I have been running  every wednesday (at least 5miles) since last year - however, if i try to run on, say friday as well as wednesday, i seem to get muscle pain in my lower leg/legs (the inside of my shin - shin splints?)

I would like to run at least 3 times a week, but this seriously puts a dampner on things.

Also, if i try to run with this pain (i did this once last year) i end up with an injury (bruised muscle apparantly) and am out of action for at least a month!

    Can any one help?

P.S I had a gait analysis, got suitable trainers according to the results which seem really good, but still get the pain.

P.P.S I run with my weight towards the front of my foot (ball of feet by toes) - i constantly try to land on my heels first, but no joy.

you may hear from some of the more experienced runners on this board, but when i first started adding more mileage beyond 3 miles i started to get pain in my knee and would be knocked out for a week or two, then it would happen all over again. i did three things after doing a little research that solved the problem:

    • went and got professionally fitted for the right shoes which it sounds like you've done
    • did special stretches and some leg strengthening exercises (you can easily find special exercises to do by googling a little more specifically what pain you have in your legs - apparently a lot of shin splints and knee pain is caused by a lack of muscle development in specific parts of the leg)
    • put myself on a specific running plan. try looking up the "one hour runner" plan which has multiple weeks up front of simply making sure you can make it through multiple 30 minute runs during the week before starting to build farther.

    Good luck!

I would be very careful about adding additional distance too quickly.  I have read that 10% increases each week is ideal.

One other thing, be sure to cross-train.  I make sure to do some weight training at least twice a week (especially lower body stuff).  I had some knee problems about 6 months ago and went through physical therapy for it.  The therapist told me that although running is great for you, it doesn't necessarily strengthen your legs all over.  I do leg press, hamstring curls, etc...  I haven't had any problems since.  As the writer above said, many aches and pains are definitely caused by weakness in certain leg muscles.

    Good luck!
