    Got in another 28 mile bike ride this morning. Felt pretty good. I think the biking is helping with my knee, building up the quads. Won't really know until I start increasing my running miles more. Planning on running three days next week and upping my mileage slightly, we'll see how it goes.

    Got in an 8 mile long run today, 8:50 per mile. I was able to knock off a few minutes of last weeks time. Tomorrow starts my 18 week train up for my marathon

    Here goes -couple of comments, then report on the half to follow.

    1 - Why do you have pacing groups at a race when a) you can t find them until the race starts, and b) they are all positioned within 5 metres of each other at the starting line.

    2- Why didnt Melbourne's founders find a flat spot to set up camp.

    That race was a killer. I couldnt find the pacing group I wanted to hang with, so basically ran at my own pace for all of it. Passed the 1.45 group after  3 kms, the 1.40 after 6km, but was keeping a fairly consistent 4.28 pace for the first 15 kms, the last 6 were a bit slower than that but with a final kick finished in 1.34.57. Outside my ridiculous goal, but inside my realistic goal. I enjoyed the flat part of the course but wasnt real keen on the other 19kms!!! It just seemed to be a succession of long steep hills, so I am rapt with that time. Beat my personal best for the half by 11 mins (have only done 1 previous). And a great winty Melbourne day. Drizzle with a constant wind. Luvvly!!!

    Harro - is it Paul Harrison - sorry if I have blown your cover. Spoke to the guy at Sporting SPirit and that was the only name he could come up with. He said 1.51 which is terrific. Did you find it as hard as I did. Hope it just wasnt me!!!

    Interested to see Dan's time later this evening, and anybody else with races on. Might be an easy week this week, but will soon return full speed ahead for Oct 12

    Yep thats me 1.51.26 for the half. Sorry I missed you!

    There were plenty of narrow straights filled by thousands - surprised people didnt end up in the river! Shocking course - didnt like it at all. All these small steep hills one after another. (after puff and billy these hills didnt seem too bad to me)

    This was a really good run for me given I am carrying a terrible headcold and was up half the night not able to sleep. The time equals my only other attempt at the half which was a month ago on a totally flat course at Williamstown. So I figure thats a major improvement.

    The best bit for me is I felt crap all the way until 9km mark where I just seemed to find a reasonable rhythm and before I knew it there was 2 km to go. I upped the pace up to Peter Mac Hospital and then sprinted the rest overtaking at least 30 people. I felt really strong and I was pumped!!! Although very wet!!

    Cant wait for fartlek training on Tuesday morning!!

    I agree that the course sucked! It was a shocking start - all squished in. But I was pleased to shave 7 or so mins off my last effort.

    Back to the grind stone of marathon training after a rest day tomorrow. Melbourne Marathon - here I come.

    I think we had a few do the half today at Melbourne. It was certainly not the course to do a fast time. Unbeleivably hilly and so many tight corners. Very hard to maintain rhythym. I was amazed at the consistency of my km splits considering the changes in momentum all throughout.

    Fricster - have you done the Melb mara before. That is slightly flatter than today!!!

    Harro - Felt very releived to get to the back of parliament house. It was the start of my speed increase, and then a good kick right at the end. You did well considering an illness. Great stuff

    Yea and as fricster said now its back to the melb marathon grind. I think my next thing will be the Sandy point half to check how my time is progressing for the marathon. Got my txt message - I came 1142 not sure out of how many that is. Was hard to pass for a lot of it though.

    thats awesome that so many of you ran the same race, its great to see you guys were all at least somewhat pleased with your efforts

    I raced a 5k yesterday, I'm not going to put my time because its embarrassing for me. Lets just say I ran it at a pace slower than what I did tempo runs in this past season. I have no idea what happened, I just felt really flat. Bad day, so I'll be forgetting about that one soon :)

    17 mile long run today, so that was good times...I'm starting to feel kind of lazy though, almost like I don't wanna go out and run as much. Maybe I'm getting overtrained, I dunno

    Great job everyone with completing the 1/2. 

    Just finished 12 1/4 miles at an 8:30 pace.  It felt good, but I'm extremely tired right now.  Yesterday was a hike day with the dogs.  Nothing like 1.9 miles of hiking a 2163ft ascent in just over an hour; then run 12+miles at an 8 1/2 min pace the next day. 

    So glad tomorrow is a day off.

    No running this week-end for me.  Volunteered at the Achilles Hope and Possiblities 5 miles race this morning.  Being physically challenged did not stop them one bit. Tears came to my eyes seeing the children with the missing limbs running.

