    Good morning, all,

Thought I would do that obligatory introduction post since this looked like the appropriate place.

I am a relatively new cyclist. I come from a "cycling family" but never did it seriously myself until this past summer. I did it as a way to lose weight. Once I got a "real" road bike though, I now do it for the thrill of it. (and the speed... ;-) )

I finished up my 2nd century yesterday and every muscle, tendom, capillary in my body is sore as heck. But, it sure was a damn big thrill to do that. I've logged about 1200 miles since 4th of July on two bikes and love the mindset that being a cyclist has given me. It is a great hobby. I was very glad to find this site and find others out there who love the thrill of the skinny wheels on the asphalt.

    Good Morning,

Thanks to Jennifer for starting this string.  I hope it gets more replies then some of the ones I've posted before.

I've been cycling since '99 mostly because I've gotten into doing Triathlons.  Recently I've been spending more time on my bike and doing group rides (they are SO much fun!) then stand alone triathlon training.  I'm hoping that this upcoming season will find me as a Cat 5 racer in several local cycling events.  I'm no threat to go pro or anything but I love all distances and I'm fortunate enough to have 2 bikes; 1 is set up for Road Racing and 1 is set up for Triathlon/Time trial racing.  So far I've logged over 1000 miles since getting back from overseas in late May and I'm looking forward to some longer rides this winter as a base building for next year.

This site has a lot of potential for the cycling/triathlon/running/ swimming/fitness/etc. communities and I hope it continues to get better.  It has definitely helped me plan a lot of workouts and see what others are doing in my area.

That's it in a nutshell for me.  Hope to see you around at some races next season.  Don't drop me too fast!  Tongue out

    - Matt

Hello, I've been riding for a couple of years but I'm new to this site.  I'm riding for fitness but I have also done a few centuries.  I live in a rural small town so riders are few and far between but my little group has grown to where we have 8 or 9 show up at our Saturday morning rides.  Enjoy!

    Jennifer,

I guess you, The Beez, & me are it for the Cylcing introductions.  Like I said above, I wish that more would reply to this.  Oh well, such is life.

I wish you both great training this winter & maybe we'll all see each other in a blur of colors one day in a big road race.

    Hey!  I'll post!

I rode a few criteriums in high school in the 80's and hadn't really ridden since--kids and all--but I started again last summer and have gone great guns.  I got a new road bike and have ridden 4700+ so far this year.  I'm hoping to have weather warm enough to make it to 5000 miles.  I rode two races and had a blast.  I look forward to doing more next year. I have a mtn bike on layaway, too, so I can do more cold weather riding.  Lost 54 pounds, too!

This site is such a good idea. It's nice to see how people got into this sport (thanks those above) , and It's so good to be able to log the training with maps.

I wouldnt consider myself a proper cyclist yet. I'm taking my time getting into it. I found a road bike in a dumpster, it was in very bad shape. I fixed it up and started commuting and riding everywhere. It was aweseome to being going so fast on my own steam.

I live in Wellington, New Zealand, which is extremely hilly. So, I kind of accidentally got fit in the process of going places. Now enjoy just cycling for the sake of it...

... to turn this into a story, I've now decided to go a bit more extreme and have a cultural/geographical expereince by cycling across the USA. So, now my cycling has turned into actual training.

Anyone who wants to give me advice, please do. I'm slowly learning things, which may be obvious to many (eg.cadence relative to energy efficiency).

     cheer, atmosphrericks.

I'm very new to cycling - have only been riding for 2 and a half weeks now and have clocked up around 220kms (so I think I'm going okay for someone who prior to this never exercised regularly!). My goals were fairly specific - keep it up!! I really just want to get fit and in shape.

I am enjoying riding a lot more than I thought I would but would love to have someone experienced help me out with direction and general advice. I'd love to get fit enough to compete in endurance races.

My interest started because of my brother - he was around 50kg's overweight and started riding around this time last year. This weekend he is competing in the Hartley Challange - a 450km ride over 3 days. He is extremely inspirational but doesn't have the patience to deal with a 'novice' such as myself!

Can anyone point me in the direction of a fairly basic 'training program' (either online or in print) in order to shift the last few kilograms and tone up? I have read online that cycling is perhaps not the best exercise for losing weight, but I am convinced that if I continue with around 100km's a week I should notice something (even though I haven't yet.. still early days I tell myself!)

    Tyladea,

It's great to hear from a new cyclist!  The more the merrier I say.

A good place to start looking is at www.bicycling.com.  It's the online website for the Bicycling magazine.  It's got a lot of good information and it has some training programs.  Additionally you can purchase any book written by Chris Carmichael (Lance Armstrong's coach) or Joe Friel.  I've used Friel's "The Triathlete's Training Bible" for a few years now & it helped a lot when I planned out my training plan for my Ironman race.  I know Friel has a "Cyclist Training Bible" as well & I'm sure it's just as good.

There are lots of plans online so I'm sure you can Google around & find the one that's right for you.  I hope this has helped.  Keep riding & you'll see the benefits before you know it!

Thanks vmidiver. That website is certainly a good start! It has been raining on and off this week and it has become really evident that I've definitely formed some sort of habit - I am getting antsy if I can't go for a ride! I've had to become more creative in staying active - went for a swim last night and an indoor class earlier in the week.

I will check out the local bookstores this weekend (after the election tomorrow I'll enjoy the lighter reading!). I've had difficulty in searching for things online as I'd like some local (Australian) websites/training ideas, but most of what I find online is American!

Good Morning All. Just thought I would introduce myself.... I am a 58 yo cancer patient training for a fundraising ride for children's cancer research. The ride will be in the fall of 2008 and will start in Bristol, Tennessee and cross Tennessee, ending at St Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis Tennessee. I am attempting this on a custom built Lightfoot recumbent tricycle, and hope to finish the 550+ mile trip in 1- to 14 days. I am new to this level of cycling so, as you might expect, my learning curve is quite steep. I am currently in the pre-base phase of training... Any comments or advice is always welcome.... Again.. hello to all...

    Jdrury,

Thanks for the great introduction!  Good luck to you on the fundraising ride & with your battle with cancer.  My mother is a Breast Cancer survivor & my grandfather (my mom's dad) has survived colon cancer & is winning the fight with a blood cancer right now.  People like you, my mom, & my Papa are truly inspirational people.

Only advice I feel qualified to give you is keep pedaling, listen to your doctors, do your own research, and have fun biking!  It brings a lot of fun into my life & I hope it does the same for you.  Good Luck!

    Thanks for your good wishes

    John,

The plate has been kind of full but I've got 3 brothers, my father, and grandmother (Mimi) who've all been there to help out.  Mom's cancer was caught REAL early & was cut out & treated with radiation.  She's been clean for over a year now.  Papa has beaten down this blood cancer & has just started his first maintenance round of chemo.  His numbers are so good that the docs are saying he can go every other month now.  That's good news.

Anyway, I hope your battle is going well.  You'll get all the good wishes & positive vibes I can send your way.  I hope it helps!

    Morning Matt..

Glad to hear about your Mom... 1 year down and 4 to go to reach the magic 5 years!!!...  Hope too that your Papa does ok with the maintenance chemo... I am of the opinion that ANY chemo is a pain, but guess for some it is a part of life...

As far as my battle goes... am hanging in... the chemo seems unending, but guess it is a small price to pay for being alive...

Will keep all you folks in my prayers... give my best to all...

have a great day... am off to do a 15 mile training ride.... then to chemo....

    John
