HI
I have recently taken up running again though I am in good shape from various team sports I play weekly. My old shoes we NB and I bought them years ago because of all things, I liked the colours.
I recently bought a new pair of shoes - different brand but ones that the staff at the store recommended for my feet. It was a running store so I felt I was in good hands. Plus they felt like air clouds on my feet.
I hit the road three weeks ago and after my normal 7 km morning run I came home to only realise a half hour later my hamstring was seriusly strained.
I rested it for two weeks, stretching and getting a sports massage and thought I would try them again. This time taking it real easy - slow pace and low distance - but now my calfs feel like they are both ripping apart! Walking with a noticable limp etc.
Here are my questions - Will I get use to the shoes over time? Is this common when switching brands and styles? Has anyone else experienced this? Finally, why does ageing suck?
Thanks for your help.
i only have an answer for the last one because its there :) as to the other questions i find that new shoes sometimes change ones stride which causes the muscles to have to change their structure to become properly adjusted this can take some time and a bit of pain but you already know that also often when i run slow my strike point for my foot falls moves to the ball of my foot which destroys my calfs i find that nb shoes tend to be over cushioned and thus promote bad striding habits moving to a less cushioned shoe should while it is painful in the short term provide you with less injuries down the line
As far as changing shoes hurting your hamstring the true answer is maybe or maybe not. As Phinny pointed out a new pair of shoes could change the way that you run. Its also possible that you just strained the hammy while running (speeding up to cross a street, or finishing off a run fast). Sometimes when you strain a muscle you don't feel it right away, so its hard to know what actually caused it. I would rest it and go off the assumption that its not the shoes, my guess is that is was something else. I am just basing it on personal experience.
Thanks for the help. Nursing them both still. The hamstring is still very sore, very high almost where the muscle would attach I think. I haven't run in a week now and will avoid it for one more week - sucks, soccer tomoroow night for top spot in league. Stretching helps a bit but it tightens so quickely esp. tied to the desk at work. I remebered that I yanked the same area of the hamstring on the skihill this winter so I think I may have not rehabbed it properly then!
The hamstring is in an odd hight area and tough to stretch. When I find a way to get to it it is a bit painful but not seriously painful. Should I stretch to my comfort level? I want to stretch through it but think forcing it will do more damage!
