Everyone who has been running for any decent lenght of time has some great stories, and i wanna hear em! Anything from crazy workouts, weather, random funny stuff, things you've witnessed, anything. So lets hear it.
I'll start things off with one off the top of my head. Two winters ago some friends and I were doing a hard 10miler on a pretty hilly dirt road. When we started it was about 45F and slightly windy so most of us were just in shorts (the tiny ones) and t-shirts. We were cruising along at no slower than 6min pace (and it was pretty muddy) when out of nowhere at mile 5 the wind picked up to at least 30mph, a very heavy drizzle started to come down and the temp dropped to 25F (I dont know how it wasnt snowing). The wind chill was 12F we learned later, and we were running directly into the wind. My vision started to go blurry, it was as if all the moisture in my eyes was trying to freeze. By the time we got done we all had ice in our hair and th sweat we had worked up before the temp dropped was froen too. Between the lack of clothes, a drizzle that was practically rain, sweat, and wind it was the coldest I have ever been in my life. What a great run. ;)
(1) My freshman year, we went on a polar bear run. It was like 5 degrees outside and we all went and ran around campus (a one mile loop) with just our short shorts on. No t-shirt, no nothing. It was snowing pretty hard. The looks we got from passers by were priceless.
(2) Another time, I was out running on some country roads with one of my buddies. We were going up this hill and there was a car parked in the middle of the road and this lady who was walking her dog was talking to the people in the car. Out of the woods comes this really scruffy nasty looking dog and it basically starts raping this woman's dog. The funny thing was that she was completely oblivious to what was going on...my friend and I died laughing, those people had to think we were crazy until they figured out what was going on.
I can probably provide more, but its probably better everyone shares their stories
I was at track practice and me and the distance team were doing a usual distance run in county park. Were running along the bike path and theres a mb of geese on our left by a lake. Then when we passes, we noticed one of them was chasing us, then it went airbourne and flew onto my friends back and started hissing and flapping. The funny thing is it stayed on his back for a good 10 seconds. This is just one of many stories since kids in my town are insane
My wife and I were out running our hillup route in February. It was about 40 some degrees and occasional sprinkles. About half way through our run as we were approaching the point farthest from home the tornado sirens started blaring and that often mentioned train noise was getting louder. Luckily a tornado didn't drop from the sky but the sound was the wall of sleet approaching at like 40 miles an hour. Some guy had stepped out on his porch to check the weather as we were running up to his house. He looked pretty surprised. We ended up standing in their doorway for about 5 minutes as the sleet passed and the imminent tornado danger was gone. Behind the wall of sleet and fast wind was a drenching rain that was falling in 20 some degree air. The streets were basically covered in water. Really fun. The next day at work everyone was sharing their stories about where they were when the tornado sirens went off.
This past February I was in a training program for a half marathon. This was our second or third group run at a little after 7:00 PM on a Tuesday night. The plan was to do about 4 miles at a 9-10 min pace, 2 miles out and 2 back. The weather report said a severe storm was on the way in about 30-40 minutes. Clearly we didn't have any mathematicians in the group. We head out. About 4 blocks into the run the sirens go off. Some of the group decide that discretion is the better part of valor and head back. Some of us are less intelligent and keep going. About a mile into the out and back the skies open up. I have never gotten so wet so fast without jumping into a pool. When the hail started (pea size and smaller, thankfully) we finally decided to turn back. Needless to say, it was not the most enjoyable run I've ever taken. By the time we made it back to the starting point, the rain had reduced in intensity to something gentle that was actually enjoyable to run in. However I was carrying at least 5 extra pounds by then. Had nowhere to change til I got home so I had to put a towel on the car seat for the next couple of days.
