I was seeing the same thing yesterday. I think it might actually be a google maps server issue. But I'm not really sure. It seemed to resolve itself after about 15 or 20 minutes for me.
Regarding the "imagery not available" message, this is sometimes an issue with Google Maps.
If anyone is still having difficulties, would you mind posting what country you are from? Sometimes it is only users in certain parts of the world that experience issues like this at certain times.
I have also been having the same problem for nearly 2 weeks. The sat image is there (in my case I could see the writing on the runwat at Stuttgart Airport) and then it just goes mad and comes up with the 'we are sorry but we do not have imagery at this zoom level. Try zooming out for a broader look' .. and that also does not work.
Before I found the site really excellent but now I cannot map any of my runs as they are all 'off road' and I need the sat image.
I am in Northern Virginia, USA and I am having the same problem. Both hybrid and satellite views cut out and won't return regardless of how far I zoom out.
I try really hard to like this site, but, for a site specifically for runners, not to incude footpaths on the streetmap is just plain daft. So far, the three of four times I've used it, my experience has been extremely frustrating, with different problems each time... hence long gaps between visits. The satellite map has just cut out for me and I'm in West Sussex, UK.
Im in Washington DC and I have been having this issue for weeks now. The site is getting pretty frustrating and as I get more and more used to the distances in the areas I enjoy running in, I am finding less and less reason to use the site other than for seeing how many calories I burn. I can map out something similar on yahoo maps or mapquest to get real distance and then use one of the many calorie calculators on the web that are far more accurate to do the same things that I currently do here. I enjoy having the site I enjoy the tools on here and seeing how many miles i log running and walking my dog, but the time I have been spending fixing routes that I had to save unfinished due to glitches and other problems is getting out of hand and making me less and less interested in the site. Its turning out to be like communism, great idea, but its hard to make it work.
I have found a temporary fix for the satelite dropping out by leaving the map open and taking a break. Coming back 20 - 30 minutes later and the satelite view usually comes back. If not then shutting down the window and coming back has helped too. I also experienced the same problem on another rum mapping program so perhaps it is a google earth server problem.
Based on this thread, we have been investigating this issue. It turns out other sites using the Google Maps API are having similar issues. You can check out a thread on the Google Maps API group for more information. I have submitted our feedback and I will also reference this thread so that Google may get more information to debug this issue.
As always, thanks for the feedback, we're constantly working to improve.
