Darfield to Arthurs Pass "The Main Divide"

Bike Ride

3206 ft

Begins in:
Darfield, New Zealand
Created By:
Derrick Nelson
Starts off with a steady grind uphill for 40km to the base of Porters Pass before the serious climb begins - 500 metres in under 3km - very steep over the last 500 metres. Some fast descents and a few smaller climbs up to the feed station at Castle Hill at 59km. A seriously fast descent of Craigieburn Cutting then into another long drag before another fast drop towards Cass. The real race starts now with some short but relentless grunty climbs along the Waimakariri Valley, then a long false flat up to the Bealey Hotel. Cross the river then enter the twisty beech forested approach to Arthurs Pass Village. Think you are finished? No - this is called the Main divide for a reason! One last killer of a climb over the last 3km to the summit of Arthurs Pass to the finish at just over 110km and 800m altitude. A true and classic alpine race and a challenge for any serious bike rider.
