So, how did your second tri compare to your first? I just registered for my first -- Top Gun, St Petersbug, Aug 1st. I'm pretty nervous. Do you mind if I bombard you with stupid newbie questions for the next 6 weeks? Congratulations! Patty

Hit me up Patty. I don't mind one bit!

This one wasn't bad. I'll take the results, but I'm going to have to work hard to move up in my age bracket.

    400yrd swim - 5:07 - 7th place; 13mi bike - 46:10 - 26th place; 3.1mi run - 28:03 - 38th place

Overall #25/46 in the 24-29 age group.

Anything in particular you'd like information on?

My concerns are probably pretty silly. Here they are in no particular order: getting bonked on the head in the swim, not being able to find my bike, not remembering where to return my bike, and proper etiquette. I don't have an aggressive bone in my body, I can just picture myself saying "Oh, excuse me, pardon me, no you first, etc." Oh, and I also don't want to come in dead last. The event is capped at 900 people and it always sells out. I don't want to be in 900th place. (OK, I know you can't help with the last one) Thanks a bunch, Patty

    Patty,

Don't worry. I'll see what I can do to help you out in the order you mentioned.

Getting hit in the head - Do you know your race number? Usually you provide a swim time and that is what chooses your order for the swim. If not, it will go by age group. For my last swim, I went pretty conservative with the time, and cruised. I passed a majority of the folks in my group. Plus, it will possibly be a wave start. They can range from 0:05sec to 5:00min inbetween waves. You'll do fine. Only once did someone actually grab my ankle, but it was minor.

Finding your bike - Laugh now, but some folks brough odd shaped helium baloons to tie to the racks by their bike. When you get to the transition, count the number of racks you are from the entry/exit. Remember that number. Try to find something that sticks out close by (light pole, tree, asphalt marker) and make a note of it.

Being aggressive - Stay to the right when out on the bike, and you won't have any issues. Remember though, you have 15seconds to make a pass if you get within 3 bike lenghts. Make your pass, and let them try to catch back up. If you do that, you won't have any issues. And each person is minding their own business during the race, you won't be in the way.

Oh yea, invest in tri shorts & a tri top. The shorts have a smaller pad and dry faster. Plus you can swim and run in them freely. The top is a little snug so that it won't drag when you swim, plus it has a cyclist pocket on the back. Great investment.

Also, look into a race belt. (cheap belt your race number attaches to) so that you won't have to fight to pin your number on when going out for the run. You can pick it up and run.

Did that help? What more do you want? What are you distances again and which one is it? I'll be happy to offer more if you want it.
