Dan Cihak Memorial Duck Lake 40K TT - Michigan State 40K Championship for 2011-2012
40K Route for Dan Cihak Memorial Duck Lake TT selected as Michigan State 40K Time Trial Championship for 2011-2012. Racers ride solo and are individually timed. Start/Finish location is on Duck Lake Rd on west side of its intersection with Nestrom Rd. Racers head west just over a mile before turning and heading downhill towards Lake Michigan. This hill is not bad, perhaps MapMyRide shows it as a larger drop than it actually is because it might be mapping down to the water level. There was not a water crossing at this location that I saw. It is a beach area with road side parking, but no cars were there on the morning of the event. The course is overall smooth. All of it is one two-lane country roads. There is no shoulder in places and most of the course is very shady lined with trees. The event was well run with police closing traffic at the turns and good volunteers. At finish you make a turn off Duck Lake and head north up Nestrom Rd about a 1/4 mile to Finish Line. Parking is inside the park at the Fruitland Township Office There is a U-shaped road to park along that circles baseball diamonds where you can park and ride and warmup. Most warmup up and down Nestrom Road. The State Championship 40K is moving to this course from its former location on Hines Park Drive on the East side of the state. This Duck Lake Time Trial, is named in honor of a former local cycling enthusiast, coach, and school teacher Dan Cihak who died unexpectedly in 2001. For more information check out the West Michigan Coast Riders. The course looks to have about 125 feet of climbing/descent per each 20K lap or a total of 250 feet over the 40K. Most of the climb/descent is along the Lake Michigan shoreline along N Scenic Drive. Note: I am not associated with the Event organizers of this ride.
