It's good to be alive! The 4.09 miles this morning went well enough. My legs were a bit tight to start with but by mile 2 they were loose and moving.
LexB: It's great to get into the carefree strides of youth. I love that feeling when it comes. It usually comes along with a nice big childish grin too. You're right on plot. Running keeps you young so have fun!! The one thing that you couldn't do as a child though is reward yourself with a shandy. It's great to be a grown-up too!!
aldiara88 - what's going on. havn't seen you post for a while. hope you are still at it! how is your training going?
I'm sitting here drinking beer and eating potato chips with a clear conscience after shaving 2 minutes of my hilly run (which is about 12.3km). At the moment i am doing it in 1hr and 3mins. I want to get that down to under 1 hr soon - but those hills are steep. it's the down hill that slows me down as much as the up hill actually. I haven't run on any flat ground for a few weeks now, so it's going to be interesting to see if hill work really is "disguised speedwork".
I still haven't gotten back to that stage of running where you feel like you are in control of your body....
LexB: Please. I implore you. Don't give up drinking. You will make me(Australian - also good drinker) look bad, and feel guilty.... :( We can't have that now can we.
nothing to interestig to report just a few speed sessions(200s, 400s and the like) with some easy morning runs and recovery runs sprinkled in between. Finals are here so i've been doing nothing but studying and running. Today's workout, after my last exam, is a 60 min hard run which usually adds up to be a little over 10miles plus a short wu and cd jog.
I just completed the Indianapolis 500 Festival Mini-Marathon (half marathon) with about 35,000 of my closest friends. Great race with wonderful conditions today. Got to see the finish on jumbo-tron at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as I was circling that 2.5 mile oval. I'm not even half-way done and I get to see the two winners battling it out for the last half mile. That's right TWO winners - a tie at 1:02:53. Even after analyzing the video they could not tell a difference. About 51 minutes later I drug myself accross the finish. I'm very pleased with my time of 1:53:52 considering I tore something in my calf exactly 30 days ago and have only put in about 27 miles since.
I've been following this thread for several weeks now and thought I'd join the conversation. Looks like a lot of support for folks. I've been training with a group for the Mini and now that that is over I need some folks to keep me accountable to keep the training going. Good luck to all.
After a frightful, long and very tiring day at work today I finally made it back home at 5.30pm. I was supposed to do a long run yesterday but lack of sleep the night before won out and I just couldn't face it. Which meant that today I had to go on the long-slow run no matter how tired I was. However i thought a long run might help me burn off some negative energy. Did 11k, some beastly hills as usual (any little gems of 'sports psych' / self motivation you guys rely on to get you up those hills?) but had a great run (pretty much spot on 60 mins) and felt much better emotionally and psychologically after!
Running has to keep me going for the next month - due to lack of funds I have had to take a month off kickboxing which is really frustrating as I absolutely love going and was beginning to progress (just got my first stripe at orange belt - three more and I grade for hi-orange) - so this will really be a hurdle to my development. But hey... I'll just really focus on the running and circuit training I guess.
rpetreccajr welcome! The forum is a great motivation - everyone here is really helpful, friendly and supportive. Hearing the hardcore runners talk about their achievements is almost the best motivation ever - the BEST motivation is when they cheer you on! : ) I'm training for my first half marathon in October! What's next on your list?
I had my conference meet today and yesterday, it was really windy both days...go figure, its against to rules to have a good day for me to race
Friday - 10k race. I got 8th with a time of 32:45. I went 16:10/16:35 because of some stomach problems (time to change my diet I guess). I was expecting the race to go out really slow and then negative split, but the leaders went out in 70 for the first 400. The worst part is, my time (even though its way slower than what I was aiming for) would have been anywhere between 3rd and 5th the last four years in the conference 10k. Of course, I get the year where its windy as crap and everyone still runs fast. Oh well, it was a 10k PR and I PRed in the 8k too (sub 26:00 or so - I fell way off the last 1.25 miles)
Saturday - 5k race. The plan here was to help pace a couple of guys to national qualifying marks. I was gonna pull em through 2k at 69 seconds per 400 pace. The windy today was INSANE. I got em through the 1000m mark in 2:55 and we were hauling. My coach told me to let em take over at 1200m, and then they didn't really speed up (they slowed down soon after). The winning times were pretty slow, I wish I would have just backed off and held on rather than dropping (even though I was instructed to drop out)
This (probably) ends my collegiate track career.
