Day one of a six day bike-camping trip. Route is a big figure 8 comprising mostly shoreline roadways of Maui. For Day One arrange support to place you and your gear atop Haleakala before sunrise. We found Banana Bungalow Hostel to be very accommodating! Had a thoroughly enjoyable evening there before departing at Ohhh-Dark-Early to arrive atop Haleakala well before sunrise. Expected chill at 10,000ft, but no worries, we're geared up with sleeping bags and witness some random shooting stars while awaiting an even more awe-inspiring display atop Haleakala, "House of the Sun". You're above the clouds looking down while the sunrise casts it's light upon your first vision of Haleakala's foreign terrain. After sunrise, gear up and go reveling in the grandeur of gravity's pull as you plunge over 20 miles down the switchbacks. Descending from cold to warm you hit the sweet spot known as eternal spring-time. Further down you reach Tedeschi Winery to rest, lunch and celebrate your survival. Now the work begins... continue down and around to desolate "back side" of Maui for backcountry camping on an uninhabited seashore. BEST RIDE EVER! Maui ride days "Two" thru "Six" are posted on Map My Ride as well, but Day One is "Da Best". Regards, Dave Gibbard
