    Hi all,

    Shader, welcome!

Tranquil, you're getting great advice here.  I agree with what you've been told, be sure to get lots of rest and focus on everything you have done to get here.

Wow, 2 in Boston possibly...very cool.  Makes me realize how far I am from qualifying for that!

Ran 11k yesterday with the hubby in just under 54 minutes.  I know it's not lightning fast but it is fast for me.  I was breathing and working hard the whole run - my hubby asked me halfway through if I was feeling OK LOL.

Oldest son came home from school sick today...there is so much going around, hope we can all avoid it as much as possible!

    Hello everyone,

I forgot to say congratulations to Autiemom on your race...

THe weather here in Vegas has been great for runs, only problem I have gotten two runs in this las week. Last Monday I ran 4 miles unable to find a groove and my legs went dead. I think it was my fueling, because I did something totally different. Then I had a sinus infection all of last week and couldn't breathe.  I ran last night 4 miles in the dark my group did 4.5 miles and shaved 6 mins off of my time.

I will be doing the Vegas Marathon on December 6th. Saturday I have a route of 16 miles planned out.  I have decided to skip the Valley of Fire half marathon in favor of a 20 mile run. The weekend in between the 16 and 20 milers I will do 18. I feel this will benefit me more than the half. The Saturday before I will probably only do 10 miles as that is my taper week.

Las Vegas was supposed to be my last race of the season, but I am thinking of doing the Phoenix race not sure which distance yet.

I see we have some new posters welcome aboard.

    Happy running everyone stay safe.

Haven't posted for a few days.  Was home in Illinois visiting family and went bowling on Sun.  House shoes, house ball, sticky shoes ---> faceplant on first shot!Yell.  Still shot 190 but really banged up the knee and tweaked my ankle a bit.  After about 30 mins, it was tough to even walk on.  So, I took a bunch of ibuprofen and laid off for 4 days.  Did my first run since Sunday today but I didn't push too far. The knee is OK - 3.5 miles in 30:30 plus 1/2 mile cool down.

EricJacquie and MarkRTC - congrats on the maras.  Good job to both!  Mark, I really enjoyed watching the video of you and the kids crossing the finish line.  Looks like a lot of fun for all and a good lesson for the kids too.

Went down to the gym before work this morning and did half an hour on the stationary bike, 20 minutes on the stairmaster and a bit of time doing some strength training on the legs. I was really laying on the speed on the bike and 80 floors is a lot to climb when you don't actually get anywhere. Legs feel a bit tired this evening.

Rogerbum - way to fight through the injury! Rental equipment is always a bit dodgy whatever sport you choose. 190 is a pretty good score as I recall.

Hey shader - welcome on board.  tranquil - I can only echo others and tell you to hang in there.

soaringeagle - are you skipping the half to get your mileage up or are there other reasons?

I'm still coming back with an easy 6k yesterday and again today.  Have our monthly 8k time trial tomorrow which I plan on taking pretty easy.

Quick run this morning after dropping the kids off at school - my oldest feels much better today, YAY!  Ended up being 9.8k in just under 50 minutes.  Off to an Autism Ontario conference for the next 2 days so will try to get a treadmill run at the hotel probably tomorrow, boo...

Good luck to you exk1w1 tomorrow and anyone else racing this weekend.

Easy 6 for me today.  I planned on 10 for an even 50 for the week but came down with a minor (so far, knock on wood) cold.  Going to take the weekend off and take next week a little easier.

Ran an easy 4 miler with dog in the park. Pace was about 8:15 ish.

Got to sleep in until 7:30 this morning. Man that felt glorious. Out a couple of hours later for a nice, late morning run. It was 60F and sunny with winds from  the west at 17-25 mph. Beautiful fall day. Run was a bit harder than anticipated. 3.22 miles in 29:40 for a 9:13 pace. HR avg of 152, cadence of 83 and Polar RI of 46.

Fostever - congrats on getting into Boston! Good luck with the training and background investigation.

fostever - Boston should be awesome!

8k Time Trial - 34:58.  Better than I was expecting this month after a relatively slow recovery from last month's marathon.  Beautiful conditions for running this morning.  So good in fact, I took the dogs out for an easy jaunt around the local park as soon as I got home.

Absolutely perfect day for a run.  20 miles in 3 hrs 6 minutes  (just over 9min/mile).  My legs felt it from mile 10 on for whatever reason but everything else was positive for the run.

boyjame your marathon must be coming soon, aye! Nice 20.

