Last night I completed my trek across the country. I started last February on my virtual tour in Atlantic City, NJ and last night made it to the USA/Mexico border just at San Diego. I actually crossed the border (I was there, why not?) and am headed to Imperial Beach to dip my tire in the Pacific (virtually speaking of course).

I am going to head north up the coast of California to Washington and possibly into Canada and then head back East to AC.

Just wanted to share...

Awesome achievement! It really is a cool thing to look at that map and see all of your hard work represented in one whopper of a map! You need to get a jersey: "Coast to Coast Virtually in my Mind." Or something like that.

Way to crush it. That's awesome to complete such a ride. Way to go! You definately deserve it :)

Dan's comment about the "Coast to Coast Virtually" reminds me of the challenge coming out next week from one Fat Cyclist at FatCyclist.com.

He's hosting a 100mi of Nowhere contest, encouraging everyone to go 100mi either on their rollers or their trainer just because. He's putting together official registration, shirts, swag, and certificates of participation. I'm thinking of signing up just to see how far I can go!

Congratulations !!! Ehirning upon reaching the West Coast.

I too am doing a transcontinental virtual trip across the United States. This 4,063 mile virtual trip starts in Yorktown, Virginia and ends in Florence, Oregon. I started in September 2007, and I'm now just outside Yellowstone National Park. The net thing about this virtual trip is that they took a picture every 2 tenths of a mile, so you can actually see the country as you travel through it. Dan, that's 100mi straight. Last year, he got off the bike every 25-30mi for food/drinks, but still did the 100mi.

All on rollers. Because of a dare. Crazy guy!

I might consider 100 mi. on a spinner or rollers only if I was with a group. Otherwise, I just don't see the point of 100 miles indoors with no scenery. Like mom told me, "if someone on the internet dared you to jump off a bridge, would you do it?"

The St. Louis area has a series of group rides called the Five Star Century rides which consist of six 100-mile rides over the summer. The challenge is to ride five of them (so there's a make-up ride for anyone who goes on summer vacation, which is very nice of them). I hope to do as many of these as I can this year.

My first big ride of the season is the Tour de Stooges metric century over in Illinois. I've done it for the last three years, and last year's ride was in sustained 35 mph winds. The first 50 miles was brutal - seemed to be into the wind the whole way - but the last 15 were, pardon the pun, a breeze!
