We're happy to announce that we've officially released our new mapping tool to MapMyRide.com and the other sites.  We've taken all your feedback and have made improvements to the tool and are continuing to do so ...

Please check it out and let us know what you think!

If you are having specific issue, please also add your browser and browser version. (i.e, IE6, FF3, Safari 2.0) Also, please paste a copy of the link to the mapping tool you are using. Many of these issues relate to Version 3.0 which is why we have a newer version 3.1!

    Cheers,

-Kevin & the rest of the MapMyFitness Team

This is greatly improved. It's certainly nice to have a working undo feature. I also like the simple settings displayed for only elevation and following roads, as these are the only two that I often access. So far as mapping goes, I am generally content with this version.

While I would gladly use the new mapping tool for mapping, it is utterly lacking when it comes to saving a workout to my training log. The old version had an option that would automatically assume that you would be doing so, and it would also fill in as much of the data as possible, including the zip code at which the map had started, and the workout description in the "Date - Route Name" format. Both of these were greatly appreciated. Also missed is the fact that the original mapping tool assumed that the route was being saved publicly unless 'save anonymously' had originally been selected. While saving a ride to my training log, it also sets the workout type to 'run' even when the route had been saved as a bike ride. Also, while the old version simply would not save a start and end time if they weren't selected, the new version saves them as starting and ending at 00:00:00 am.

Unless these issues can be fixed and the save to training log feature brought up to the quality of the original, please don't discontinue the old mapping tool.

Thank you for continuing to improve this website, but please don't alienate long-time users in the process.

    jr98664,

Thanks so much for the feedback -- Let me ask you a couple questions to get more detail.  Can you also provide the link to the mapping tool you just used?

    1) If you are in a city and then you save your route, is the zip-code the only field not being popualated? We try to pre-populate the form with as much information as we have based on a reverse lookup.  What specific city/state were you routing in?

    2) For privacy reasons we needed to make 'public' an opt-in feature so people didn't overlook and make publically available their home location or work location.  Would this be more suited as a user prference? ie, default all new routes to public?

    3) The Add-Workout type field is actually based off of the workout calendar, but you're right, we should also use the Route Type if you didn't use the Workout Calculator.  We'll look at that first thing in the morning (as well as the 00:00:00 workout times)

    Thanks jr98664!

    -Kevin

Just used the newest update. The weird thing with not being able to pass the same point more than once, because the boxes block you, is still there. Can you provide some kind of explanation for what is supposed to be functional about that??!! Or provide a way to get past the durned things? Also, when you get to the edge of the displayed map, you no longer get the automated ... was it "re-center"? where the map moved. Now you have to physically move the map yourself to continue on past the original boundary. The old "re-center" was often wrong, but it was better than the new lumpishness that forces you to do every move yourself.

We're looking for a way to allow people to toggle edit mode off if they want to plot near the route. We recommend zooming but we should have an update for this soon...

As for the 're-center' option -- look in the Map Settings.  It's now a saveable preference!

     Cheers,

The new mapping tool is completely useless and unusable.  That stupid ad won't go away no matter what you do, and it makes it impossible to use the tool.  Also, no matter what you choose, the recenter option is always ON, and that's a royal pain as well.

Just tried using the new tool.  It's not working right.  It opens the map to a very tight view of a city 45 minutes away from my home, the scale on the left is blacked out, I cannot pan out to recenter the map, and I tried to change the name of the city in the toolbar at the top of the map several times, but it wouldn't allow me to.  When I finally got to my hometown, I clicked on the location of the start of my ride, and the tool told me that the distance was too great ... I hadn't even begun to map a route yet.

    This is good stuff.

    1) Ad -- Many users have complained about the Ad taking up too much space.  Realistically, compared to the previous version and more importantly the version before that, the ad and the ad container takes up a lot less real-estate than the dedicated panel to the left (previous version) or the full-height add to the right (oldest version).  This ad placement is also moveable so you can place it where it causes the least inconvenience.

    2) Auto-Center -- this is a map setting. Set it, then click the 'Save' button and this setting will persist.  If you are logged in, it is actually saved to your profile.  If it is still not saving, can you please send us your browser and version?

    3)  IE6 - There are known issues with IE6 (hence IE7 and IE8) but we're working on trying to come up with IE6 design workarounds.  Currently we are aware of two IE6 issues: a) Jump-To box doesn't allow text selection and the cursor doesn't appear, and b) IE6 doesn't allow for transparent images (PNG) so the zoom-background is just a blob.  We're working on these as I type!

