If you are running outside, when is it the best time to run? In the morning, afternoon or evening? I've heard that you aren't really supposed to run much in the morning, but I don't really know. Any advice?

maybe it's a climate/season-based ting?  i hate running early-doors (morning) in winter, my tendons/muscles are pretty stiff.

afternoon's a no-go as i work during the week and consequently get nocturnal during the w/e's.

evening's probs your best bet as you're hydrated to the max and your body-temp is at it's peak (apparently that's good).

all that said, it's ultimately personal preference. hope you find your idyllic time to run dude Smile

Really I dont think it matters. I have had great workouts and pr's at every time of day imaginable. I do think it helps if you try to run around the same time everyday. If you run in the mornings I would make sure and stretch and warm up more than usual before doing anything to strenuous. You'll have a much better workout.
Like he said its just persnal preference, convenience, and weather.

I'd have to agree with chiggyxc, doesn't much matter. I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in May and run a couple evenings after work, a couple of mornings before work and mid-day long runs on Saturday. If I had my preference, I'd make all my runs mid-day. Unfortunately, my boss expects me to show up for work if I want my paycheck.

Not sure that I'd agree with legasakimbo on being hydrated to the max in the evening. I have to make a point to drink through the day before my evening runs, or I'm least hydrated then. Maybe that's just me or the overheated office building I work in.

normally you are dehydrated when you wake up. I agree that its important to drink throughout the day in order to make sure you are ready for your evening runs. I have to carry a 32 oz Nalgene water bottle everywhere I go to make sure I am always drinking water...of course I have to pee 100x a day too

Its too believe its personal preference as to what time is best for you to run. Right now, I do most of my training runs in the afternoon/early evening, but occasionally life takes over and I have to push it back to night or wake up super early and run. I haven't noticed any real difference (other than I hate waking up).

Although in the evening there is generally less wind. So maybe thats something to take into consideration?

btw, XCrunner_JC, I checked out your profile and saw you are doing the Geist half. I'm planning on coming up there if I don't qualify for nats. From the looks of the elevation profile, it looks like it will be pretty flat and fast.

Yeah, it's pretty flat around here. We have to drive at least 60 miles for any hills to run.

Thanks for everyones opinions! I normally try to do my runs in the afternoons or evenings, but I wanted to know what other people thought about it.

    Hello,

I started jogging recently and do it after I have cycled home from work at around 5pmish, so that works for me.

I like running early in the day cuz I'm getting rid of some body fat, and like the metabolic advantage during the day. : )

I also find it really jump-starts me for the day. Clears out the stress and let's me focus. I've not been running long (off and on for a couple years), and I'm afraid I'm turning into one of those people who "has to run." I don't like life as much the days I don't.

Oh well, I'm used to be several different kinds of "one of those people," so what's one more? : )
