SC Harbor Ride w/ Hazel Dell, no Aromas- easy route, this is the saturday morning hammerfest route.

description: starts in the SC harbor and does a loop out in south county. this is an easy route, but it is hard when people are hammering. there is only one climb of any note- up hazel dell, but that is an easy climb. most of the ride is about as flat as santa cruz gets. not very pretty out in the farm lands, but hazel dell is really beautiful. it is not a long climb, but after putting in a lot of miles, new riders can often get tired on this route. you can also turn left at mt. madonna road and cut off the hill at hazel dell. This is a challenging ride for beginners- mostly because of the mileage. but it is a good ride for people wanting to increase their base miles and go the distance.

Door to door to door ride time is anywhere from 7 to 14 hours depending on pace and fitness level.

The elevation profile is dead wrong - it's 2000 ft to San Jose from Santa Cruz and about 7000 more from San Jose to Berkeley.

Mt. Charlie/Felton Empire-hilly, challenging, but not too hard. BEAUTIFUL ride!
location: Santa Cruz, California

distance: 45.02 mi. | Rate Me!Rate Me!Rate Me!Rate Me!Rate Me! ( 1 votes / 604 views)
Route Type: Bike Ride

description: Starting at the bell tower- heading up glenwood, up mt. charlie, down bear creek and up felton empire- down empire grade and back to downtown. about 45 miles. This ride has two major climbs- charlie and felton empire. charlie is a big climb, but it is stairsteppy and you can do it easily if you just take your time. it is a good ride for getting new riders into the hills and learning to climb. new riders should just come down highway 9 and skip felton empire if they are tired. charlie is a much easier climb than felton/empire. at the top of charlie- be warned... you turn left and there is another steep, but short climb. it levels off fairly quickly, but when your legs are tired, it can catch you off guard. you think you are done climbing when you reach the top of charlie, but you have one more kick to go.
