Ok, I'm going to say it, here's the best, 2 hour, "in town" route that's challenging, scenic, and on low traffic roads, many of which have been recently paved. It's also a great work out for 2 hours, so if you're triathlon training and looking for a good brick first course, warm up with this. Although it's only 2 hours, it has the feel of a long traveling ride (i.e. at the end you feel you really went somewhere and saw a lot). First you head up Westover and peel off on Erskine, so that gives you 4 climbs right there in 7 miles and Erskine is a great pitch that keeps pitching. Then you head over to Trinity Pass, which out of PR center is a good hill up to Trinity Lake with three more to 124! Couple tricks of the route so you don't get lost (like I did): Turn left when you get to Mayapple, kind of counter-intuitive; Also on T Pass bear right at the first Eastwoods sign and left at the next, can throw you off. After climbing up to the Inn at PR, it's down 172 for a spell (a nice section this way, a bit of traffic, but you're moving mostly downhill fast) and back up East Middle Patent which is an easy grade with very little traffic, peaking out on Hickory Kingdom at past St. Mary's church. After that you follow the "Five hill" route home on North and Stanwich for some TT fast work and then the ever-fun roller coaster on Cognewaugh headed S (downhill) to home. They just paved the upper part of Old Long Ridge and Lower Trinity Pass so any concern with rough pavement is gone. Map my ride says 1,047 ft elevation; Psalmon says 1,600 based just on good grades over 70' each. That's 47 ft per mile - in CT 50 is very hilly, 35 is virtually flat - So Hilly, but not crazy hilly. You'll enjoy this ride as a shorter alternative, a scenic recovery, a brick kickoff, a longer evening ride, or if you are looking to extend your distance this will fit the bill. Venga!