I ran nothing today. 0 miles!
It took me no time at all, fastest I have ever done it!
(I am having a few days off to recover from my April training program, kick back and relax, ahhhhh...... nice.... off to sit in the garden....)
This week was just a 19 mile total week for me (my low milage week). I only ran about 10 miles total, but biked about 5miles every day at a 15 to 16 mile an hour.
Is it bad that today was to be my easy recovery 5 mile run and I ran it at an 8:30 pace? One of the fastest runs I done yet. I felt really great and I think with the weather getting better and I'm out on my road bike; the cross training is really paying off.
LEXB - "as for self motivation to get up those hills" it's all mind over matter. If you don't mind; it won't matter.
I'm a rock climber as well and when I'm running hills, there are a few here in Vermont, I think of the age old question of "Why do rock climbers climb mountains?"; because they're there. I also find that lowering myself, leaning into the hill, slowing the pace a bit, really gets me into a rhythm and before I know it; I'm cresting the hill and going down the back side. The hardest hill I've run was in the Maple Leaf 1/2 marathon last Sept. '07. The Hill as right at mile 10 and felt like I hit a brick wall. Sometimes it's ok to walk.
rpetreccajr - Welcome and here's a web site that I use for half marathon's in my area. It contains half marathons across the US, just scroll down and find your state or your local states and the races are linked ( http://www.halfmarathons.net/ )
Be well all, 3 weeks till Burlington City Marathon
I was feeling fat and sassy this morning so I decided on exploring a new route and just running on my long run. Turned out to only be 7 miles but I had fun and found some nice new spot to run to. (Some of the run wasnt even on the map.) Today time didn't matter to me, distance didn't matter. I was alive and that mattered!
rpetreccajr : Welcome! Did you see yourself on the jumbo-tron? That is a pretty good reason to get out there on race day. Our local Gate River Run finishes in the Altell Stadium where the Jaguars play. Jumbo-tron here I come!
Godspeed everyone. May he grant you all new PR's this month!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had my 10k today, and i am very happy with my results. I finished in 46.55 a personal best. Glad to have it done and out of the way, thoug i do wish that i could have had more time with the new shoes to break them in. I ended up with one small bister that may hold me back for an extra day, I will have to see.
Lexb dont worry i have gotten lost on a run before as well. I got mixed up in subuerbia with lots of dead end streets and cressents, it took me over 2 hours to find my way home. what a nightmare.
Everyone great work, glad to be able to share in your successes
Another slow and easy day today. Just over half an hour of 180s run / 30s walk. Getting better.
LexB. My motivation for getting up hills is, "this will make me stronger". Sometimes it even helps!
Bendy, nice run!
I've got to brag on a friend a little bit again. This time about the great Sally Kipyego. She shattered her own collegiate record in the 10k yesterday at Stanford by 30 sec and got the Olympic A standard time by 20 sec! She ran 31:25! Her plan was to get the A standard here and then run the Olympic trials in Kenya this summer. She has an outside chance of making the team but she is only 21 and up against a ton of great runners.
On another note, we have a small tune up meet thursday for the conference champs. the next weekend. My coach mentioned doing a 4x400m with the distance guys! haha i haven't done one of those in years. I told him i would only do it if he got me a speedsuit ;) haha. I dont know if it will actually happen but it would be fun and a good workout.
Been gone a while this last week. Sounds like everyone is doing pretty well. KDogg, Is this the weekend you were in MI? I can vouch for that damn wind!! I did a 5k run along the shores of Lake Michigan and thought I was going to go for a swim a few times! Any plans for your running now that your collegiate career is (probably) over?
LexB, my solution for running hills is to live in mid-Michigan. It's about as flat as a tabletop. If I want to run hills, I have to either a)get on a treadmill (boring!!!) or b)run up the sides of a freeway overpass (YIKES!!)
