http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=386444 a user indicated that their software, which is built on the Google Maps API, can adds roads, custom waypoints and other features to the Garmin 205/305 map display. This is an enhancement to the current display which only provides a "breadcrumb" trail. Maybe something to consider?

I couldn't get the link to work, but I'll bet that this is similar to www.bikeroutetoaster.com.

I'm not sure what he's doing to enhance the maps, but your Garmin Edge/Forerunner can give you navigation cues via the Course Points functionality.  As far as I can tell Course Points is just another Tag type in the xml output of the Garmin Course file.

Anyway, the usual method is to output the Garmin Course from MMR and then add the course points in Garmin Training Center.  You can give these markings such as left, right, straight, etc, and the Edge will give you the distance to crs and beep at you when you pass the course point.

The bikeroutetoaster extracts the cues, lets you edit them online, then they come into the device as a course point.  You can check out what the course points look like in xml by downloading the route as a tcx and opening the file in a text editor.

I've been using Bikeroutetoaster for any course that I don't have memorized.  It saves a few trees and it's nice to have the Nav in the device.  The only caveat is that course points tend to take up a lot of memory on the device vs. the breadcrumbs without the course points.

Here's an example route.  Check out the cues page and go ahead and download the tcx to see the format.

I would really like to see mapmyride do this, and I am hoping it will be incorporated with the new mapper, since the new mapper does create a turn-by-turn cue sheet automatically.

One thing bikeroutetoaster does that is very clever is that it can automatically create warning waypoints at an arbitrary distance prior to the turn (200m, for example).  These warning waypoints make the Garmin 305 bleep and notify you of the turn before you get to it.  Unfortunately, BRT has not implemented this feature correctly -- the locations of the BRT warning points are incorrect, and they can really mess up the ride route, at least in the test of this feature that I did.

I would really love to see mapmyride add automatic waypoints like bikeroutetoaster.  A further addition would be the option to automatically name the waypoint with the name of the street to be turned onto, rather than just naming it "Turn Right" or "Turn Left".