Exk1w1 great time trial. I may be doing an 8K turkey trot, last year was 34:33. Hoping to break 34 this year.

Ran a pace run today to get ready for a Turkey Trot or CC run if I can find one close. Anyway, 5miles@ 7:23 pace. Felt lousy the first couple miles and decided to just stick it out. I guess messing with this new lawnmower I found in the alley that turned into a project of transfering old parts to the new one took it out of me. Whew! glad it's over and I can relax a little. Gonna watch a tape delayed DVR of Ohio State vs Penn St. football. Don't anyone tell me who won.lol

    Boyjame, nice long run...

Ran just over 5k on the hotel treadmill this morning (it was in miles and I was guessing at the distance) in just over 27 minutes.  It was hot in that fitness room and it was early for me - 6am.  Conference was long but great.  Last night, I actually got to go shopping and watch a movie without kids...what a treat!

Back home now and getting ready to watch the Raptors...

Got out for an early afternoon trot today.  (My earlier post was actually yesterday's runs.)  Temperature getting up there (29.8C as I finished [85F]) so I just went out to run a relaxed but consistent effort.  Heart rate climbed as the run went on, not surprisingly but still felt fine.  42 something minutes.

boyjame - yeah that is a nice 20 miler.  Must feel good getting those longer ones done.

My feet are still recovering from the marathon, I have being icing, and doing the stretch exercises.  I will be unable to run, until the pain in my heel stops. I don't know how long it is going to take but I want to make certain that I return to running with no pain.  For now, I'm focusing on losing more weight, improving on my stretches and just try to take care of the feet.

I will read the postings daily as usual to keep motivated, but no posting from me until after my first come back run.

    Happy running everyone.

Hi Guys, been away for a while, was running last week but never made it on to post. This week I took most of the week off as I have been fighting some sort of lurgy and before it turned into anything more serious I thought it best not to stress my body any more and let it recover fully so that I was 100% for the 24 week marathon training programme.

The marathon traIning started today (hurrah) with an easy 30 mins run. I purposely took it extremely easy, a nice flat route, good short gait and quick turnover, easy 3/3 breathing however when I got to the end of the 3miler (and at my calculated 9:59 pace that should have been almost spot on) my watch said 25 mins! So I extended the route another block and having just logged it now my pace comes out at 8:48 a whole minute per mile faster than I was aiming for. Dang it. I need to get the hang of this pacing thing.

    Get better soon Jacquie

The weather has turned warm in Melbourne. For those guys who ran the marathon last month in a friendly 15 degrees, if it had been yesterday a month later it was 23 degrees at start time and probably over 30 by finish.

Our running club decided to honour one of our legends who won the 3 mile and 6 mile championships of Australia in the late 1950s. We ran a three mile and a six mile event at the local track. Unfortunately the weather gods got involved and it was over thirty degrees. Made it very hot and sticky for all involved. I did the six mile with a couple of other crazies. Finished in 45.11 so 7.37 / mile but couldn't really go hard in the heat.

Followed up Sunday morning up in the hills. Much cooler and a pleasant 45 minutes on the walking trails. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Saturday I ran outside for the first time since I had to stop due to knee pain back in mid Sept. I went to the gym and did chest and back strength for about 30 minutes, then headed outside. Ran 3 miles and it felt great! Super nice weather.I walked for a minute after each mile. Pretty slow time but it was wonderful to be out there running again - and with no knee pain the entire time!

I still don't have much of a plan for the next few months. Just trying to get to the gym 2-3 times a week and run 1-2 times a week.

All the spring races I look at end up conflicting with some family obligation or another. I might end up with a 10K in April, 1/2M in July and hopefully full marathon next fall. Might do a 5K with my son on Thanksgiving weekend if my runs go well the next couple weeks.

    Heal up Jacquie!

So exciting to be starting a new training session LexB!

LexB - good luck with the training! Exciting stuff! I would love to run London one day......

Well - I've ordered a Garmin 305 from the UK (they are cheap at the moment, pluss the pound is at an all time low against the norwegian kroner.....plus I LIKE buying techno stuff......). I'm looking forward to using this "shadow runner" function where you can run against yourself along routes you have done before.... this is part of my sub 1.30 half marathon quest for 2010......

Been running twice in the last 2 weeks....coughing like a pack-a-day man....

ericjacquie your pinnacle marathon event is over, good job, now you've earned a good rest so take as long as you need to and even cross train to ease back into running. Recovery can take a while.

stripe34 cool a OSU, Michigan run. I read about some college runners from Ohio State and Michigan who do a relay from Columbus to Ann Arbor with the game ball. The Michigan students take over around half way. GO BUCKs!! pound Iowa and then Michigan.

