Has anyone changed a hrm battery that was supposed to be dealer-serviced only? I have a Polar RS200, and the Polar site says I'm supposed to trek it down to one store in downtown LA or mail it out there. I'm wondering if it will still work right if I just have a local watch place do it. Doesn't seem like it should need anything special, right?
Thanks!
Ideally it should not need anything special. When I was working at a LBS though, the one reason why we did not sell Polar products was because they all *required* a trip/shipment to an "authorized service center." The reason that Polar claimed for this was to reseal the watertight seal on the back of the watch.
So, with that being said, I would think that any watch place that deals with dive watches should be able to do it.
If you don't require a watertight seal (not using it in the rain, to dive, or in triathlons) then you could do it yourself. This usually requires a small screwdriver, patience and the willingness to DIY.
'dealer service only' is a marketing term. It's your product, you purchased it. You can choose to fix it youself or engage a professional to fix anything you buy. The only thing it will affect is warranty, which probably has expired anyway. The problem is if something goes wrong it is your problem and may not be fixed by an 'authorised agent' afterwards.
If it is out of warranty you can do what you like, actually you can do what you like while under warranty too but may void that warranty and you may be stuck with an expensive piece of junk.
My choice is 'stick it to the manufacturer' and choose your local reputable service agent .
Oooh - I didn't think of a dive shop or place that deals with dive watches. I would like it to stay waterproof so I can swim with it. I'll probably check that out.
Has anyone actually done this and had good results?
i've had a couple of watch batteries replaced in water 'proof' watches at different watch places that offer the service, no problems. apparently they do some sort of pressure test when replacing the batery if your watch is supposed to be able to go under water.
sweet. thanks!
and i'll let you know how it goes.
CAREFUL!!! In October I had a local watch repair service change the battery in my Polar F55. When I then sent it to Polar because the unit still seemed unstable, Polar advised that any work done on the watch [not the strap battery] VOIDS THE WARRANTY. [All Polar units are warranted for two years from date of purchase.]
After some repeated discussion... they finally relented and charged only for the [second] new battery they installed and comped the 'maintenance check' they do when the unit is in for service.
Polar HRM's are more than simply a watch. They are fitness computers and need to be serviced by specialists...
Also be advised, that the LA service [Time-Tec] is not the same company as the New York service center for Polar USA. Although they are 'authorized service', stick with the Polar service, IF your unit is still under the 2-yr Warranty Period.
They were fast...and reasonable to work with. The repair is also trackable online if you use the Polar Electro USA repair Center. Go the Polar USA site:
http://www.polarusa.com/us-en/support/service?product=&category=Service+Information
Then start your repair order online to track.
Sorry if I sound preachy, but hope to prevent you making a mistake that might void your warranty.
