Fantastic scenic ride along the Gulf on Perdido Key. Terrain ranges from suburban, to rural, to coastal. This map starts at the Wal Mart in Pensacola, but could be started at several shopping areas along Perdido Key as well, or even the Winn Dixie parking lot at US-98 and Blue Angel Pkwy. Check the weather, and if the wind is forecast from the west, it would be nicer to reverse the shown route -- winds along the beach can be pretty brisk. Do not attempt a short cut down Dog Track Rd between 98 and Blue Angel, it is definitely not bike friendly. The roads in Florida all have decent shoulders that can be ridden, Perdido Key has very wide shoulders that make for nice riding. Local roads in Alabama do not have shoulders but are relatively lightly traveled. Even the Foley Beach Express is not extremely busy. There is no toll for bicycles on the bridge over the intracoastal waterway in Orange Beach. Stay to the right and ride past the barricade. The only real hills will be encountered at the bridges over the ICW and Perdido Pass. If you do this route in the summer make sure to bring plenty of water and stay hydrated.
