I felt like that in the beginning, for about the first 2 weeks or so, and then I started really feeling like I had more energy. I do find that my requirement for sleep increases with hard exercising.
Before I started exercising, I could get by with sub-optimal sleep during the night, but especially with intense efforts or racing, I seem to really need good rest. I do sleep much better now, fall asleep faster, feel more rested, and wake up easier in the morning, that's been one of the best benefits of exercising for me.

LIES :)
I second what mbeels says. Your body will require more rest, and because it is tired, you will often fall asleep faster and in my case as well sleep better while waking more refreshed.
As for the energy, for me, I find that things don't tire me out as much as they once did. And yes, I do have more energy, but that might be because I am sleeping better. HOWEVER, it took me considerably longer than 2 weeks to realize a difference...I think I really noticed it after 4 to 6 months. But that may be because I was so bad off in the beginning.
My advice...make sure you REST!
I agree that the workout creates a better nights rest. The length of time to render the positive impact of energy has many variables.
1. Beginning fitness level
2. Type and intensity of excercise.
3. Diet supporting recovery.
4. Length of sleep.
Divide these variables and the difference in the positive impact shows in all of your varied results and opinions. I have had positive sleep, weight management and energy results. My results took some time, most noticeably when the weather and daylight allowed my riding schedule to extend, I had some baseline built in the colder months, then my gains came faster. I currently rider about 150 miles a week, but waning daylight is making that tougher.
Divide these variables and the difference in the positive impact shows in all of your varied results and opinions.Could you express that as a formula please?
Maybe you are not doin it the right way.
