headaches after hard rides?

Does this happen to anyone else?

After a hard ride (mountain biking or road riding) I get a headache, it usually starts about 4 hours or so after the end of the ride. I drink:

16 oz glass of orange juice in the morning (1 hour prior to the ride) with 2 servings of oatmeal

8-10 oz of water or Gatoraid just prior to the ride

80-100 oz of either water or a sport drink mix during the ride along with energy gels/bars

immediately after the ride, the remaining of the water or Gatoraid (about 8-10 oz)

then eat within 1 hour of the ride.

I feel that I am drinking enough since my urine is clear and I have to go quite frequently afterwards.

To try to stop the headaches, I have to take some Excedrin as soon as I start to feel the headache coming on. I have recently tried glucose tablets during the ride, but not enough rides with them to detremine if that helps it or not.

Any ideas on what this could be, too much hydration, not enough hydration, not enough salts, enzymes, etc...?

How about some love for hybrid bikes?

I find in most cycling publications, websites, and forums that hybrids unfortunately get second-class treatment. I know that most "serious" bikers choose road bikes or mountain bikes, but I consider myself a pretty serious fitness biker (since I got back into it this March, I've biked 3-5 times a week), and I really think a hybrid is best for me, especially for now when I only have space for one bike.

I like the versatility, extra stability and comfort. I don't go mountain biking, but I am not crazy about drop bars. Plus, I think you can often get better value out of a hybrid versus a road bike. Currently I have a Fuji Absolute 3.0 and paid $350 for it -- it's a wonderful bike.

I think one problem is that the term "hybrid" can cover a wide range of bike types -- some are basically road bikes (thin tires, no shocks, light frame) just with flat handlebars, while some are basically mountain bikes with no back shocks and slightly thinner tires. This means it's harder to drum up enthusiasm for hybrids since not everyone means the same thing.

I figured I'd start this thread to invite others to weigh in -- do you agree? Do you love your hybrid and wish they got more respect? Do you know of good websites or publications that review hybrid bikes? Do you have any recommendations for the best hybrids out there? Thanks!

Riding to work every day could be the best thing I have ever done for my health, career and general morale.

I used to spend every morning pressing the snooze button on my alarm over and over until I would finally drag myself out of bed and into the shower. I would rock into work after a 30 minute drive all sleepy eyed and cloudy. My day would pass by with no real motivation then I would drive home. Feeling dead, I decided to start riding to work.

From day one of that decision I bouce out of bed in the morning, my legs are sore from the day before. But the pay off is great. I pack my backpack and run down to the garage, get my bike out, clip in and go. A large part of my ride is around a lake with stunning views as the sun rises. I get to work after a 45 minute ride covered in sweat and very much awake, after a quick shower in the basement and putting on my Clark Kent uniform I head upstairs to my desk. The morning ride has left me charged and ready to take on the day full steam ahead. All the while craving that ride home.

This daily commute on the bike is a simple idea that has had a profound affect on my life. Anyone else had an experience like this?

Could someone tell me a good "average" cadence to shoot for during rides? Someone told me 100 is the number to shoot for. Seems a bit high for me (but perhaps my endurance will improve if I get it to 100)?

A cycling buddy of mine had mentioned to me that a helmet should be replaced every two (2) years. While I contend and have no problem with replacing a helmet anytime you should have the misfortune of getting into an accident (whether it appears damaged or not), I don't understand the rationale of replacing a helmet every two years when it's still in perfectly good working order.

I mentioned this to another experienced cyclist and he told me that several years ago when there were just fabric covers on helmets, the concern was a sunlight (UV) affect on the styrophome material that would cause it to break down, but now that we have plastic helmet outer shells that wouldn't apply anymore.

So is there a valid reason that helmets should be replaced every two years (other than the obvious style issues)?

Thanks in advance.

A way to display elevation as default

Is there any way I can construct or modify the URL for my rides such that when I share URL over email, whoever clicks on the ride will have the elevation map display by default?

For example, I have this public ride:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/santa-rosa/767124860050369153

But by default, it opens with elevation turned off. I advertise MMR's ability to show elevation profiles, but I'm tired of replying back to emails telling me the elevation chart is missing, I have to be constantly educating users that there's this little checkbox they need to click to display elevation.

Would be much better if I could just add an argument or something to the URL to force elevation chart display:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/santa-rosa/767124860050369153?elevation=on

or something like that...Thx!

Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to the site and to cycling (as a sport) and I have some questions. First, some context....

I'm part of a relay team for an upcoming triathlon, and I'll be tackling the 18-mile bike ride. I have a Trek 920 Singletrack mountain bike (from around 1998) that I bought new but I've only put about 30 miles on it (of those 30, probably only 10 on trail riding). The bike has stock equipment on it, and was basically in storage for the past 10 years. I know it's not ideal for this kind of event, but I'm doing the best with what I've got for now.

Since I started training a month ago, I've really taken a liking to it, and I've started thinking about taking up cycling as a long-term hobby (is that offensive, to call cycling a hobby?!).

So what I'm really wondering is this: If I'm going to use cycling as my main source of exercise, should I consider investing in a road bike? Or something else that isn't a mountain bike? It just seems like there's a LOT of upfront costs in this sport, and I don't have a lot of disposable income.

From what I've gathered, to get a decent used road bike I'll be looking at spending at least $500, which isn't a very realistic possibility for me right now. Is there an entry-level bike I should consider that won't break the bank? Or should I just stick with the Trek until I can justify spending that kind of cash (and also save up)?

Sorry for all the questions, but I figure this is the best place to get them answered!
If anyone can help me with this, it will be greatly appreciated.

I set up a goal on July 12th that I wanted to be for the month of July. The problem is, even though I have it set for July 1st through the 31st it's only showing workouts listed from July 12th. When I update my workout I always go to step 3 so I know they're all showing, but, like I said, it's not counting any of my rides before the 12th. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I want to see a report of my average speed vs. date of ride. Tracking change in my average speed from my daily commutes. I ride the same route on my commute every day and want to track my changes in average speed vs time (date of ride). I am also looking at how long that ride is taking vs. date of ride to see if my time traveled is changing. Currently I have to export the data from iMapMyRide in csv format and cleanup the data to get it into a format to work with spreadsheet and then plot it. Tedious to say the least. Would be nice to have iMapMyRide do it for me.

Having a tough time just getting motivated to get out and ride.Seems like its easier to ride to and from work rather than just jumping on my bike and ride on a none work day.

So i've got the iMapMyRide app on my iPhone. And it's worked "ok" But how do you see your average MPH when you log onto MapMyRide? I see it when i finish my ride, but that's the only time I see it. Is it even viewable after I save it?

Yes, that was my first thought when I saw that there will come new features. But to my unpleasant surprise I saw that one of the "new features" was that I am able to view my trainings for only one month.....

So that will mean that all my precious time recording all my trainings will be thrown away after a month....

I am really surprised by this, this will essentially mean that mapmyride will become useless for me.

And I know that the alternative is paying for a site, but there are good alternatives around the web, although I like(d) mapmyride most...

More people unpleasently surprised by this???
