What I want to do is figure out how to enable turn by turn capability on my new Garmin 705, and do things like load course maps with directional instructions. But there is no user manual!
Question: do I buy the City Navigator for North America, on a preloaded data card, or do buy the version on the DVD-ROM and somehow load that data onto a blank microSD datacard?
Next question: how do I import CRS files from something like MapMyRide.com into my Edge? Does that go onto a bank microSD card as well? Along with the City Nav data?
Third question: how do I get my cadence unit talking to the 705? The cadence thing is from my Edge 305.
You can download a pdf version of the user manual at garmin.com.
Buy the city navigator for North american on the preloaded data card.
To import a crs file from mapmyride, save it to the desktop, then import it to your Garmin Training Center program. From there you can upload it to the 705. The file does not go on the SD card. It is stored in the 705's memory. Once it's on the 705, you can get turn by turn directions but I just follow the route map on the gps.
I'm not sure if the cadnece unit from the 305 will work with the 705. Check the manual.
Hope this helps. I've had a 705 for a couple of months now and it is fantastic. Well worth the price. You should spend some time reading the manual. The 705 has so many features and you can customize it to best suit your needs so take the time to become familiar with all it's features.
Thank you for this message. I was getting very frustrated. Don't forget that you need to download the software from Garmin for the unit to work with your computer.
I just started using my iPhone 3G and Distance (an iPhone app) to log my activity into MapMyRide.com with great success! It worked so well that I can't wait to get back out there again. It obviously isn't a turn-by-turn GPS, but if you are just looking to log your rides, then it is hard to beat this solution. I have always been skeptical of all-in-one devices, but having my phone, ipod, and now fitness tracker/GPS all in one package is turning out to be amazing!
The only bug I found was that Distance logged my ride as a run, but that could have been operator error and was easily fixed online.
305 cadence sensor does work with 705. You must pair it. Turn on and hit "menu" then scroll down to "settings" then scroll down to "ANT+Sport" click on "Accessories" and you will see the "cadence sensor present?" say "yes" and "restart scan" for sensor.
I just got a 705 and tried to import today's ride to mapmyride. As soon as I select import from Garmin device, I get a windows explorer error. Is there a bug w/ the 705 import to mapmyride?
