Has anybody here completed the RAAM event or done a coast to coast route in the states. Myslef along with three mates and a crew of 5 are in the middle of training for it and are going from San Francisco to Daytona Beach Florida in March 2009...

If anybody's done a similar event, if you've got any pointers, or any prepration hints, please drop a thread.

We're raising money for the Noahs Ark Appeal and the Childrens Hospital for Wales in the UK, so for more info please visit www.coast2coast-usa.org

If you've got any logistical pointers also, please drop a thread.

    Cheers!!

Check out the route planned by Geoff of Jay's Cycle Center.

He started further south in San Diego as it was late October and headed east to the Natchez Trace. From there his route wouldn't be of any use as he headed north.

I was one of the four riders for Team Tyler in 1998.  Support is as important as the riders.  You have to have people that are on top of the situation at all times.  The rider has no brain.  One handler for each rider. The rider and the support have to trust each other implicitly.

Following right on the heals of support is nutrition.  You have to learn what you can eat.  Practice eating while riding.

We experimented with several strategies, the one that worked the best was to split into two teams of two.  Each team is responsible for two six hour blocks per day.  This allows for the handlers and riders to get almost adequate sleep.

We had three vehicles: large direct support van that stayed with the rider on the road; RV for sleepers; small van for errands (buying fresh food, laundry, etc.).  The RV drove ahead to the next exchange. While driving, riders and handlers ate.  Once there, everyone slept.

Communication was weak back then.  If you use a GPS, practice with it.  For that matter, practice with all your equipment: be it cell phones or changing a tire on a vehicle.

    Good luck