As for my running, I ran about 12.25 miles on Wednesday (2:06), a personal best distance. Then on Friday, I had to drive about 5 hours to Chicago for the Chicago Police Department Run 2 Remember (They were honoring my co-worker that passed away during last year's marathon). Before I left, I did a short 2 mile shakeout run, just to loosen up a little. Saturday morning, it was clear, but WINDY! The rain stayed away long enough for us to get our run in. I went out waayyy too fast, then died at the top of a small rise. I struggled through the last half with leaden legs, and finished in a disappointing (even for me) 25:28. At any rate, I wasn't looking to set any PR's, otherwise I would not have stayed out till after midnight drinking beer with one of the race organizers!! I had a great time, and it was a wonderful gift for the Chicago Police Department to honor Chad the way they did.
10x300m this afternoon, pretty nice weather but for some reason my legs felt dead. Ran most in 44 with a couple 43's.
I am for sure running that 4x400 plus an 800 haha, my first time race to both since high school. It's just for a workout so it should be fun running something different with no pressure.
hey dan, it wasn't this weekend, but last weekend that I was up in the area. It was extremely hot and windy, which is odd, because Hillsdale almost ALWAYS has great conditions for racing. This past weekend I ran the 10k described above.
I found out today I get one last chance to race as a collegian. I get to run the 5k at the North Central College invite on Thursday evening. The field is traditionally stacked and the conditions are supposed to be perfect for a fast race. One more crack at 14:59...
As for post-collegiate running, my only plan as of now is to take a week off and then start building mileage again. I'd like to average 100+ miles per week over the summer (Lydiard style) and then try some longer races in the fall. But first things first, this weekend
KDogg, good luck for that last crack...
I ran another slowish half hour this morning. Lasted 1 mile per time before walking so I'm hoping this is a good sign. May have to forgo the Melbourne Marathon in October now though as I've lost most of a month in training and I'm going to be extra careful building back up again. Will definitely do the half though if the full one is out.
Well done Dan. I am sure Chad would be proud of the work you are doing. And late night carb loading is always good preparation.
Ex-kiwi - you are going to have to wait at the finish line for me. Running into the MCG was one of the great experiences of my life last year - looking forward again to it this year. Check out www.mcg.org.au for those who dont know of this wonderful stadium
LexB - learn to love hills. Attack them, better to walk down the other side. They will become easier.
Today we had a regular warm up, the 4x1km - may have been a bit under. Did them in 3.36, 3.35, 3.40, 3.35 with 1 minute rest. May do a longer run Thursday.
Alright! I had a really good run this morning. When I woke up my eyelids felt like cinderblocks and I just wanted to go back to sleep. Once the shoes were laced up and my buddy was out on the front porch waiting there was no turning back. I did a 5.44 mile loop in 55.45. The last two miles were especially good. Mile 4 was at 7:33 which decimated my previous PR of 9:10. Although I must say that it was a bit of a cheat since part of that mile was the downhill portion of the Main St. bridge. (Is a mile a mile?) So I will call mile 5 a little more realistic PR of 8:44 which was all flat and no wind. My first sub 9 mile in recent history. Sweet!
KDogg : Best of wishes on the 5K. Just remember, " It's supposed to hurt like hell."
aldiara88 : Welcome back. It's nice to meet you. Are you still planning on doing the 1/2 Marathon or is that old news?
gfinkelde: Thanks for the link. I took the virtual tour of the stadium. It looks really nice. Huge field! Did you run across the field?_______________________________________________________________________
Hello guys,
I was supposed to run yesterday however I came down with a horrible fever and as soon as I got home went to bed. Today I feel better so far but will take it easy, if I feel better tonight do you think I'd be okay to run (was supposed to do weights today too)? I remember being told that fevers and sickness put your body under too much stress and you shouldn't exercise.
I did post a question in the fitness forum but no answers and I really want to make sure I won't do anything very stupid. I know it's annoying when people post questions in this topic but I also know someone checks this out all the time and you guys really know your stuff! I hope you don't mind!
Cheers
Lex
Well just got back from a 6.78 km run that took a slow 34min, still a little sore from Sunday's 10k. At mile marker 20 for the month of the 100+ that is my goal. This may be intersting.
Hey Lex i saw you message in the fitness forum but i dont know enough to give you an education answer. But my advise would be wait till you feel better before pushing too much. that would be the best way to avoid any injury from lack of energy due to sickness. This will also let you body spend the energy on getting better rather then running. Probably helping your recovery time!
But like i said I really dont know much about this.
Floridan - yeah huge field, seats 100,000. they play cricket and Australian Footy there, and had the athletics there for the 56 Olympics and the recent commonwealth games. For a useless bit of trivia it once held - may still do - the world record crowd for baseball, as they played an exhibition game before the soccer final at the 56 games.
