In the fall of 2005 I took a job 90 miles away from home, and spent a lot of time listing to audio books on my commute. One of them was The Memory of Running. The idea of spending long quiet days on a bike touring the country sounded wonderful and peaceful. A year later, my family and I had moved closer to my work and one night I saw a billboard at my local YMCA for DALMAC (a multi-day cycling tour from Lansing to Mackinaw City, MI). This seemed like a mini- Memory of Running experience, and I was excited. The DALMAC for that year had just passed, and I knew I'd need a lot of training to be able to accomplish the task. I started riding my mart-mountain bike that same week. An 11 mile ride was a chore. But I stuck with it, and by the time DALMAC arrived, I had put in almost 1200 training miles and had graduated to a road bike. The photo here is right before setting off on my adventure...