    Thanks Guys!

    Cheers,

     -Kevin

</i>Actually, that's not so.  The ad can be moved, but it will not stay where you put it, it keeps coming back right under your cursor, making it impossible to actually use the site.  It isn't so much an ad as it is extortion: pay up and we'll make this horrible ad go away.  It isn't persuasive and it isn't cute, and I'm definitely <b>not</b> amused.

Yes it is a map setting, but with Firefox 3.0.x on Linux that setting has no effect. Autocenter is always on, no matter what the checkbox says.  I never want autocenter, but since December or so it is always on.

I discovered yesterday your new approach to route notes.  It makes the site worthless to me.   I used to be able to create a route, copy and paste the notes into a spreadsheet and produce cue sheets.  Now, I have to retype the notes, because they can no longer be copied.

Again0 I would gladly use the new mapping tool, but it is missing the one feature I liked most. Searching for routes right on the map. The reason this is helpful is because I live in a small town and a long bike ride, although it may start in another town, might roll right by my house. By searching right on the map, i can find nearby routes quickly.

We'll have our team look at your issues in FF3.0 in Linux.

I also like your comment about the cut/paste notes -- I'll take a look at what we can do on the view side.  Did you know our printing option even includes things like foldable cue-sheet views as we auto-do this for you?

TallGaloot: We're going to be releasing a more map-centric search option soon so keep your eye out for it! We've decided to move it off of the 'create' page as it was confusing to a lot of other users.

A problem with all the mapping tools is that they don't use the mi/km preference setting that I have saved.  Every time I start a new route or open one I've already saved, I have to change the pull-down to display 'km'.

Another nice feature to have would be a preference setting for which map view (road, hybrid, satellite, etc.).  I really like the hybrid but I have to select it each time.

    Thanks,

    Leslie

I will be sad when the old tool closes down. It was really a fantastic design. The thing I will miss most is being able to pass the same spot on a ride. If I go to a destination one way, but don't want to do "out and back" because I want to vary my route, I can't plot back to home because I can't click on a part of the map where I've already been. Can this be fixed, or an I doing something wrong? Thanks!

The new ad "block" -Road ID - at the moment that appears when a map is opened is a bunch of junk.  I will not be bribed in order to sign up for the Premium Service and I am not sure I am willing to deal with the box every time I open a map.  I have posted several (30 -40) maps for the use of local cyclists.  I have also recommended the site to many of my cycling friends.  At this point I am not sure what I want to do - maybe just delete my maps and find another mapping site.  MMR is a great site.  Please dump the "pop ups".

WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO PASS THE SAME SPOT MORE THAN ONCE ON A RIDE. "Out and Back" is rare, but we all often use the same 5 mile stretch of road at the beginning and end of a ride. Once on the way out, and then once on the way back in.

This mapping tool is a p.o.s.! Very frustrating! I spend a bunch of time creating a ride, and then right near the end, it makes a straight line that goes off in some arbitrary direction to link up with some other point on my ride. My membership fee was a waste of money. I want my money back.

sheesh, I'm amazed to suddenly find a lot of people grumping about issues I've been having with the new model for... since it started? AND to suddenly find that I've got answers for a number of things: a) the on-map ad is annoying but it will move and stay moved, for me (Mac Intel, Safari). grabbing it on the gray border EVERY time is annoying, but it works. Actually, I've been using the original version heavily since summer 08, and I don't remember on-map ads there, ever... b) passing the same spot -- I do now have a [clunky, annoying but successful] work-around for this: watching the FAQ videos showed me that you can grab and drag the dratted, stupid box and move it out of the way, temporarily, in order to make room to plot a second point on the same spot; then you can move the first one back. You do have to move it back, or it skunks up your mileage. You also often have to zoom in closer (bigger street space), this also helps open up more space for a duplicate spot placement. Getting the first box to "come back" so you can put it back, that I haven't quite figured out the logic of, but eventually I can get it to re-appear. c) cursor -- is there a way to get rid of the dorky 5-finger hand? it takes up a LOT of space and I can't figure out where it's going to put the marker "spot". The point cursor from the old version was a LOT easier to use. I do see that sometimes (no idea what brings it up) there is a circle with a cross form cursor. I've struggled through the mostly-circular help subjects and can't find anything about changing cursors, or definitions of the circumstances when you get the different cursors (full hand, pointer-finger-hand, target-cross...) d) settings don't always stay set -- I definitely turned off the mileage markers a couple of sessions back (and saved the change, duh!), but they were on tonite... e) actually, I was missing the re-center function, because it WASN'T on! (for me) but I found it tonite in Settings and turned it on. It's sorta, kinda more erratic and abrupt than in the old version, will have to see how it wears... f) just realized there was an answer up there to a previous post of mine, 8-) -- what means this "toggle edit mode" which I think was re the "not being able to pass the same point" problem? I'm here, so can't go hunt for "edit mode", but will try to remember to look for it later... FYI, I do not and will not be using all the group/social functionality. we are currently only using this to calculate mileage AFTER we ride, and mph. we're riding for diabetes exercise, and to do close-radius shopping for health and green-virtue (instead of using the not-great-mpg vehicle, for stuff within a couple of miles). It would be REALLY nice if, for calorie calculation, you could change rider's weight mid-ride, to reflect that you're hauling an extra 20 pounds of groceries on the home leg... Also, if there's any way to factor in head winds and rain, 8-) -- you know you burn more calories in the cold, wet and wind -- don't you??? anyway, I'm glad the new version is becoming somewhat more manageable. familiarity, I guess. Wish I could understand the functional reason for the GREAT BIG SQUARES that pop up all over the route, and THE GREAT BIG CURSORS, but I'm learning how to get around them anyway.

