The Ward Out and Back ride is a Boulder classic! Start out from Boulder Cycle Sport and head north on Route 36 West. Used this as nice warm up as you get ready for the ride up Left Hand Canyon. You'll meander gradually west up Left Hand Canyon for 15 miles, before you hit the last steep 1-1.5 mile leg busting climb to Ward. The 15 miles on Left Hand Canyon is not very steep, but it does have a few risers to will keep you honest. However, the last mile and half is brutally steep. Thankfully, there is fresh spring with free cold water on the right hand side as you approach the town of Ward. Stop to refill your bottles and soak your head if it's hot. There is a small store for food and drink just past the spring. There is no food or water available until you reach Ward. There are several ways to make this ride a longer loop by heading north or south on the Peak to Peak highway. Consult your map for options!
