How have people been with their training so far?

Several weeks ago I started but since then have had a nasty flu, cough and soar throat.  I feel like I've lost considerable time this year with my training.  Which is upsetting me quite a bit.

How about everyone else?  I hope your all having a more productive training season than I so far.

    Antonio.

    Hi Antonio

I just went through a two week period that I didn't get to ride. It was almost like withdrawal. I finally got out yesterday for a quick 25 km. ride and I was quite surprised how strong I felt on the hills. I plan to go out again tomorrow for a 50-60 km ride up to Newmarket and back.

I calculated today that with the club rides that I have planned over the next six weeks that I am right on track to reach at least 1200 km by July.

You can keep track of your training within this site by clicking "My Training Log".  You can also see how/what others are doing in our group by clicking "My Groups" and then "Leader Board" .  Right now there only seems to be two of us keeping track, which is twice as many as last year when I was on my own!  I think you will not have a problem riding the event Antonio, it will just be more enjoyable the better shape you are in and you still have time.

Hope you are feeling better soon, Antonio. Very hard to prepare for a major tour when one is less than 100%. So far this season I've been able to log 100 km+ each week and am now approaching 800 km since April 1st. (Being retired helps!) My rides are not all that long (35-70 km) and so I will now have to build up some distance. I may begin to pull the B.O.B. trailer for some added resistance on the hills: not sure if that's a good idea given that the tour is relatively flat and what I need to do is spin smoothly for 4-5 hours a day. Ugh! Like riding the trainer in the rec room during the long winter months! At least the scenery will change during the coming tour! Mike

    Hi guys

You know, Mike, I just couldn't get into riding the trainer last winter - no matter how much I knew I should. It was just too boring, even watching TV. Hmm - maybe that's the problem, I hardly ever watch TV.

Anyway, I rode up to Mt. Albert and back on Sunday (from Richmond Hill) - 72 km. Lotsa climbin' - I was plumb tuckered out. Good ride though - excellent weather. Brings me up to 700km. June 6/7 weekend I'm riding with my brother's club (Niagara Freewheelers) St Catherines to Port Dover and back the next day. Two over 100 km days - if I can manage that the GWTA will seem like childsplayLaughing.

Hey mike, I hear ya on the retired thing - I'm semi-retired.

Doug, Thanks for your reply. I, too, had trouble riding indoors over the winter. Not very much to motivate me, I'm afraid. I tried a DVD from the "Spinerval" series, but found it to be pretty aggressive. The best of the three I tried was called "sweating buckets". And it did just that! My wife and I are just back from the Canadian Tandem Rally in Leamington. A great ride over 4 days with 43 tandem bikes. Quite a sight! Sunday was a tough 77 km with a head wind and rain. The terrain is so flat down there one never stops pedalling! We don't mind a good hill if it allows us to coast down the other side! Good luck with your Port Dover ride. I've done that, and it's a wonderful "cycling friendly" part of the province. Mike

Thanks for everyone's responses.  I appreciated hearing from other's experiences so far in getting ready for the tour.  Unfortunately since my first post I've also gone through pneumonia.  It's pathetic but I am making a comeback.

I started riding (lightly) Monday and am aiming to ride everyday up until the ride.  Altogether, I believe I've racked up 300km from my rides, this is including from before I got sick.  So I am feeling a bit behind but I'm staying positive and making sure I stay focused.
