I'm looking to purchase an entry-level road bike.
I'm not sure what to think about this bike. I've never really bought a bike properly before, I walked in thought that LOOKS nice and bought it. Whereas now I'm looking for performance, and I really have no idea about the jargon.
Has anyone experienced the trek 1000? I've been kinda sifting through results and this one seems to tick the boxes, most bang for my rather limited budget. From £300-400.
Edit: I believe that the 2008 trek 1000 is actually a 1.2 can anyone confirm?
You are correct, the 2008's are 1.2. They are good bikes, but you first need to decide what you eventually intend on making of your rides, do you want to race, tour, or just ride for fun and excersise. The 1.2 had very entry level components, and while the are fine for casual riding and such, they really are somewhat lacking in the racing category. I believe the 1.2 come with Shimano Sora components which is the entry level.
More important that the make and model of the bike is the "fit" of the bike, even a Madone 6.9 will be uncomfortable and unpleasant to use after a while with improper fit. Even if you don't purchase from a LBS, and personally, I would recommend it, at least go in and let them fit you for a bike. The will be able to give you an idea of size and geometry on what will most likely be comfortable for you.
The first nice bike that I bought was a 2007 trek 1000. bought in craigslist from someone. So the price was good. I bought it because of looks and did not realize that the size was too big for me. after a few months I just sold it. I now have another 1000 and I will tell you. I have no complaints. I used it for recreational rides. Now I have registered for a couple of official rides and I am looking into racing. I am looking into upgrading not because the bike would not respond but just because. Good luck.
Cheers
The Trek 1.2 is pretty decent for an entry level, but I wouldn't hold yourself to only that brand. I would go to a couple of bike shops and test ride their entry level bikes. That way you can get a better feel for what you like the most. I road a Trek and a Felt at one bike shop and I actually liked the feel of the Felt a little better. The Sora components are OK, but like it was stated, they are the entry level components and may not be quite as smooth (re: shifting) than some higher end components.
The best bang for your buck would be to search craigslist for a used bike. You do need to be careful that the bike you are buying is in good shape, but you will truely get the best components for your price range. A couple months ago I bought a 2006 Lemond Zurich for $650 and I absolutely love it! The guy was moving to Florida and originally bought it for half price, so he gave me a good deal on it. So for less than most entry level bikes, I got a mostly Carbon frame with Ultegra components. If you search long enough on craigslist you will find a good deal.
