On a clear day, you can ride all the way from the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit to Metro Beach Metro Park in Harrison township, then look back across Lake St. Clair to see how far you've rode = 26.5 miles. The Renaissance Center, home of the Westin hotel and GM's World Headquarters is visible due to its 700 foot height. Also you can see the Nine Mile Tower (on Nine Mile & Jefferson) which is about the mid-point of your journey. The first five miles is urban, low on pot-holes along the rapidly improving Jefferson corridor with fast food places, Belle Isle park if you want to detour and stop there. Then its on through the cities with Grosse Pointe in their name. Ride by some million dollar mansions/homes on a breathtaking 3 mile ride along the Lake Here Jefferson Ave is called Lake Shore Drive. This stretch is very popular with cyclists. Then its on into the city of St. Clair Shores, again mostly residental, except between Marter road and 10 mile. The Nautical Mile (between 9 mile and 10 mile is very famous with boating marinas, fishing, fine dining, popular bars like Fishbones where you can pull in for a snack/drink on their outdoor deck. North of Shook Road at the 7-11, you have to make a turn onto the older part of Jefferson, it gets narrow and winding, watch out for traffic. More boating places, stop at old 1960's style Eddy's drive in diner for a snack, continue on to Metro Beach MetroPark. You do not have to pay an admission to ride your bicycle into the park. You can choose to hop on the 2.2 mile trail path which rides next to the road. Have to go all the way through the park then out to the final one-mile long point which juts out into Lake St. Clair. Plenty of places to eat and relax while in the park. Have someone pick you up ($4 admission for cars) and take you home or ride back!