    3 miles today...1 short of my training plan, but I don't think that should be an issue for my first week of training. It was my fastest 3 miles yet, 20:08 (6:43 per mile). I wish this had been a 5k race day. :)

    gfinkelde, fricster, and harro, well done on your 1/2's. I have mine coming up this coming Saturday (I think I said earlier that it was this past Saturday), so I'm getting pretty excited. KDogg, I'm constantly amazed and inspired by your training! Unfortunately, I work 12 hour shifts and commute an hour every day, so my schedule will never allow that sort of training, even if I ever became masochistic enough to  force it on myself. I guess that's part of the reason you can run so fast and far!

     I've finally managed to break the 14-mile mark without walking. Ran about 14.2 miles late Thursday night/early Friday morning (it took me 2:47:00, though). I planned on running a slow, easy 8 miles, then decided, since I was feeling good, I would push past 14. The last two miles were pretty slow, though. At least I'm past it. I also put in a  5k recovery run late Saturday night (31:39). My runs for this week are going to all be pretty easy, as I have my half Saturday. Wish me luck, and I'll keep you all updated. Keep running.

    ran a personal best in my 8 mile run.  came in at a hair over 9 minute miles,  which,  for me is right where i run most races...can't wait to get out tomorrow for an easy 5 miel,  and for the nyc half next month. if anyone is coming to town for the half,  or is in town and is running, maybe we can put together a pasta dinner or something the night before....

    Did a normal 6 miles at 7:00 minutes a mile...then went for a 24 mile bike ride.  The run didnt feel god at all, i guess since ive been doing more working out then running in the past 3 weeks,after spring track ended i just felt the need to slack off, cross country will knock me back into shape and get me motivated again.

    just got back into town this afternoon. Was up in Chicago for the Highland Games & Scottish Festival on Saturday. It was a beautiful day and I got my 8 mile run in before heading to the festival. The farthest I've ever run is 5 miles so I feel pretty damn good about completing 8 miles!! My time was 1:52 :) Then we spent the entire rest of the day walking around the OakBrook Polo Grounds - my feet were killing me by mid afternoon. Tomorrow starts another week of work, class and training. Happy running everyone!

    Those of you from Melbourne - Nice work on the half - sounded like heavy going.

    I did a 21km/13miler yesterday as my long run. Nice and slow (a bit under 6min/km - my planned "marathon pace" is 5min/km). The program I am following has a longish marathon pace run on the Saturday and long run on the sunday. I'll need to do some fartlek soon, if nothing else to feel the sensation of running fast for a change.

    Finally found a hotel near the Berlin marathon course that wasn't booked out.... Makes it harder to find decent accom. when you are travelling with two one year olds..... (and a wife of course) But I'm glad they will be there to cheer me on :)....  

     aldiara88 You are just going from strength to strength. I'm impressed....you're like the new LexB of the forum..hehehe 

     Kdogg: I get burnt out just reading your posts. What are your goals for your marathon debut?

    Kdogg in my humble opinion I would say you definitely are training a lot and it would only be natural to feel a bit stale or burnt out. I am nowhere near your amazing regime but I know I have felt this way at times.

    Things that have worked to get me out of it are finding someone to run with and not worrying about time just talking as you run. Or backing off the running and doing some other stuff like bike or team sports where you can still apply your fitness. Or a couple of days break might not hurt either. Important to keep the fire in the belly burning but hard to sustain it all the time.

    Reaffirm your goals and try not to place too much pressure on yourself. Look how far you've come!

    Hi all, Gfinkelde, Harro - we all sound well pleased with our efforts. This was just my second 1/2. although I have run a 20, and 24 training run so far this year.

     I didn't mind the hills on Sunday - after the 1st lap of the course - i mentally prepared for the final ascent on the second lap - and walked through the aid stops each time taking 30 seconds to drink, and regroup. It really helped at the end hill behind treasury buildings - and enabled me to pass a few runners.

     On the first lap - catching sight of naked running guy at the 13km mark was pretty funny - and kept my mind off the hill!!

    like Harro - the first half was a shocker rythym wise; so at the endura aid station I stopped drank the full cup, had a Gu and headed off again - with a spring in my step!!

    I will make my marathon debut at the Melbourne this year. I am pretty nervous/excited at the challenge ahead of me.

    I have pulled up with quite sore achilles today, and will take another day off tomorrow as they feel really tender.

    This is a great thread for the motivation and encouragement - I look forward to checking in with you in the buid up to october.

