Full Description

The Giro was inspired by the Tour de France and, just as the French race was intended to boost circulation of L'Auto, so Emilio Camillo Costamagna, the editor of La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper, aimed to increase his circulation. The first Giro d'Italia started on May 13, 1909 at Milan with eight stages totalling 2,448 kilometers (1,521 miles). Luigi Ganna was the first winner. The Giro d'Italia is one of the three Grand Tours ( Giro, Tour De France, and Vuelta a España) as well as the Triple Crown of Cycling ( Giro, Tour de France, and the World Cycling Championship).

Having moved to Tuscany Italy a year and a half ago, I can say the Giro is the highlight of my stay so far. I was lucky enough to watch Stages 9 and 10 and 13 in person. I live in Pisa and they rode on some of my routes on their way to Firenza. Extremely exciting to talk with them. Ciao!

Giro d'Italia is one of the best! Nothing quite like the classic scenery of Italy, with all of the great cycling history. Italians do love thier road cycling and I will be watching as much as I can. A perfect primer for the TdF! Go Garmin-Slipstream!!
