I haven't been camping for a few years now and want to get back into it. I find that I need a new stove. I had been using a Coleman Peak 1 backpacking stove.
I am considering the Trangia alcohol stove. Does anyone have experience with that? What do you think about propane vs. white gasoline? I've always thought of propane as being rather wasteful because the bottles are disposable, but the stoves are cheap, they burn hot and are easy to light and regulate, from what I've been told.
I'm a big fan of the MSR WhisperLite Stove. It folds up nicely into a small sack that came with it and doesn't take up much run in your pack. It burns white gas which I think is much more "friendly" than propane for many reasons. I've used my stove in many environments (hills, mountains, desert, forest, etc.) and it's performed superbly in all of them. Easy to light and it boils water fast.
I've never used the Trangia alcohol stove so I'm useless to you on that question. But I say go white gas and you'll be happier than with propane. Most white gas stoves (WhisperLite being a good example) can burn "other" fuels if need be in a pinch. That's easier to find than a new propane tank. Thus endeth my 2 cents. Enjoy your camping!
Paul, The Trianga alcohol stove will serve you well. It is all you will ever need. You can also make one of these called a "Pepsi Can Stove" for less than $3.00. Instructions are on many web sites. I have a whisperlite stove but it is much heavier. It's only advantage is that it puts out much more heat. With one pot meals and using the aluminum wind shield from the wisperlite I find I take the alcohol stove on many more trips.
I used a Trangia alcohol stove about ten years ago on 1 to 2 night backpacking trips. Maybe they have improved them since.
Pro: light, cheap, clean fuel
Con: very weak, leaky, hard to control, can't see flame, hard to turn off, not fuel efficient
I don't use it for bike tours - I use a whisperlite (international). I'd take a wood burner over the Trangia. The "home made" pop can stoves are probably better.
