Evening All,
Roy from Portland, OR. 40, married with a 2 year old. I've been a 'runner' for about 4 years. Started because I needed to exercise to keep my diabetes in check and found out that I really like to run. So far, I've run 3 marathons, a half and miscellaneous relays, du's, 12k's and 5k's. Still trying to qualify for Boston, just so I can say I did it.
If you have never tried relays, get 12 people together and visit Oregon
for the annual Hood To Coast Relay .... 24 hours, no sleep, cramped
vans, porta potties, stinky runners galore equal 197 miles of fun
Hey there fellow runners,
I'm Mike from Concord, CA, married with a 7 year old son, working in San Francisco. About 3 years ago I was diagnosed with a degenerative disc just above my tailbone(between L5 and S1). I decided to get into better shape and was able to start running a year later. I've run a couple of 5k's since then and will run the Chinese New Year 5k(SF) in a week and a half from now. Also, I've signed up to do the Wildflower sprint triathlon in May(San Luis Obispo).
Best of luck to all of you in attaining whatever goals that you set out to achieve!
Hello running friends
My name is Ashley, I'm 57 years old from the cold, wet north of England. I am married to Kathryn and we have four grown up children and two grandchildren. I am a psychotherapist.
10 years ago I had an accident at work and seriously injured my back so I have had little physical exercise since then. Recently my treatment changed and I was able to start walking then jogging and now I'm running/ fast walking for 3 miles. I'm working hard to shed 2 stones (28lb) in weight and have entered a 10k in May. Suffering from shin splints at the moment but I hope that my weight loss and continuing fitness will ease this.
Good luck to everyone here
Hey Everyone,
My name is Jim, I'm currently 18 yrs old, I will be 19 on Feb 21st. I'm a senior in High school. I've ran cross country for two years, Jr and Sr. I wish I started running sooner, when I first started I didn't even think I could run a single mile without stopping. I'm going to be doing track this spring for the first time. I've been running on my own and twice a week with the team at conditions. I'll be attending college this fall and my goal is to get fast enough to run on their cross country team next year. My fastest 5k is 20:41, which is from the start of xc last year. I'm sure I can beat that time but not sure by how much. I want to be able to run a 5 mi. under 30 mins. I don't have any injuries at the moment, at least I hope I don't.
Lets get out there and have a great time running!
I'm Kate.
I live in Somerset, England.
I have 3 children and I work 30 hours a week so I don't have time for anything else much, but I do feel the need to keep fit ! After many years or step classes, aerobics, circuit training and gym membership, I finally realised that what I loved was running. Last year I was plagued with minor injuries - calf tears, torn ankle ligaments, achilles pain etc. But since about August last year I've been clear of problems. I run 3 times a week - 4-5 miles in the evening and up to 6 miles on Sunday morning. I love it. It has given me so much - a sense of acheivement, so much enjoyment and a chance to enjoy some beautiful places. And I have lost the sort of weight that it would have taken months of dieting ...and it was much more fun.
Hello,
I am Joe Harnish, 28, from Michigan. I just started running after getting wii fit and not getting a hard enough workout (and having to be inside for it). Started at a half mile and have progressed upwards. I am hoping to loose and keep off 45-50lbs by running.
Hey :)
I'm Ellen. I'm 23 and live in Perth, West Australia, but I work out bush south of Kalgoorlie, and am originally from England. I'm a geologist, currently working at an underground nickel mine (good for filling your lungs up with gunk) but hopefully moving to a job where I see more sunlight in the near future.
I started running about 3 years ago to get fit for a summer mapping expedition into the Alps (climbs between 400m and 900m starting from 2000m, everyday for 2 months). I'd been doing some stuff before, but a friends and I decided to enter a 10k run to spur us on and get the old heart going and the muscles into gear.
Anyway, I survived my trip and have been running on and off ever since, including one half marathon (I vowed to never put myself through that again).
Now I'm in Oz it seems a shame to waste the glorious weather just going to the gym so I've begun again in earnest.
I've entered the City to Surf half marathon come the end of August (yes, I know, but last time was with no real training and I'm actually putting some effort into it this time) so fingers crossed. Aim is to finish it in less pain than last time, and quicker would be nice too!
So yeah, thats me...
Wow there are a ton of poeple in this thread! I thought that I would keep it going and introduce myself too.