We ran around the outside through a narrow chute with a huge crowd, then ran about 350m on the ground, a huge buzz.I have managed to snare a cricket game there as well, but it was a real buzz to run onto it.
LexB - 2 schools of thought. It is either your body saying rest, so therefore you should rest. Or if you can feel motivated enough to run, then it is a good way of flushing out the crap in your body. I fall into the latter category, but if I am crook it does effect my motivation, then I dont run anyway.
Kdogg - I am hanging out to hear of your 14.57 - you can skip right past 14.58 and 59. Good luck
LexB; no doubt this is too late to do any good as I see you posted 18hrs ago. Like LiquidPig, I'm no expert, but after a bad night the most sensible thingto do is to take it easy the following day. You won't lose any condition from taking a day off but you could avoid something worse. Hope you're feeling better by the time you get back to this thread.
Another 5k this morning, again very slow and easy, but with only a couple of short walks today. Back to the physio tomorrow and then who knows?
Nothing too special today. 4 miles in 40:46. I did manage another sub 9 mile at 8:49. Another recovery run gone astray.
G'day all.
Good EZ 4.1 in 50 min.
Lost 3 to 4 lbs. sweat. Explains slight vertigo while stretching...thought my sinus was about to act up...but it didn't. I feel dumb not figuring it out sooner. Looks like I need to start carrying water on EZ.Thanks for the input guys. All the information I managed to dig up suggested above the neck (ie head cold) and you're good to go - below the neck (Inc. fevers) rest up. Altho I am not in the 'at risk' group for heart issues which seem to be the major worry, I am going to err on the side of caution as it was fever, body aches and nausea and take a couple of rest days. I have a big weekend in Seattle this weekend so I want to be fit for that, not sending myself back down the spiral! : ) Feeling much better - maybe I'll go for a run tonight, or maybe just leave it and go tomorrow.
Thanks for theguys
Lex
aldiara88, Are you from Chicago? I was just there this weekend for a 5k, my first time there, and I gotta say, what an amazing city!!! Everyone told me people from Chicago were grumpy and rude. I experienced exactly the opposite. Everyone I met was super friendly! I can't wait to go back for the marathon, I made some new friends I definitely plan on keeping in touch with.
As for my running, I did a 14 miler today. I planned on running it earlier in the week, but was suffering from a bout of shin pain. Felt good throughout the run, until about the 11-12 mile mark. My wife stashed some water for me at the 13 mile mark, but I ran out at about the 10 mile mark, so I died off a lot between 11 and 12. Finished in 2:22:35, so still about a 10:10 pace. Rest tomorrow, then an easy run Friday and a tempo run on Saturday.
By the way, anyone try the Margarita flavored Shot Bloks? The only thing missing is a little Patron in my water bottle!!! Keep running.
Went for what started like a slower run, but then the pace just picked up and I was able to hang on. Turned out to be as quick as last week when we were flying. 12km in 55min. The ride home was a bit more sedate but it is amazing how much you improve your riding in a short amount of time. I was only a minute slower than my fastest after running for nearly an hour.
Probably a couple of runs on the weekend - 1 of an hour, 1 of 90 mins. Have a great weekend guys.
Hi All,
It's been a while since I have posted because I hurt my IT band and had to take it easy. Got some good advice on recovering from a physiotherapist that I talked to and managed to do some slow jogs/runs by myself and with other people. Today was the first time I actually ran at a pace that I felt pushed and the IT band felt fine. The 2 Advil I took before the run might have helped but I know it felt better than earlier in the week. Managed to do about 4.26 miles in about 35 minutes which, for now, I am pleased with, especially since I ran half of it at someone else's pace.
KDogg: enjoy that last race, and being that it is the last one you'll do as a college athlete just make sure that when you walk away from the race that you know you did your best... basically, leave nothing on the table for this one. Good luck with it.
nice day after a couple rainy ones. had a good hard run, got my 3.6 in under 34 minutes. getting ready for 10k next weekend.
Friday: Ran 5.44 miles in something like 57:00. The legs were a bit tight.
Saturday: 2 Miles 2:00/1:00 intrevals.
It is crazy how long one minute feels when you are running fast and how fast when running slow.
