Abilene, Texas

My name is Kevin Wellborn and I have live here in Abilene, TX since I was 4. I started riding in the June of 2008. I rode in my first bike race about a month later, the Tour de Gap (76 miles). It kicked my tale of course, but I loved it. I love cycling for the strategy, technique, comradeship, and for the pain.

Profile

When it comes to cycling, I call myself a "weekend warrior". My family and teaching 3rd grade takes up most of my time during the week. I work out in different ways during the week and jump on my bike as much as possible on the weekends. I try to sign up for as many "t-shirt rides" as I can. I won't be winning any, any time soon. In the fall of 2005 I made some life changes. I started loosing some weight. I had dropped about 25 pounds when my school held a biggest loser contest. My wife and I decided that this was a good chance for us to make a life style change. You see I don't believe in diets. The word diet implies temporary. I wanted to make a permanent change. We decided to create a healthy lifestyle for our family. In the three months of the Biggest Loser competition I lost 24 more pounds bringing me to 179. This of course was not a legit weight because I had not had anything to eat or drink in the last 12 hours. Since then I have gotten down to a legit 170. It has been almost 2 years since my wife and I made our lifestyle change. Since then, I have ridden in the Tour de Gap and regularly ride my bike 25+ miles and work out 3 times during the week. I rode the 2009 Freeze Your Fanny (60 miles) in Longview. It was raising money for their special olympic team so it was worth the drive. My wife runs regularly and has completed the Cowtown Marathon, a half marathon, and several other varying K's. She is registered to run in the Steamboat Mountain Half Marathon in March (the hardest half marathon in Texas). I plan to continue riding the Steam-n-wheels and the Tour de Gap locally each year. My personal mantra for staying healthy has been "Eat Less, Move More".
