Hillside and Prairie Trail to Lake Geneva and Back with limited Traffic
Start at Hillside and Prairie Trail. Parking and WC. North on Prairie trail through McHenry to Ringwood on the paved Trail. Left at Ringwood and you can tell where it is easy as the trail turns to pea gravel so you want to turn. Go left or West on Bernard Mills Road and continue until you curve to the right . You are paralleling Wonder lake at that time. Turn Left or West on Howe road. The previouis section with Bernard Mills is the only high traffic road and for us, it is not too bad. Head until Howe ends and take a north jog for 200 yards to Thayer. Thayer is a country road that you can put it in a big gear and pound the leggs on rollers. Keep going past the dreaded Queen Anne road and turn right or north when you see the grain silos on the corner made of steel. This is McCauley road. You cant miss them. Go north until you find yourself with a decision to go right up a hill or left in a Y. Take the right. This will become the dream road when it crosses into Wisconsin as it is newly paved and beautiful crowned branches of trees over the road. Dont stop until you fall into Lake Geneva. I have you coming back the same way and then turning back west on Thayer as it is more of the same - rollers and no traffic for a number of miles more. Then head back. You could theoretically start this route in Huntley or Algonquin on the Prairie Trail and add about 15 miles. - a 70 mi cycling route in Crystal Lake Illinois To Lake Geneva, Illinois
