MMR Folks:

I tried mapping a route with automatic road/turn notes today. Generally that works but this time part of my return route overlapped the outbound route. Automatically generated notes are completely screwed up in this case. Simple example - see:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/us/il/979124451372658369

For the overlapped section some return notes are duplicates of the outbound notes, and some are just missing.

In another example all the outbound notes were doubled and all return notes were missing. I can't duplicate that case. It was on the following route which now has several outbound notes duplicated in place of the correct return notes.

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/us/il/907124451448262397

You need to fix this! You need to test this stuff before you release it!

I am also having this problem. I create a route with several turns. The notes look fine. I then press the "out and back" button and the mileage doubles, but no new notes are created for the turns going back to the starting point. see example: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/tx/georgetown/447124499174619543 .

I've tried this in both IE8 and Firefox 3.0.11 and get the same result.

If I do not use the "out and back" button and manually create by clicking on the return route back to the starting point the notes are not created for the return route. So the result is the same as using the "out and back" button.

Thanks Guys -- There's been some recent issues with overlapping notes and note deletion stuff that we're working on. I'll post a follow-up when we get to the bottom of it. I apologize for it not being perfect for your use right now...

Cheers,

-Kevin

The notes aren't working right for me either. The notes that show up when I save the route aren't what's showing up on the printed pdf.

MMR/Kevin - more examples of the problem:

Demo Stage B
http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/us/il/116124710393479458
0.00 mi Start
0.21 mi Turn right at Saratoga Ave
0.35 mi Turn left at Palmer St
0.59 mi Turn left at Dunham Rd
0.93 mi Turn right at Concord Dr
1.18 mi Turn left at Springside Ave
1.48 mi Turn left at 71st St
1.71 mi Turn left at Dunham Rd
2.51 mi Turn left at Palmer St
2.65 mi Turn right at Saratoga Ave

The 2.51 mi "Turn left at Palmer St" is the correct instruction for that location for the outbound portion at 0.35 , but not for the return. also:

The 2.65 mi "Turn right at Saratoga Av" is the correct instruction for that location for the outbound portion at 0.21 , but not for the return.

So the instructions are getting mixed up at points with the exact same coordinates. The return instruction is missing and the outbound instruction appears twice. Also clicking on "View" for 2.51 miles gives the 0.35 instruction (The "Info" tab also gives 0.35 even when the 2.51 "View" is clicked).

The 2.29 mi instruction is missing.

I think I also had cases where the outbound instruction got replaced by the return instruction for the exact same location (revere error compared to the above).

MMR - you need to fix this. Auto-turn-recording is the only reason I use MMR. There are many free sites that are better in most respects, but they don't have auto-turn-recording. It's your ace in hand!

====== meanwhile, folks: =====

If you rely on auto-notes and if your route retraces any segment, even for only one road, split it into two routes that don't retrace anything.

I cannot map any route with autonotes where outbound and inbound share one or more sections of roads. This will cause the notes to get corrupted.

Even worse, if you "Undo" the sections of overlap, the autonotes will likely be irreversibly corrupted.

This is a very serious flaw.

I have developed an INCREDIBLY PAINFUL workaround that would overcome the bug of out-and-back routes, or those with some overlapping sections and the associated auto-notes corruption:

CAUSE: best I can tell, the issue happens when you have "Follow-Roads" enabled. Going over the same road sections with "Follow-Roads" turned on will cause both routes to share those auto-generated square route markers. If one of those square, yet unlabeled markers, is shared between both routes, adding a note (with AutoNotes or manually) will permanently corrupt the notes list.

WORKAROUND:

1. Enable Follow-Roads and Auto-Notes for all non-overlapping sections of your route.
2. On overlapping sections, enable Follow-Roads up to sections and turns where you'll want to have notes (this can include before/after a turn, before after any other makers you'd like to add like food, climb, etc).
3. Turn off Follow-Roads and Auto-Notes.
4. Manually plot the overlapping section where the Note will need to be assigned.
5. As you manually plot these small turn sections, separate each overlapping route so you'll later be able to tell which pass is which. What I do is plot along the driving lane instead of default middle of road. The result will be two visibly distinct route lines when I zoom into the map.
6. Manually add the notes to these sections by slowly approaching the square markers with your mouse pointer until you get the pointing hand. To make sure you're annotating the correct marker, once you get the pop-up dialog for the marker, click on the "info" tab, which will display the distance to that point.
7. Click on "View Notes" to validate this was added correctly.
8. If your manually-entered notes follow the syntax and case convention of Auto-Notes (i.e. "Turn right..." instead of "Turn Right..."), you'll also get the correct icons assigned to your notes.
9. On overlapping sections where you don't need any notes (i.e. just going on same road, or going a second time around same loop), you can turn "Follow-Roads" back on, but leave "Auto-Notes" off to avoid corruption.
10. Once you're back plotting non-overlapping sections, AutoNotes can be enabled again.

MMR -

Well guys, it's been 3 months since this bug has been reported.

WHEN IS IT GOING TO BE FIXED ?

Here is a nice simple example:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/us/il/602125349834396298 .

Even www.BikeRouteToaster.com gets it right. Why can't MMR? They use the same Google Maps API you do. It can't be that complicated. Take a look at it and fix it already.

How about fixing this one. It's still screwed up. Another example:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/us/il/199125565570022665 .

It's pretty trivial to demonstrate and test. Your programmers should plot some test routes (with auto turn notes) now an then :-)

BTW RideWithGPS.com gets it right - see:

Looks like "edit" opened a new reply, and there is no delete! Never had that happen before.

Saving editted notes doesn't work. The online video tutorial is out-of-date. Can you help?
