I've been reading and responding to a few blogs here and think I can get some good insight on this question. Tongue out

My old 80s Guerciotti needs upgrading from Shim 105 6sp - but I'm debating btwn buying Campy Veloce 10sp (looks like good price point)  parts or Ultegra 10sp parts with some Dura-Ace 10sp down-tube shifters.

The plan is to keep my existing Shim. 105 50/40 chainring and mate that with a 12-25 or 12-27 cassette.

On another bike I have the Campy C-Record 6sp groupo with Synchro shifters and that runs smooth too.

You need to make sure your rear triangle is 130mm before attempting to upgrade to 10 speed from 6 sp.  Some 6 speed are 126mm.

I prefer Campy because it is repairable.  Shimano tends to be replace, not repair, particularly the shifters/brake levers.

I'm not aware of down tube shifters for 10 speed setups, but maybe they exist.  But one big reason to upgrade is the integrated shifters.

As far as cassettes, I like the tightest spacing I can stand.  I have a 12-23.  Of course I can't handle major hills either, at least not yet.  But I like not having big jumps between gears.