Mtw59 good to hear you're back at it.

Did a 30 mile bike ride on the lakefront yesterday in Indian summer weather(70F.) Hey Aussies down under. We have been kind of chilly so that warmth sounds kind of pleasing to us Yanks up here in the northern hemisphere.

I'd like to work up to a half marathon next summer (June here in NY State).  Currently just starting to use Mapmyrun etc for serious training documentation.  I've run a 5K, and could probably do a 10K.  Anyone have a good training resource to get from my level... (i wouldnt say beginner, but I'm no marathoner - yet!) to a Half?  Happy running to all, and to those across the globe, enjoy that weather... I did one last week in sleeting downpour.  :(  BOO!

LexB - If you're able to maintain that pace and 3/3 breathing, it doesn't seem like you could be going way too fast.  Maybe you're in better shape than you realize.

MTW59 - Very glad to hear you're running pain free now!

Fostever - got my confirmation recently too.  I guess I was thinking of the bib # assignments.  The first time I ran it I didn't feel comfortable that I was really entered until I had a number assigned.  I guess I was being paranoid.  Hope we both stay uninjured and maybe I'll see you there!

Hey everyone just a little frustrated today, but will get that in a minute. Yell

To answer ex-k1w1   question  yes to both.

Saturday I did a 14 miler consisting of up and downhills outside of Red Rock Canyon. What a beautiful day for a run.  My husband went with me for support, marking off the miles and taking notes on how I felt.  I was two miles short of 16, but I ran all of the hills. That is the first time I have done that.

I just found out today that for the Vegas Marathon the only day I can have off is Sunday race day.   Since I started running in events ,The day before I have become very structured in my routine from the time I get up until I go to bed to include my fueling throughout the day. I also remember how I felt the day after my first half I couldn't move hardly and if I did it was slow and painful.  So I am hoping Monday that I can move.

To give a little background on my job, I am a loss prevention officer for a major retail chain and from the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) until the day after Christmas there is no time off all paid time has to be used. I am requesting that my  regular days off be changed which "nobody especially in our department can have the weekends of."

Thanks for letting me vent if someone can help me understand why I am unable to switch days please do.

THe question I have is if you have a  are schedule to work the day before a race how do you prepare?  I have come to realize people who don't participate in the events are unaware of the dedication and preparation that goes into something like this.

Now I feel better getting it off my chest.

    Happy running everyone..... Stay safe.

Went to they gym before work today and did an hour on the stationary bike and 20 minutes on the stair climber. Really pushed it on the bike, avg HR of 157 with a max of 179. Avg power output of 163 watts for the entire hour. The 20 minutes on the stairmaster wasn't exactly easy either. Completely soaked after the workout and will probably be a bit sore later on today.

    leannemh - welcome aboard!

Soaringeagle40 - Most races that I run are on Saturday's and I work Mon-Fri, so I am usually working the day before a race. I've only done one marathon and that was so long ago that I have no recollection of how I prepared before the race. For the half-marathons that are my longest races now, I don't do anything really special the day before. I taper for about a week before and try to up my carbohydrate intake slightly for the few days before. Other than that, I really don't do anything different than I would any other day. I do try and get to sleep earlier than normal, but often that does not really work and I lie in bed awake and hyped. Having said all that, if you have a ritual that you are used to that works for you, it is a bummer that you won't be able to get the day off to follow through. Good luck regardless.

Fostever - Thanks for the info.  I wish I had a pace like that!  the best I've done so far is around a 9 min.  Still a beginner, but I have high hopes.  I was never a runner in highschool or anything, (played soccer though) so I'm not sure if I have it "in me" or not.  haha.  Either way, I like it, and I'd rather be running 20 miles at 9min pace than not running at all.

Soaringeagle. - i feel your pain!  I used to work at a home improvement retailer... it rhymes with Moes... haha.  Had the same scheduling issues.  And black friday was always a "no no" for days off.  Worst case, you could call in "sick" and have the day after the race off right?  Then again, I'm not a marathoner, but for me, after I run a longer run, the day after I feel better if I get out and walk around a little... seems to loosen me up.  Good luck either way!

rpetr- Do you find that your cross training helps your running alot? Last year I got reeally into spinning classes, and after about a month of spinning ONLY, (no running) I got off the bike and onto a treadmill and ran the farthest and fastest i ever had.  Seemed to do wonders for me aerobically...    :)  Stair climber!!  Good for you!  I avoid those like the (swine flu) plague.  haha.

