Help!: google earth 3d view

Hi,

 I'm a new user and am having trouble viewing the 3d map via google earth.  When I choose to view the run in 3d the software creates an xml file - do I save this or do I need to associate the Google earth software to open it?  When I try to open files from google earth the program doesn't allow me to open the downloaded xml file.