When I enter my run workout, the calories burned, pace, etc. calculate incorrectly. It seems to be a glitch with the seconds box. I mapped a 2.95-mile course and entered a time of 19:48. When I hit "recalculate" to see my calories burned and pace, it says something like 7,127 calories and a pace of 345 minutes/mile with a speed of .1 miles per hour. When I take out the seconds, though, it calculates that speed, pace and calories burned correctly. Please fix it when you get a chance…thanks!

technical question this time... I have turned on the "re-center" and it's working... sorta. when I'm approaching the edge of the map on the North and ... East, I think, West usually works too... the re-center zooms off, like I expect it too. (it does seem to go further than it used to... the drawn portion ends up practically off the screen) HOWEVER! The point TODAY is that when I turn back to the South... nothing. Maybe I'm not waiting long enough for it to register, MAYBE... but it hasn't ever done it yet. I usually end up with the cursor moved right back, clear down to the South border of the map, and then wait... until I end up having to move the map manually with the arrow buttons. I don't expect it's (re-center) supposed to be working only in SOME directions, so I thought I'd mention it. (Mac Intel, Safari)

I  have done a couople of maps already with the new version and it works pretty good.

It is frustrating, however, to get the ID bracelet ad which cannot be closed.  Also the welcome block keeps coming up each time I logon or start a new map even after I checked the block to now show it again.

Would be nice if this version could have a "from" and "to" address or location to more easily drae route maps.

    thasaint:

Can you paste which version of the mapping tool you are using? I ran through your numbers using our newest version (http://www.mapmyride.com/create_new) and the calories calculated correctly.

    bdixon:

To manually insert a note, click on a point (ie., the small square image) or a custom marker icon and a info-window will open.  You can type your note in there. Adding Custom Icons will also auto add notes.

We're soon to release an update addressing most of the issues above so keep your eye out for it!

    Hi,

When I use the new tool to create my maps I always get an API error, is there something I am supposed to do, or is this a bug? If so, please do not discontinue the old mapping tool until it is fixed. I like it just fine.

The auto routing is not working for me.  It comes up with routes that add literally 20 miles when picking a point only a mile away from the last point mapped.  IE6

It is virtually impossible to edit a route. Points do not move and can't be deleted. The only way to change a route is it to undo it from the very end, which is a huge waste of time. There is no help screen on editing.

I have tried to use the new version and I just don't like it. In fact when I go in to edit a route it seems to be the default and I can't get back to the old version which I prefer. So I end up deleting my route and recreating it in the old version. I think I'm just going to go back to using map source. This new version is also sluggish on my machine. That's too back because I chose the older version over Map Source for several reasons. One of my biggest problems with it is all the little points it stick in there and they're all clumped together so you can't click on the one you want to click on and when you click on one it  at a new one on each side of that one and you have more. It is better when it is more simple. (KISS) Keep it simple, stupid.

I tried the new tool, but it greys out the panning feature and I do not like the "hand" rather than the "crossbar".

I am 63 years old and just started walking for my health within the last year.  I like to look at the area to decide just where I'll walk before I start, which is why I like the panning feature.

I use AOL and IE 7 and Foxfire and in every browser the panning feature is greyed out.

Other than that, I really like "Map My Walk".  It lets me set goals for myself.
