sucks. Are you guys seeing that too?
Lostsheep, ehirning, looks like you have me beat over the first week in August.

All you have to do now is stay in front, and maybe hope for more rain in St. Louis!

While we wait for MMF to get map editing working again, we can still keep track of our group's progress by clicking on the "Training" link on the group's home page. Here's the direct link:

http://www.mapmyride.com/community/groups/808713641275/training

It only works month-by-month, but it's better than nothing.

Guys

On September 6 & 7, I will be riding in the annual Missouri Bike MS ride to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The ride is 150 miles through central Missouri, with options for 100 miles each day. Last year I completed the century both days, and I'm hoping to do the same this year. These are the routes:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/mo/columbia/21129009

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/mo/columbia/174767430

I need sponsors for the ride. If you would please consider making a tax-deductable donation to the MS Society, click here for my rider info and hit the "Donate to Steve" button on the top left side.

Thanks for your consideration!

Just wondering if there is any progress on editing the long routes in this group. It's been a week, can someone at MMF give us a status update?

Well, it now takes my computer about 5 minutes to draw my route when I click on it or try to edit. After the first draw, it works fine.

Anybody else having problems with their routes?

Seems like it's been quite a while since we've heard from our illustrious group leader. Did he get lost like his thumb drive?

When I tried to view my route today, it was only 483 miles. On my route list it still says 1,560.15 miles.

What do you guys see when you view my route?

I love the report feature of Map My Run. It really is motivating when you see your progress in that format. Here is mine:

If you would like to post an image of your chart you can use this html:

<a href="Insert Web Address to your favorite website" target="_blank"><img src="Insert link to your Image" border="0" alt="Insert a title for your Chart" width="400" height="407" /></a>

Simply replace the italics with your custom info. Leave the quotations.

Example: <a href="http://www.indie1031.fm/4045_Listen_Live.php?id=27" target="_blank"><img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e60/uneyed/dISTANCE.jpg" border="0" alt="Steady As She Goes." width="400" height="407" /></a>

If you need any help let me know.