5 miles last night on the TM at the gym - 40 minutes.  Light workout after.  No ill effects whatsoever from Saturday's LR.  I have three weeks until my marathon (that is if someone drops out) and I really wanted to get in a 22 mile LR.  I feel like I can do it this weekend (2 weeks out from the race).  I know most training plans talk about 3 wks of tapering.  But I am quick to recover (so far).  I feel like I can do 22 this weekend and then a faster 15 mile run the weekend before the marathon.  Any thoughts from marathon vets? Has anyone run their longest LR two weeks prior? Just wondering.  In the end, I may not be able to carve 3-3.5 hours out again (wife gives me the "look" when I tell her I am doing a LR.)

4 miles today, did a route with a pretty bitchin' hill in the middle of it, and tried to run super slow. Focused on 3/3 breathing (except when recovering from the hill which was 3/2) and kept a 9:13 pace which I think is about as slow as I can go. Not bad though, wasn't too miserable (the weather was though).

Boyjame you should try getting 'the look' from the dog, she's not supposed to run right now but she's not happy about it.

    Hey guys.

Well I went for my first run since I sprained my ankle during my event on the 19th Sept!!!!

To cut a short story shorter... Didn't let it heal properly and played hockey stupidly too soon in mid October. Had first physio session last wed, told me stretches to do and to get running not hockey training so...

did 3.4 miles. wasn't keeping track of time but it was just a just a jog.

Everything felt really good until the very end when it was getting a bit stiff and the inside arch was feeling sore. Physio says I overpronate largely when standing on the injured leg. not sure if this has always been the case or will go away will the healing. Got another session on friday so I will have plenty of questions.

Hope everyone is ok, honestly soo busy with university its unbelievable (I hate final year) but will catch up on last few threads in next few days. Hello to any newcomers!!! x

Did a quick one last night (1.85m) cause I wanted to go home and do some lifting.  It was a little chilly (frost on the ground last night) but I felt ok.  I can always tell when I havent eaten enough for the day, cause about half way through I start getting tired...  Darn you carbs!  Anywho.

LexB ....  I can related to the "look".  I dont really like running with my dog, (shes a boxer) because she so flipping excited that she just darts around, however, since I live alone, and she needs exercise, its either go running twice, once with her, just to run her, and once by myself for real training, or i just suck it up and deal with having to stop for "pit stops" ever mile or so.  haha.  Its a bad day when I really decide I dont want her along, because she stands there watching me put on my running wear, Heart Rate Monitor, Shoes... etc, all the while looking like, "oh god, please tell me she's going to put on my leash... please please please mom... dont leave me here".   Then when I'm leaving she stands there looking at me like, "you forgot me!!!"  so pitiful.  Anyhow, now you see why I run with my dog.  And add 2 minutes per mile.  haha.  oh well.

Rickymcm - good luck with physio...  it sucks to have to wait to run, but it will be worth it!!!

    happy running!

Run along canal before work. Brisk 40F with a north wind made for a chilly out-bound run. Much better on the way back in. HR avg of 145, cadence avg of 84 and Polar RI of 50. The finish of the run was along the river and as I was colling off I looked over to see a great blue heron preening himself on top of an old structure of some sort at the edge of the river. Kinda cool for downtown Indy.

Leannemh - I do find the cross training helps me particularly with the cardio. I got a new bicycle and got back into cycling after about 15+ years back around Labor Day 2007. I had hurt my knee earlier that summer and hadn't run since July. Late October of that year I ran a 5K and with the cycling I had been doing (500 miles in a month) and 3 runs, I ran one of the best 5K races I've ever done and ended up placing 3rd in my age group. It also helps keep me healthy. I did my best half-marathon in years this past spring because I didn't lose any training time due to injury. I attribute that to the cross training as well.

Awesome run today - LSR my longest one yet - 7.71 miles in about 1:20 for a 10:19 pace. Took everyones' advice and was careful to run into the wind for the start of the blocks, had a very strong tailwind for the last couple of miles that really helped (despite the ponytail that kept slapping me in the face).

that 10:19 pace was at avg hr 155, so perfect for me (my max is 190-ish). So happy with the progress - that is faster than my race pace at the beginning of this summer, and I'm sure my HR during those was in the 180s. Looking forward to that OSU/MI 5k and also the Buffalo/Niagara 8k.

