    Hi Everyone.

Ive been here for a few months now, but this is my first post.  Ive been running for 2 or 3 months, and im currently up to running 2 - 3 times a week, with my long run at around the 7.5 mile mark.

My training schedule over the past week and a half has been as follows

    19th - 7.5miles, 1 hr 2min (felt comfortable)

22nd - 7.5miles 59min (felt good, pb time for this route)

24th - 5.8miles 46min (again felt good, pb time for this route)

    28th - 5.8miles 51min (felt hard - struggled)

As you can see my run on the 28th was signifiantly slower and I really struggled on this (in fact its one of the first times I have considered stopping and walking on a run, but I resisted temptation)

Is this likely to be thte result of overtraining?  I should also mention that it was quite hot on Monday so could it be a result of the heat / partial dehydration?

I am going out tonight and was thinking of 8.5miles (I am running a half marathon in October so I am slowly taking my distance up every couple of weeks) - would I be better off to do a shorter easier run and save my long run for Friday / Saturday?

One bad run does not mean that you are over training, over training results in a series of poor performance.  I would really look at the  situation of the run, like you said heat and fluids.  American college of sports medicine recommends that you pre-hydrate prior to an event (a run in this case).  Around 4-6 ml/kg about an hour and a half prior to your run.  So if your are 150 lbs that is 68 Kg and would require anywhere from 275ml to 410ml of fluid.  It sounds like you are building your base apropiatly.

Over-training has many symptoms.  Depression, REPEATED POOR PERFORMANCE, injuries, weight fluctuation, loss of enthusiasm, insomnia, headaches, etc.  Listen to your body.  If you need a rest, then rest; I guarantee you that a couple more days of rest will not kill ya'.  ;)  Keep up the awesome work!
