Thanks! I appreciate the feedback.
Yeah, you definitely have to test each one before you find the one you like. I prefer the GU. I have been using it for a couple of years. I have also tried the bloks, the sport beans, etc. The thing I don't like about the blocks is the texture. They also get very sticky when they warm up.
Good luck. Experiment to find what works and stick with it.
Of course, it is a matter of personal taste - pun intended. I run a lot of 1/2 marathons and I find that using the gel packets is much easier than using the bloks or hard candies, although I have never experienced any stomach problems with any of them.
But taste and texture should be considered - you really need to try them all in your training runs. Some of the gels are smooth like honey - this is what I prefer (try Power Bar gels). On the other hand, Accelerade gel has a milky taste but is a bit gritty. Also, try different flavors and brands - some are really good tasting, and some are like chewing vitamins.
My problem with using bloks and hard candies is that you can easily choke if you try to eat and run at same time. But if you prefer the candies, try simple gummy bears - they are soft, easy to chew and swallow, and Cheap. They don't, however, have sodium and potassium but you can get that from your Gatorade drink. Stay fueled ... Stay strong.
In my opinion, Shot Bloks are the greatest things ever. I don't mind the gels... but, Shot Bloks taste better, are easier to eat while breathing heavy, don't sit as heavy in my stomach, and give a real bang in energy.