Ran an recovery run with the dog along. 5 miles @ around 8:30 pace. She used to beg me to go, now she just looks at me like: "go ahead you fool." "Where's the kitty" gets her going though.

leannemh-welcome to the thread. you sound like you have a good aerobic base so you should improve your times quickly. The only advice I would give you is not to go too hard too early. A slow increase of 10-15% in your mileage per week will build strength and should allow your body to adapt. You will find from all of us that the temptation to overtrain leads to injuries that take you away from the joy of running. Cross training is a great tool.

Boyjame- Running folklore puts recovery time as the number of days to recover equals the number of miles you run. So if you are looking at 22 miles, two weeks is not enough time to recover but that is based on racing, not a long slow run.  I think, for me, I would be more worried about the faster 15 miles the week before. I would suggest dragging that back to 10 miles and running it at a bright sustainable pace. Kind of the pace you would like to run the marathon at. You should feel comfortable and ready to continue when you stop. Do stop. That is the start of your taper. Be keen at the start of the marathon, not tired.

boyjame - I'm with jeffwright and I wouldn't be looking at any more than about 15 miles 2 weeks out, and no more than about 90mins jogging 1 week out.

mtw - great to hear you're back into it with no pain.  ericjacquie - take your time; you've earned it.

leannemh - hey, welcome to the thread.  Again, what jeffwright said goes for me.

SimmoT - there's an 8k time trial at the Tan Track at 7:30am on New Year's Eve.  Or, if you feel a bit more adventurous, there's a 28k / 56k trail ultra which I was planning to run on Jan 3rd down Mornington Peninsula way.  I've piked out of the 56k after my less than perfect marathon but I may still do the 28.  I can do some more hunting and send links if you want.

Got in a fairly easy and short 5k run Wednesday but having been very consistent in my exercises.  Will run tomorrow - promise!

hi all, welcome to leannemh and anyone else new. Congrats to everyone that has raced since I last posted - particularly autiemom, ericjacquie and mark - have been keeping up with the posts and was most impressed with your races!

Haven't posted for awhile as going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment. Short 4km for me today with the dogs - they were actually well behaved today and ran behind me most of the way - I think the are starting to understand "slow" means "run at Mums pace not your own"! Its only taken a year of trying!

I was off of excercise from Thurs last week until yesterday AM.  I ran last Thurs and felt fine initially but later realized I had pulled a glut while running.  It hurt like heck and is essentially the same injury as I had last time this year (also a few weeks prior to my Seattle Marathon Half marathon).  Probably was the result of favoring the knee I injured on Halloween weekend (it's like my mother always said, "Roseanna, Rosanna-Danna - if it's not one thing, it's another).  So I took off several more days to let this get a little better and did a 15 mile bike ride yesterday.  The bike rides don't seem to bother either the knee or the glut so I will stick to them for awhile.

I've started building back mileage this week after a light month+.  Did a slow 5.75 miles on the treadmill on Saturday (10:20 pace) and a faster 5.25 miles (9:20 pace) on Sunday.

Monday I did 5k on the treadmill 10:10 pace.

    Tuesday off.

Yesterday I did 4 miles on the TM, 10:10 pace.

4.25 miles at easy pace today (9:07 pace so a little faster than I was aiming) with a couple of smaller hills thrown in. It was Sprocket's first run in 2 weeks, she started to get a bit frisky and restless on the slow walks, so we decided it would be better for her to go for a slow run with me where she's focused on running rather than walk and end up chasing squirrels. She seemed great and really seemed to enjoy running again - so no more evil or hurt looks because I am leaving her behind (for now anyway).

We had a crazy hail/sleet storm yesterday so we were running on snow in some parts of the route today. Crazy!

LexB - running in snow eh? I'm contemplating how much I will run once the snow starts falling this winter.  I suppose as long as I can endure the cold, running in snow should be fine (except for slick spots).

Jeffwright, Exk1w1 - points well taken.  I'm still not sure what I will do this weekend.  It does make sense about peeling back the 15 miler to a 10 and at race pace.

7 miles this morning at race pace (or at least what I hope is race pace) - 1 hr (8:30/mi).  Still struggle to keep pace in morning runs.  I wonder for all who run in the am - how much time do you take between the time you get up in the morning and when you get out to run? How much do you fuel in the morning before runs?

Received great news this week.  I am "officially" in the North Central Trail Marathon (11/28/09) after being put on the wait list.  WooHoo! (my wife wasn't so excited - but with baby #3 on the way in 2010, I think this may be the last longer race I run a while).

boyjame, I have get-a-grips traction aids which are ace for running on snow and ice - even patchy stuff. I love 'em.