    Today was crosstraining day. I did about 20 minutes of weight training for the legs, and 30 minutes on the stair master. I'm hoping to use my cross training day to work on quads...the ridge to bridge marathon has some serious downhill to it, and I hear it's hard on the quads, so I'm hoping this workout helps.

    GREAT JOB on all of you who did the Melbourne half!!!  I did the Fairfield Half yesterday at a time of 2:20:12...I was really proud of myself!  I didn't walk any of it, despite some sick hills...I put the complete update under "Race Advice for Newbies" thread.  Not bad, especially considering I only started running 3 months ago!  : )

    Great job to all who competed this weekend. Sounds like everyone did well for themselves. Burgalurg - your accoutn of your experience was great reading. Good job breaking your goal and keeping the contents of your stomach where they belong.

    Got in a 3.4 mile run before going back to work this morning. Didn't get enough sleep last night and felt tired, but I ended up doing the run about a minute faster than on Friday. Go figure.

    Yesterday was my "off" day, a 6 mile run at probably 7:20 ish pace with the girlfriend. She kept trying to push the pace but i wouldnt let her ;) and she's always saying how she has gotten so slow and that she can "only" run a 19min 5k.

    Right now i'm about to head out for a 9 miler and i'm not really looking foreward to it. I've been on a roof all day, and even though it was cooler today it was still 95 and it will drain you of energy quick.

    I ran my medium long run this morning because they were doing road construction on my loop and I got detoured for another couple miles, so I just went ahead and got the 15m in. Then I doubled back for another 5m tonight.

    SimmoT - I dunno for sure what my actual time goals for my debut are. I know for sure I want to break 2:30 (~5:45 pace). So for right now, anything faster than 2:30 will be considered a victory. Anything slower will have to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, haha...we'll see how that changes as my training comes along

    Burgalurg - terrific report of a terrific run. As inspiring as Kdogg, who runs 2 of these a day!!! And breakfast was only enjoyed once which is alwaysa good thing. Thanks for everybodys "pats on the backs". Us Melbourne boys have reason to be happy with our efforts. Now roll on the Full in october.

    Today was a very, very slow run. That is all to report. If I ran that fast up some of the hills on Sunday I would have gone backwards. Ride home was my PB though. I love gale force North westerlys!!!

    5.2 miles today, 8:09 per mile. I tried running my planned pace today...I think I did pretty well. Kdogg has a great goal. I'm shooting for a 3:30 marathon, but will be happy with anything under 4 hours. If I can squeeze out just a little more, a 3:20 would be cool...it'd qualify me for the Boston.

    My first entry in the training summary. I am training for my first marathon (Hartford, CT on Oct. 11th). I ran the half in Hartford last year and finished under 2 hours. My primary goal is to just finish the full marathon, with a secondary goal of finishing under 4 hours. I am following Hal Higdon's Intermediate II training schedule I got online. So far, so good . . . no injuries!

    I got up at 5am and ran 7 miles today in 58 minutes, which was pushing it for me, but I felt good. I usually run at a 9 min/mile pace. I stopped to sip gatorade and stretch for a minute or so at mile four. What was really cool is that a deer stepped out in the road about 100 yards in front of me at about mile 1, we stared at each other and then she moved on. Too bad, it would have been nice to have had a running partner for a mile or two. I wonder what her pace per mile would have been?

    Second day back at work after a weeks vacation. Only today I was actually in a training class. We got done early so I went out and did a 43 mile bike ride. Tomorrow morning it's back out on the road running before a second day of class.

    Hey folks... took a bit of a light week last week, had 3 days off to help me rest up a bit as I was in constant discomfort for a while and the end of fridays run was horrible. Plus I've been working a lot and those 14 hour days are bit tiring! Was back out with the running club tonight for a track work out, 200-400-600-800-600-400-200 with drills in between. I was very happy with my performance. Holding my own at the front of the group until the last two when I had obviously been running a little bit harder than I should have (we were supposed to be at about 75%). Alas I did not record my times, d'oh! I just can't get into pressing the start chrono button on my watch, I always forget in my enthusiasm to get going. I must have been running an 8.5 pace i think. It felt great tho, I really enjoyed it. Beautiful weather right now. I might squeeze a little 5k trail run in tomorrow. Oh yeah and I got my second stripe at kickboxing. wahoo. 2 more and I am grading for my high orange. Hurrah. My shoulder is much better too - being careful with it, no weights yet, I might start a bit of gentle yoga tho.

