    Hi

I have been running  pretty long distances all summer with an ipod and i was been doing  good. Now the new school year has started and in cross country we can not run with an ipod and so far i am having a wicked tough time with it. is there any tips or suggestions to help me not focus on my breathing or my body  but more on my speed and my time. thank you =]

"wicked", you must be from New England... :)  I grew up there....

I had to give up the headphones a long time ago.  I was training for my first marathon and noticed how tight my quads were getting.

Strangely, this was because I couldn't hear myself running.  I am one of those uncoordinated guys that can't walk and chew gum at the same time...

Once I started running without the head phones, I started listening to my feet land, breathing and almost immediately discovered that the reason why I had tight quads was because I was dragging my feet.

Now, when ever I go more than a few miles it sans the headset.  I use it as a mental thinking time instead.

    Good luck in cross country.

PS- one time on a 20 mile run I had a friend follow me with her bike blasting music with speakers mounted her handle bars.  But I doubt cross country will allow that....
