    Hi,

I'm looking for a road bike like tire for my mountain bike.  I want that road bike tire feel but on my mountain bike.  I COULD use those "slicks" but it seems like they would be very suseptible to flats.  Can anyone tell me a high quality road bike like tire for a mountain bike?

     Thanks,

This will largely depend on if you have a 26 or 29 inch mountain bike.  If you have a 29er you might want to look at putting cyclocross tires on your bike.  If you have a 26 inch bike the slicks actually are very tough normally.

You also need to pay attention to the width of your rims. Narrow tyres need narrow rims.  If you currently have big knobbly tyres, you will need a wider road tyre.

There are lots of versions for both 26" and 29". Many have puncture protection bands which do help.

I've found that mountain bikes are not ideal for road riding.  Don't expect to go as fast as you could on a "proper" road bike.  Also be aware that suspesion forks make road riding feel dull when on tarmac and sap a lot of your energy.  Think about changing to a fixed fork at some time if you have suspension forks.

I have a 26" wheel touring bike that I use for all my commuting(20 miles) try a Schwabe Marathon Plus either 1.35 or 1.75, they are really strong and robust. These have a puncture protection as well. They are not cheap and they have a kevlar beam and inner protection so they are difficult to get on or off. Yes mountain bikes are difficult to ride on roads, they tend to be a lot heavier with the suspension forkes, but lots of cyclist use them around town, you will be a lot quicker if you had a proper road bike.

I use the specialized fat boys, super slick and super tough, but have the LBS put them on, the bead wicked tight, let some one else get the palm burns.

I have some IRC Smoothie tires on my MTB (26") for about the last 700 miles.  These tires are reasonable inexpensive, smooth, fairly narrow (1.25") and light, and run at a decent pressure (~95 psi).   I don't recall getting any flats in these tires during the time I have ridden them, and they haven't worn noticeably yet.  Compared to riding knobby tires at the same effort, I can ride about 1-2 mph faster with these tires.

That said, I recently started riding a road bike, and it's much more efficient than the MTB, even equipped with smooth tires.