    10m/7m double today...I'm supposed to do a tempo tomorrow, but I'm up way later than normal so I think I am gonna delay my LT work until next week (or at least only do one tempo this week rather than two)

    After tomorrow I'm done with doubles for the week...yay

    remberley: Welcome. I'm following the same program actually. Running Berlin 28th of september. so we are probably a week or so apart on the program. I'm on week 5 at the moment - so far so good! Takes a bit of discipline to run those long runs nice and slow....I probably have similiar goals to you.

    2 great runs in a row. i realized over the weekend that i was not oushing myself enough.  My last 2 days have proved it.  on sunday i ran my 8 mile at a 9 min pace,  and then realized that i was running my 5 miler's at a 100 min pace. so,  i realized i was taking it too easy on my shorter runs,  so i have pushed the pace a little. yesterday ran 910, today 850. i have a goal to break 2 hours in the half marathon next month,  my first,  so i have to keep at it. stay healthy everyone

    SimmonT and Junkie99 thanks for the welcome. I am on week 5 of Higdon's intermediate II. I built a base of miles starting back in March and started the Higdon plan the last week of May. I have motified it just a bit. I do my long run on Saturday and take a rest day on Sunday and Thursday. So I am not really doing any cross training, but I do try to do alot of stretching whenever I have a chance. On the other hand my normal schedule during the day includes walking and yard work including stacking/cutting wood for the winter (heating oil is $4.51!!), and playing b-ball with my sons . . . so that all is "unplanned" cross training. I wonder if I should be doing some weight training . . . even just push ups and crunches.  What do you think?

    Anyway, ran 3 easy miles today. A bit tight from yesterday's hard 7 mile run. Finished the 3 in 25 minutes. Saw a turkey hen with her chicks, so two wildlife sightings in as many days.

    I am actually looking forward to my 14 mile long run this week. SimmonT, I too have a hard time doing the long runs 60-90 sec slower per mile . . . but maybe as the runs get longer this will not be a problem. I am usually pretty consistent at about 9:30-9:45 per mile. My goal is to run the marathon at a 9 min/mile pace.

    Didn't get much sleep last night so I bagged running in the morning. Finished training early again today, but my wife had yard work for me to do. After 1.5 hours of "unplanned" cross-training (thanks Remberly), I went out for a 3.48 mile run in 32:20 at about 7:30. Still over 80 at that time, so I feel that I did the run at a pretty good pace all things considered.

    I didn't double today, I wanted to sleep an extra hour to help recover from yesterday. A seven mile second run wears you down, I dunno how Brian Sell and those guys do it...every day

    12m today, it was probably the worst training run I've had in a long time. I trained later in the day and it was like 92 degrees out and humid and my legs felt like junk almost the whole time. The next couple of days should be relatively easy though. I'm making my debut in the open 400 tomorrow at an all comers track meet. Maybe chiggy will get a laugh at this, because my time is probably going to be slower than his average pace in a 1500

    Awesome run tonight, 7.6miler loved it. Was a bit worried about doing my long run the day after a hard track work out with the run club but I have had to pick up an extra shift tomorrow which screwed up all my work out plans.

    As it happened, it rocked, 1hr09mins (9 min/mile pace) which is probably a bit too fast for my 'easy' long run... but at least I know I can do it! Plus I really enjoyed it, had a lovely run.

    Had one of those rare runs last night where I just felt great the entire time. Ended up as a kind of tempo run 13km at  a bit under 4.40/km (7.30/mile).
    remberley : Cross training is probably something I should do more of. Apart from one session of yoga per week (which is sensational for stretching everything out after a long run), and a couple of very short bike rides to work I haven't really done much. I should probably do sit ups etc. By the way - have you ever thought of changing your internet name to fasterpastor? I reckon that would be a much cooler name....we should put it to a vote!!! :)

    My running coach is actually a triathlon coach, and I take the running sessions. As we are out of season here, it is usually just me or another guy doing the session. Rocked up a couple of minutes late for my session tonight to see my coach unning off in the distance with her telling me to catch up. I thought she was p*ssed off with me for being there late, but I caught up and then she dropped me going up Anderson St, for those who know it. When we finished hammering around at a way too fast a pace given Sundays run she told me how much I ve improved, and how well I am running and I now have the ability to run fast even though I am buggered. Couldnt she have just sent that in an email!!!

    My legs were a bit shattered after that so we did a nice easy 4kms and just chatted about what we have to do coming up. Really psyched that I can now do a fast marathon in October. Real work for the marathon starts Tuesday. Bring it on!!!

    hi All, - Gfinkelde - Cruel and unusual punishment from your coach. no anderson street for me till the weekend!!!!