My name is Dan. I recently started running again and I'm loving the benefits. So far I've lost 25 lbs of sweat! Sweet! I've been kicking around MMR for awhile now and I think that it is a great website.
I started a group here too. Come on over and check us out.
Hello I'm Danny, I live in Bournemouth England and I've been running regularly for about a year now.
My daughter swims for a local club and has a few very early morning sessions during the week. After dropping her off at the the pool at 5 in the morning I would go home and get an extra couple of hours sleep. I couldn't sleep. So found myself with two hours spare... So I started running. And I now wouldn't be without it. Have gone from being a podgy ex-rugby player to being a slightly less podgy ex-rugby player with very expensive running shoes.
Am training for the Swanage half marathon now.. motivation to train is fear of being beaten in the home straight by some little old lady.
Hello,
I'm Paula. A neighbor told me about this site. I started running the end of March and could only do 'lamp posts' .... run one lamp post, walk 2 lamp posts ..... Now 2 months later I stuck with it and can do 5km. It feels like such a great accomplishment. Who knows, maybe a half marathon next June?
Hi I am a new runner. At 56 I had never run unless trying to get away from some authority figure :)
I am an avid cyclist and rode 4244 miles coast to coast across the US last summer carrying full camping gear. Then a month ago I had a bike/car accident. As would be expected the car won. Due to a wrist injury I still find it painful to ride. So since I wasn't getting in mileage on the bike, when my daughter said "I'm going for a run, want to come along?" I said yes.
I ran .6 miles with her at a slow pace and then waited while she finished her run. She was kind and said what a good run that was for a non runner. I found the ways that my legs and feet moved to be really foreign, but pretty quickly it felt at least somewhat natural.
The next day I went and got fitted for good running shoes. A week later I ran 1.4 miles in 16 minutes and felt like I could have gone much farther, but am holding myself back a bit while my body adjusts to running. I know that isn't terribly far or fast, but I am delighted to be running. It really feels good.
This sport seems to be addictive and I expect to continue running even when I am able to cycle without pain again.

Hi, I'm Alissa, 29 (30 this year, gasp!) and I live in Berkshire in England. I'm American and I live here with my English husband. No kids, no pets, just us at the moment-)
I started running on the treadmill in March last year when I was 'training' for my wedding which was the end of June. I ran through the fall and then quit the gym and kind of went into hibernation through the winter. I have now picked it back up again (on the roads now) over the last 2-3 months and am currently running between 4-7 miles 4-5 days per week. I love it some days and hate it others but I do feel better overall being active. I still have days where I can't run more than 20 minutes without having to stop and other days where I can run 6 miles and not even be tired at the end. I just hope to get to a point soon where all my runs are consistent (and easier) so I can start to speed up. Right now I am at just above 10 minute miles and I want so much to be closer to 9! Even 9:30 would thrill me!
I live by this site to track my mileage and keep a training diary.
Nice to 'meet' everyone,
Alissa
Or if you are ever in the Davis County, Utah area come join the South Davis Road Runners for a run. This is a no-charge group that enjoys the camaraderie of a group run. We usually meet Saturday at 7 a.m. at various locations.
Get excited about health!
Live Healthy,
Lora
New runner here, I'm Emma, 19 from the SW of the UK. Just started running after my boyfriend (who works in a gym) said how he wished I was fitter!
Look forward to progressing and getting to know more of you x
G'day,
My name is Jay i'm 29 and i live in Adelaide, South Australia running here is awesome becuase the weather is always nice i have only been running for about a month and am still building up to 5k, love this site it has been really helpful
Hi,
I'm 31 from Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am a writer, archivist and artists. I've been running my entire life (biking, walking etc.). I ran the 1/2 mile in track in Jr. High, and some on the Long distance team. I didn't continue on with track or long distance, but I did and still do run on my own.
Along with running I also practiced/studied Kendo (Japanese swordsmanship, I have no rank and haven't practiced in a loooong time, but I still love it). I also have a few years of dressage experience too, I really miss riding. Along with running those three sports helped me keep my sanity to grad school.
I came to the site because of the awesome mapping tool, and to learn how to run a 5k/and deal with a chronic ankle tendon injury. It's great to hear so many good stories and support!
I am also asthmatic (with severe allergies), and a type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump.
It's Great to be here! ^_ ^ I hope to make some good friends.
