    Far North Side jogger shot in robbery attempt

    A Rogers Park jogger who couldn't hear what his assailants wanted because he was listening to loud music through earphones was shot when he ultimately pushed their gun aside and tried to run away, police said.

    The 30-year-old man was reported in stable condition at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston following the attack, said Rogers Park Police District Capt. Thomas Libert.

    The shooting happened in an alley in the 7000 block of North Sheridan Road after the man was approached by two men just after 10 p.m., Libert said.

    Because the victim had headphones on and was listening to loud music, he at first was unable to hear what the two attackers were saying as one of them confronted him with a handgun, Libert said. The man pushed away the gun and also apparently started to flee and was shot in the shoulder, Libert said.

    The man was able to escape and call authorities, and was taken to St. Francis, Libert said.

    Detailed descriptions of the attackers were not available, he said.

    Okay, this fellow has near-terminal stupidity. Regardless of being able to hear them or not, the gun in your face should be a clear indication of the other person not having your best interest in mind. And I don't care if you are Usaine Bolt, you are not going to outrun a bullet.

    I did see an interview with him on the news.  I wouldn't call him stupid after that.  His choices weren't too good at the time.  One of his mistakes was running down an alley @ 10PM in Rogers Park here in Chicago.  It does say it happened near the 7000 block of North Sheridan too.  I actually ran in that area a few times last year, in the day time that is.  That's the east side of Rogers Park, it's not the worst place in Chicago, but it still has its problems too.  He might have been alright if he stayed on Sheridan Road, even @ 10PM there's plenty of traffic on that road.  Running with the headphones on made it easier for the bandits to approach him too.  From what he said he didn't really have anything to steal besides his iPod.

     PS The picture of me in my avatar was actually shot off of Sheridan Road too.  It's in Wilmette and 5.2 miles north of 7000 N. Sheridan Road. Surprised

    I would NEVER run after the sun goes down. I dont care how safe the area is.

    ? - Exactly; stupid or not, what was the gunman after? - and even if he couldn't hear on first contact, surely the outcome would have been the same, Ipod or not, as his eventual actions indicate he would have run anyway - naked or carrying a portable stereo.

    As for not running in the dark, I'm with 'Adwileski' - besides, the gunmen are less likely to see you you anyhow!

    Are Ipods THAT sought after in Chicago?

    I would NEVER live in a place that you could not run after dark...I don't care how suburban that makes me. ;-)

    I live in Rogers Park.  I usually run after work.  The previous commenter is right.  The area has it's issues but overall I've not had any issues.  It helps that I run with my 115lb German Shepard most of the time.  :)

    For me since I refuse to run in the dark, was to join my gym to do a little extra strenth training during the week and run on the weekend...in the sunlight

    I am lucky to live in the area where there's just no crime, literally. And I run in a park next to a military base. Sometimes I see military guys training - some people find it disturbing, but to me it gives a sense of safety.