    Me - a bit of a chicken - too windy so ran on a treadmill for 5kms- nearly died of boredom. I think I have a new rule...

    Achilles still a bit sore after Sunday - but feel better after some good strength training at PT on Wednesday.

    Rest day today (Thurs.), 7 miles tomorrow, and my first 14 miler on Sat. Did I say I was looking forward to that long run, because I am. I am curious to see how I hold up as the long runs get longer.

    I found the reports from those who ran the Melbourne 1/2 and the comments on the hills interesting. When I ran the 1/2 in Hartford, CT last year I found a pleasant surprise. The course was very level. Where I live in southern New Hampshire basically wherever I run there are lots of hills so all my training runs included one or two pretty steep and some long hills.  After all the hilly training, the flat course was much easier and it showed in my finishing time.

    Meyerboy: I know what you mean about wondering if you should be pushing yourself harder. Before I began training for longer races, I had only run 3 to 5 mile courses a couple times a week to stay in shape and for the challenge. And it was all about time. Each day I would push and try to improve my time from the day before. Now I run longer, but at a much slower pace and never finish really out of breath. I think I have been overly cautious that I do not overtrain and I wonder if it would be beneficial to really push at least on one run a week. So that's the new plan. Once a week I am going to "go for time" and run just about as hard as I can.

    rpetreccajr: Glad to give you a new perspective on cross-training . . . and on your wife as your new training coach!

    SimmonT: Your suggestion of my new internet name as "fasterpastor" may give my congregation the wrong idea. Some may think it applies to the length of my sermons and expect me to improve my performance every week by cutting minutes off my time.

    Today's a rest day!!!! I miss the running, but glad for the break.

    Rememberly: Hills are just speed training in disguise. I forget who said that. All my runs have long hills, and short steep hills as well. If you look at Higdons advanced training, there's speed work of sorts there (intervals/hill repeats). I don't think it's a good idea to make the run after the long run a speed run...but other than that you should be able to work a speed day in. I had to modify the plan as well. I don't like the rest day to be the day after the long run. I like a short recovery run after my long run.

    Been averaging about 9 miles a day this week, nothing too interesting. I'm holding off on doing any fartlek or tempo runs till July and my mileage is up a a little higher. The weather has been really nice recently it's only been between 90-95 when i run at about 8pm.

    kdogg have a good time with that open 400! I expect records to be broken.

    So I ran this track meet today, it was kind of sweet. I decided to pull off the "high school meet".

    I ran the 1600, 400, 800, and 3200

    I just wanted to sit and kick for the win in the 1600, because the whole goal of today was to work on my closing speed. Well it turned out some dude who qualified for state in the mile showed up and he has a nasty kick. So I sat for the first 2.5 laps and decided it'd be best to put him away. Splits: 71, 72, 70, 64...I was kind of impressed, I wasn't really trying to run that fast on the last lap, it just happened. Mark up a W in the mile for me!!

    Eight minutes later I ran the 400. These high school kids were looking at me taking off my trainers and put on my spikes and they were all like "oh no he is taking off his shoes, he must be racing" (they actually said that). We started things up and some dude passed me on the first turn (it was a staggered race) and I was like oh crap, I am about to get rolled up. Well, he died a little bit and I kicked him down for the win. My time was a blazing fast 58, lol. None of the studs showed up tonight so that was kinda good, but kinda bad in terms of competition and having people to chase

    Less than a minute after the 400, I ran the 800. I sat on the leader for the first 1.5 laps and then got passed by some dude and realized it was gonna come down to a big kick for the win, so I shut it down (my achilles is kinda messed up). I ran probably 2:40, lol

    Right after that, I ran the 3200 with my friend. She was trying to go pretty fast (11:30 or so). We didn't quite get that, but we did negative split by about 10 seconds on the 2nd mile (6:08, 6:00), which was what we were shooting for. I think that we can do better soon

    KDogg - I am tired now... how do you do it!! Clearly you scared the kids, but sounds like fun as well.

    run today in the cold wind of 6kms. Nice and easy before a fabulous night of Aussie hip Hop!! go TZU

    Ran 7 miles today. Training schedule calls for me to run at my marathon pace so I can get that speed locked in to my psyche. I pretty much nailed my 9 min/mile pace and felt good.

    Tomorrow I run 14 miles. One mile longer than my long run last week, but more importantly, the longest I have ever run in my life. I am supposed to run it about 60-90 sec slower than my goal marathon pace, so my plan is to try for 10 min/mile. That's a 2 hour 20 minute run.
