Last night we released a new version of the beta mapping tool with a lot of improvements. Please add your feedback here!

Looks like I logged onto the site just in time for use of the new tool. I'm using the site to plot profiles for bike rides (in NSW Australia). Very happy with how quick it is compared to the old tool (used to get very slow if you went over about 50km) ... BUT ... not so happy with 3 things.
Minor problem: When you specify METRIC in profile the tool still starts off showing MILES on the distance marker slide. This changes immediately to KM as soon as you move the slider.
More of a problem: When you ask to display elevation profiles it ONLY displays FEET for altitude and MILES for distance - even though you can toggle between KM/MI at the top of the page (for distance markers)
2 more minor problems (would be nice to have - like in old tool)
There is no max/min, ascent/descent display at the end of the elevation profile.
I'm doing screen copies and pasting into a document to send to others for a 70km route. Would it also be possible to make the distance markers a bit smaller (or possibly a range of sizes). They practically obliterate the path at that scale. A smaller box with number would be perfectly adequate.
Thanks, Ian

We've just released the mapping tool for the 'create' page for now, but we'll be rolling it out on more pages shortly. Stay tuned.

One of the primary goals for the new mapping technology is increased performance with longer routes. In our tests, the new map is significantly faster than the old one. Please give it a spin for your longer routes and keep us updated.
Thanks for the bug reports as well, we're on em.

I've used the new tool briefly. A few observations and requests:

I'll tweak the undo functionality as you've requested.
As for the views- we've got em, they just moved. Check below the map to the right. You'll even see that there's a new map type in there- terrrain.
I must be blind. I don't see them.
Also, where's the option to go "full screen"? Thanks.
Undo and Clear all points still do not clear the last data point. This has forced me to start mapping from scratch a couple of times.
Hey guys-
I just released a new version that fixes most of the undo issues. If you clear your cache and reload, you should be set.

whoa this new version is awesome! However, there quite a few bugs.
1. I think that when the map reloaded data from a previously incomplete route it spewed at all kinds of problems including the inability to save and it kept the notes from the previous ride even after I hit clear all.
2. The map type selector toolbar below the map isn't always visible in my browser and sometimes it's cut off
3. The start icon became a water icon after I looked at the route in the regular version.
Otherwise nice job and keep up the good work!
Great work ... A few minor bugs
(1) Same problem as DJStroky. Start Icon became a water icon, when I looked at the route in regular version
(2) Follow roads cuts off road corners when the map is magnified to the highest two levels of magnification
(3) My profile requests kms and meters, but In create mode displays in miles and ft
(4) In settings, the "show distance markers" still shows miles, even when "km" is selected. It does however change to km ok as soon as the selector bar is moved. (This by the way has been improved significantly from an earlier version, where the distance did not increment in discrete number of km)
(5) In Print Out mode, the map shows the route, but the roads disappear
(6) In print out mode, the elevations and distance markers are in ft and miles, and not meters and km according to my profile.
I created a route that was 165 miles in the beta mode (I use it to document my motorcycle rides) and it saved the route in my profile just fine. However, once the route saved I noticed I made a typo in the title so I went to edit the route's title and in doing so the last 120 miles of my route somehow got "lopped off," after I clicked save.
I'm using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox so I don't know if this has anything to do with my issue.
My route profile still shows the route as being 165 miles but when I click to view the route, it only displays the first 45 miles of it.
When I save the route as a KML, the same thing happens (kml exports only first 45 miles of the route).
I hope this issue gets resolved because it took me a long time to click a 165 mile route, and unfortunately I'm going to have to redo it from scratch.
Has anyone else noticed a similar issue?
I just used the tool to create a 200 mile ride. The undo is much better but if used more than once consecutively it reverts back to only taking one point off at a time. It also sometimes leaves bits of highlighted road behind, these bits aren't saved but do stay even when repainted. I also got caught in an infinite loop the first time I used it but wasn't able to recreate it.
When you get around to it it would be great to make the cue sheet a little more cycle friendly, or at least have different options. A lot of cyclists use something like:
total-cue-----------------------------------------next distance
0.0 - TR - Leave driveway and turn right - 5.6
5.6 - TL - Turn left onto Whatever Road - 10.3
15.9- SO- Straight ahead over the bridge - 3.4
19.3- TR- Turn right into driveway. You're home.
Also I'm personally starting to find the dimming effect a little annoying.
Keep up the great work guys!
Can you add accumulated elevation gain?
Can you provide a means to determine percent grade on an ascent/descent ... say by clicking on two points on the elevation profile?
Maybe this has been brought up before, or I'm just stupid, but I can't figure out a way to default to showing my weekly mileage, as opposed to monthly. That would be much more helpful. I'd like to be able to know it without running a report for each week.
Many thanks.
I agree, editing routes is difficult. Also it appears we cannot edit in the Beta version. It seems to go the the old version.
I have had my cue sheet (Notes) disapear when I edit. The insert a waypoint feature seldom works.
beta seems to die "please wait" never ends it happened whne i was adding a new point to be precise it was aleft turn
I can't see routes after I have created/edited them in beta.
It would be cool to just update the old one with new markers cause that is the only bonus I can see on the BETA.
I’ve had a couple recurring (and show-stopping) problems using the Beta tool.
1. displaying elevation brings up and error message box, or simply does not display.
2. opening existing routes for editing and getting a route straight from San Francisco to Nigeria.
For those having issues viewing routes, can you please post links to the routes you're having issues with so I can investigate further?
Also, for those having problems viewing elevation, is that when you're creating a route, or when viewing a saved route? Additionally, if you can provide more information about what browser you're using, it will help me track things down. One thing to note with the new layout is that sometimes you'll have to scroll your browser window down to see the elevation overlay that is placed on top of the map.
Thanks for the feedback guys, it's helpful.

I'm having trouble with this map for some reason (posted about it earlier). I just can't see it, the screen is grey and says i need to zoom out, althoughI'm all the way out.

Thanks a bunch!
If you look at any of the routes I've created (all have been created in the beta) - the cues that appear in the beta don't get carried over to the notes in the live version. I'm not sure that this is intentional or not.
Also, I've had much better luck creating routes in IE than in Firefox. Firefox (latest version) hangs a lot when using auto-routing. It says "please wait" and never comes back.
The last thing is with the save function. I think the cookie times out too fast or something, but if you take a long time to map something, the save button asks you to login. Then, it'll never let you go to the next screen where you enter the route information - so you can't save at all. At least the screen is good at recovering lost data when you re-enter.
There is a separate thread about the "save" issue but that is my one huge gripe right now. Just lost a 150 mile ride because it wouldn't move to the next screen to let me choose ride type, which is apparently required data.
Also found toward the end that there would not just be a delay, but a delay without any indication that the system was doing anything. Overall, a pretty cool tool, however.
Hey Ken-
You can export your route to a Gamin format: check out the 'export' button. enjoy.
I had a route sort of die in the edit screen: http://www.mapmyride.com/edit_route?r=715727026
It looks ok when you view the route, but when you go to edit it, the screen defaults to the world view, says 0 miles, and has only half the route displayed.
Hey phanto-
You need to save the map to your profile before you can export, but when viewing a saved route you should see the export button. Did you save your route first?
Hi,
the elevation tool could be a lot more nicer. I am sorry, but I have to say, that it is currently UGLY comparing to other tools on this great site. Also the elevation is shown only in feets olthough I have metric system selected.
The biggiest problem with this beta is, that I can not open my saved maps as the links seem to be broken, but I posted a separate Thread about this already. However, it seems so, that not everybody is experiencing this bug...
