2 july.raining in Faverges, cloudy in the local valley, and during drive towards La lechere. Cloud base was very low couldnt see peaks, continual showers though not cold and not windy. If it cleared the nth side ride would be possible, though eager hesitant about the damgerous narrow nth side, fog and miserable wet weather. Prognosis from Faverges Tourist Info centre was for showers clearing in the pm.
Drove to Bonneval, 1 km off the nth route, quite an isolated village - to say the best of its features. Numerous patches of fog where visibility was less than 100m. Only one road cyclist, and 2 tourers.- more dedicated than I at this stage! Had breakfast here at 11am, and watch patches of blue sky appear and disappear, flog/cloud roll thru, beginning to form ideas of cancelling the day!! Called it quits wrt the nth side ride and drove around valleys to check Telegraphe/Galibier route. With the day clearing at least in theis valley we decided to ride sth face of Madeleine. Started about 2 pm, beginning with 20 min ride around town. Caught by 3 french riders when stopped to fix speed sensor. Joined for ~2-3 k before 2 moved ahead. Stayed with 1, but with 2 jerseys on was getting hot, HR at 180. Reset pace to lower HR and comfort level. Stopped and removed jersey as rider #4 came by, joined him for 100m before he fell behind. Didnt notice road markers until about 6 km shown dist from La Chambre so began recording intervals at km markers. At ~9 k was beginning to wonder if Ill get there, already in lowest gear with low cadence, some time out of saddle. Sun on lower slopes made it hot. Stopped at Longchamp for something other than water, could only find coke! Only 5 k to go! And was catching others according to Sue. Last noted marker was 19 k but looking at the road ahead the route looked much further. Only sign of Madeleine was the bar/restaraunt, one of 2 buildings at the summit. Once in site only 0.5k to go and slope flattened and a sense of achievement was entertained.
From Saint-Francois-Longchamp the wind was colder and no longer refreshing, sun was out but it wasnt hot (like on lower slopes). Actually was quite cool on top and with build up of sweat, had no intensions of riding back down once Id stopped taken photos and absorbed the achievement.
Numerous riders came up from nth slope (team of AMP comprising ~10) maybe should have riden nth face, though still looked cloudy from the top.
Slight sore outer right knee and inner left knee. Back OK. Total ascent ride time 1:57, Ascent 1500 m over 19.4 k. Av speed ~10kph av grad 7.7%
Climb rating difficulty 6/10, picturesque scenery 8/10 (top sections). Would do this side again but must do the Nth face first
