In this Virtual Tour Group it's important to recognize our real acheivements too so I've started this thread so that we could all have a common place to come and "toot our horns." Whether it is a 5k or an Ironman. Share it here. You never know it could end up in your next signature.

This idea was spawned from Jairadballerinas thread about the Hatfield and McCoy Marathon. So thanks for the idea JB!

I'm running in a 5K this weekend called Run for the Pies. I've been training really hard to get a pie when I finish but I don't think that I will get the sub-20 minute requirement this year. I'm shooting for 25 or 26 minutes.

I guess that I did something wrong. I either went out too fast or ran too hard the day before or... My finish time was 27:55. A PR for me. My last 5K was 35:45 so I am happy about that. I just expected to come in a bit closer to 27. I had fun though. One of my buddies who didn't even train passed me towards the end of the race. At first I was cool with that but when I saw the finish mat up ahead I said to myself, "No way." It took me a bit of energy just to catch him. When he saw that I had caught up he picked up the pace. I out kicked him BAD. Just thinking about that makes me smile. It was a fun race and Im glad my buddy passed me because I probably would have just coasted in otherwise.

Even though you didn't break 20mins, still sounds like you had a good time. I know I surely wouldn't be complaining about the 27mins on the 5k either. To me, that's smoking - or I'm just slow :)

The best part is that you got out and ran it! I'm hoping to get back into things when this stress fracture finally heals. The PT docs have me limited to 30mins 2x per day for a while.

Good job though.

Great job pouring it on to beat your friend. Time goals are great but nothing beats the feeling of good ole human competition and reaching down just a little deeper than the guy next to you and pulling out the extra needed to pull ahead of them.

I'm starting to train for the "Gate River Run" in March. It's one of the biggest 15K's in the country. It will be my first time doing this distance in a race. I would really like to do a marathon this coming summer too. I'll keep you posted.

Gate River Run is this weekend. I had intentions of being in much better condition by now but alas I have been a tad lazy. Last Monday I put in a nice long run of 7 miles. Everything felt great and the gears were clicking in perfect time. It felt great despite my lack of training. Tonight I went out on the same run and suffered. Weird that way, I think that a couple things contributed to my sucky run tonight.

The obvious lack of training.

It was warmer than last Monday.

Dehydration. I was 2 1/2 miles into the run and I had really bad cotton mouth. I drank very little if any water today.

Finally. I've been lazy and am under trained with an extremely low base mileage.

Thanks for listening. When I put it out there like that it all becomes very real for me and helps me stay committed to my routine. Yes I will do the 15K even though my wife may have to carry me. That thought alone will keep me in the race.

Future Plans

First 1/2 Marathon

First Marathon

Go to the Top of Half Dome in Yosemite - August

First 15K under the belt!

My time 1h:48min. That's the unofficial time. The official time will include my pee break. It was a good run. (Much better than I had anticipated.) It was a blast. Let's just say I'm glad that it wasn't longer. I will get there.

It's ridiculous to think that some of the elites run it under 30min!!

Thanks guys! I feels great to have accomplished something like this I can only image how thrilling it will be to finish a marathon.

Edit:

I think that I have decided on doing the:

Outback Steakhouse Distance Classic 1/2 Marathon on 11/26/2009

and then

26.2 with Donna on 2/21/2010

That should give me plenty of time to train. I will follow Hal Higdon's Training Program for the 1/2 Marathon. I'm still looking for a training program for the marathon Hal Higdon has one for the marathon too. Any suggestions?

Congratulations on a great run.

I did 26.2 with Donna 2 years ago and I hope they bumped the start time up. They started us at 9AM because a portion of the run was on a beach and they wanted to catch the proper tide. However that left most of the runners still out on the course @ noon and it was about 83 degrees that day and add on that the last 3 miles were on a freeway with no shade made it brutal. Great cause and definitely had a lot of support throughout the entire race. Lots of spectators (except for the freeway).

As for training for a marathon. I started with and still do FIRST. They have a half program too but I haven't tried it.

I used JB's recommendation of the FIRST for my last 10k. I thought it was great! I may look into Hal's program to compare the too though. The FIRST book (Run Faster, Run Less) was great by the way!

My wife has decided she wants to do the Air Force Half Marathon in Ohio in September. Her family is Air Force, mine is Army, so we have some ties, and it'll be fun. Apparently the base (her family is stationed at) takes a C-130 w/ the participants to the race and brings them home. That in itself is worth me running 13.1!

So, now that I'm cleared to run again (thanks to PT) I have signed up and been training for the http://www.rumpshaker5k.com/ in under 2wks. Should be easy, and based on my latest runs, I just may be able to set a PR. We'll see.

I've just about convinced myself to gun for the PR...
